Yeah, I guess socialism is the answer. Sorry, but all three of my eyes are 20/20. But Third Eye Blind is a great band, though!

as i said, the 60s were before your time. people got their heads bashed then too. martin luther king got shot. for being an "america hater".

the parallels disregard people's ideas. that is the whole point. just because you don't like someone's ideas you go to "america hater", and think it's okay for SEATED SILENT people to get pepper spray in the face. cool, man.

what it has to do with socialism, erm, i don't know!

Watch some of the police shows on tv. If you don't comply when the police arrest you, you can be pepper sprayed. It isn't pleasant, but it doesn't cause permanent damage. I'm not going to comment further on your insults to the civil rights movement.

television is a great place to learn police procedure! Excellent idea.

If it's on camera, you can bet it's not violative of a person's rights (generally). So, what I'm trying to convey is that pepper spray is totally acceptable if people ignore a lawful order or resist arrest. If they used batons, then that could be excessive force (depending upon what type of resistance), but not pepper spray. Pepper spray is also harmless. Some departments even spray and tazer their new officers so they will know what it feels like.

Harmless? The police can use it on passive, unarmed resisters? Randall, with all due respect, you might consider investing a little time researching pepper spray before gracing us with such nonsense.

I wouldn't describe temporary blindness, breathing difficulties and chemical burns as "harmless"

Should be good times in Charlotte next year http://www.wcnc.com/news/health/Charlotte-rules-limit-use-of-pepper-spray-134491268.ht ml

Police in New York, Denver, Seattle and Portland, Ore., have been widely criticized for trying to control Occupy crowds by using the spray, which gets its power from an inflammatory agent found naturally in cayenne and many other kinds of pepper.

But the incident that caused the most outrage - and disciplinary action against the officers involved - happened Nov. 18 on the campus of the University of California-Davis. As captured on video now watched by millions on the Internet, campus police Lt. John Pike doused a group of Occupy protesters - all of them seated, with arms linked - with a bright orange pepper spray compound.

In Charlotte, City Council member Patrick Cannon, who chairs the council's Public Safety Committee, said he had two reactions when he saw the video: Disbelief at what he was watching, and relief that, if the rules are followed, it won't happen in Charlotte.

"Our policy is written as such that we do not deploy (pepper spray) on passive demonstrators," said Cannon, a Democrat.

But what does "passive" mean?

CMPD Capt. Jeff Estes said the directives would also prohibit spraying demonstrators even if they refused, nonviolently, to follow orders to disperse.

Their refusal would have to include "violence or riotous behavior," Estes said. Anything short of that "would be a trespassing issue" that would not call for using pepper spray, he said.

now apparently there is a new weapon for the "riot squad" to try out. sound waves that interfere with the respiratory system - to the point of suffocation if taken that far - can be aimed at crowds who will not disperse! charming, eh? what next?

i suppose asphyxiation is harmless too, though it is a matter of DEGREE as in most cases. to pepper spray a seated, docile protester - who actually pays for the right to be on a campus as in DAVIS - point blank, is overkill. as has been admitted by the head of UCDAVIS by the way.

It's harmless, i.e. does no permanent harm. And if they obey lawful orders given by the police, they wouldn't have to face such.

Nah, not at all. The active ingredient in pepper spray is the same that many put in their food. It serves a purpose, which is why all law-enforcement groups use it.

the pepper in pepper spray is not the same strength as the cayenne in your spice rack. MUCH stronger. the man who invented it is horrified that it is being used on these basically harmless folk. annoying, yes; violent and dangerous? lol.

Waterboarding? Are you nuts, woman?? I'm drinking a tall cool glass of Fiji water at this very moment. Perfectly harmless, I tell you!
