Stay very hydrated, nurse on both sides often, don't wear anything that presses against the breast, ie some slings, try taking lecithin, an herbal supplement and use lanolin with every feeding to heal nipples.

I know you already know all this. I wish I could help.

Ah the bane of all breastfeeding mommies!poor pix

Is it on the same breast again this time? I'm thinking that if it's a different breast it might be a latch issue. Otherwise, I've read that lecithin and/or evening primrose supplements work wonders - in addtion to the usual vitamin c and garlic for the immune system. Are you engorged? I was horribly engorged the first few months and I'm shocked I didn't come down with a plugged duct.

I'll say rest, rest, rest but we both know how ridiculous that sounds. I laugh hysterically when people tell me to rest. I can't imagine having 3. You're a trooper. All Hail the Pix Goddess!

* I got away again!!!

Thanks.. talk about Goddesses!!
You women rock my world.

I haven't heard of lecithin, I'll look into it, I was hoping the midwife today would have some tips.. but no, she just reinforced what I already know and do.

It's the same breast. Every two weeks since his birth, it seems to clog up... I am not engorged now, he seems to be emptying me. I was before, but I think at this point, we've normalized a bit.
During the infection, yes, it is hard where it's clogged.. and in fact, oddly, it seemed to migrate around the breast last time.
I have some tenderness today, but it isn't nearly as bad as it was, so I am hoping by nursing voraciously and antibiotics (unfortunate but necessary) we'll nip it in the bud before it 'begins' .

I don't think it's initially a latch issue, but he does seem to get lazy occasionally.. so he'll fall asleep and let the nipple fall out of his mouth, realize it and then clamp down, and start sucking on just the nipple. i stop it when he does that, but I think once he did it, it damaged the tissue and it wants to re injure the area, with the smallest inclination.

this part sucks, but I hope it's over.
I'm normally so lovey dovey about the breastfeeding relationship.
I hope we work the kinks out. I'm not stopping even if I have to lob my breast off. ( ooh, bad visual, sorry) But that's how strongly I feel about it, which is why it sucks when it hurts, cuz I am stubborn enough to do it even if it's agonizing.

I'll check out that link, Blue.. thanks, love.

Thanks for letting me ramble on.

oh, and by the way.. three kids isn't so bad.. the others are older, and in school most of the day anyway. Nighttimes and mornings are rushtimes though.
When i used to work evenings, and they were in school, I was on here more....
now I am rarely on.. I'm too busy.

Pix ~ use fresh cabbage leaves on the place where the plugged duct is. Judiciously please as it can reduce milk supply. Another thing is to rub downward towards the nipple on the place with the owie in a hot shower. Put some hot compresses on it. There's a tea for this, but for the life of me I can't remeber what it's called. Poo.

FU ~ Are you drinking enough water? Things to take to increase milk supply: brewer's yeast 3 dessertspoonfuls a day, dill seeds as a tea, fennel seeds as a tea, lettuce, fenugreek, ,turnips, ,peanuts, watercress, raspberries, goat's rue as a tea, alfalfa, nettles, mistletoe, milk thistle. Also have a beer, one that's got a large hop content. A pressure point for milk production is the corner of the nail of the little finger on either hand. gently bite it.

When our twins were 4 months, I had the same problem. I too was of the "NO formula" ilk. It seemed like no matter what I tried, they were still hungry. I was nursing constantly. I ended up giving them food, and after that they were very content, and I got some sanity back. Just do what your heart tells you is best. My motto after having twins became this: As long as we're all healthy and alive, I'm doing it right.

You can do it ladies!
Love,
GG

You know what? Things are better. I pump what I can, nurse when I can, and fill in with formula. It's not my ideal, but there's no sense in driving myself crazy over it. I feel less stress, happier about myself since I don't have to deal with the constant "failure," and this translates to more quality time with my family. And isn't that the point?

After all, myself and nearly everyone I know was formula fed and we didn't die from it.

Still, next time around I plan to breastfeed exclusively. But if I have to resort to formula again, then I'll do that.

I have no doubts that if I really tried harder I could make this happen with my daughter. But I've chosen not to try harder, and instead to just enjoy!

fantasic future, fantastic!

i'm better now too (knock on wood) he's eight weeks old, and seems to not give me any new issues in a while.
thankfully.

i can enjoy him, and our feeding relationship without pain.
i'm glad things normalized and now i have more compassion and empathy for women who have a hard time with it.

Great news, Pix!

I've never dealt with those issues, but it must be awful. I'm glad to hear you're doing better!

P.S. Isn't it about time for some new pics of your little guy?
