The point, AQ, is that some of us Americans value our basic rights, one of which is Freedom of Speech. While people are distracted with other things, the government is slowly taking away this freedom and working on others, such as the Freedom to bear Arms.------------------

The other thing is the slippery slope of "hate crimes"Murder should be murder. The stats of the person one murders should not enter. A crime should be a crime. The action is the issue, not the bias, because then we are entering the slippery slope of mind reading. This is another issue, though. ------------------

The gay people in your OP are exercising their free speech. Their asking is not the same as doing something. Balancing one person's rights against another's is tricky, yes. The military church men have a right to say what they think about gay marriage, BUT they are govt employees obliged to follow the law also. Personally I wouldnt want a hater marrying me and I think it's dubious that anyone's religion is threatened by gays marrying, anymore than interracial marriage is the pastor's business to recognize or not no matter what his "religious" conscience tells him.So WHERE in the BIBLE does it actually discuss homosexuals at all? And does religious freedom extend to the shari'ia tradition of cutting out the tongues of blasphemers? Or just the things your religion holds to? IP: Logged |

Actually the US is not a democracy. Ask jwhop..or anyone that understand the Constitution and the way Our govt works. Democracy is the majority shouting down the minority. A constiturtional Republic was meant to protect the minority as well. Thst the original concept of a vote for every free man excluded women, people of colour and all se rvants has been altered steadily over the years.The Bible is not the Constitution and gay people are entitled to equal rights, just as women, jews, muslims and nonwhite non-landowning people are now ALL considered citizens included in the Constitution. As such, your BELIEFS are safe but when you seek to deny others their RIGHTS because of them you are no longer within your rights. Your Religious beliefs don't make it ok to stone adulterers or homosexuals. And since "judge not" is a major premise of Christianity I find the religious defense a smokescreen anyway. Say what you like but what you DO must allow those Equal Rights to ALL. So it gets complicated. IP: Logged |

It's not at all a slippery slope. We can't indict without finding that the person is guilty "beyond a reasonable doubt." A murder conviction relies on motive and intent so why would hate crimes be any different? It's not about mind reading, just as it's not with a typical murder conviction. If someone executes someone else shouting, "Kill whitey!" or "Die, n*****r!!" such as what Dylan Roof we can reliably say that is a hate crime. And should be treated and indicted as such. Are you now claiming hate crimes never happen? Well, that's just stupid.

Hate crimes are a dangerous concept because they are mind reading. If I kill a white person, I should be punished the same as if I kill a black person or a gay person. Once you start trying to "figure out the mindset" of someone, you have gotten into murky waters, which are not good, legally.------------------

I tend to agree with that. Which is why someone's Religious Mindset (their belief is a choice) is no excuse under the law for murder, or refusal of service. Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's and unto God what is God's. Nowhere in the Constitution does it say that religious freedom exempts one from the law of the land. It says Congress may not establish a specific state religion or interfere with peoples' faith (mindset) practices. Still waiting for an example of the bible judging homosexuals as not of God.

There is another awful think happening. The government is going to force people to move into neighborhoods, in the manner if which there was forced busing. This is another freedom eroding *sigh*------------------
