I had Implanon in for a while, I know it seems pretty unconscious to do that. But with three little ones and getting pregnant easily I couldnt take the chance so I did what was easy. I had it out yesterday, I already feel MYSELF again, the side affects creep up on you with all hormone/drug contraception. Fatigue, mood swings, bleeding, spaciness, ect...

I decided on a copper IUD, the only NON-Hormonal, NON-permanent treatment for contraception, besides the obvious things you can do yourself.

Me: I'm not happy with the way synthetic hormones react with my body so I want the copper IUD. I want to ovulate and have a NATURAL cycle.

Dr: BUT you'll still get your period! (with Mirena you get shorter, non painful pretend bleeds every month)

Me: Yes.

*roll eyes*...

What part about wanting a natural cycle did she not understand? When you 'bleed' on hormone contraception, it's not a period, its a pharmacological induced bleed in a cycle of a month to reassure a woman she still gets her period.

Not only that, the Mirena which is a drug IUD is FREE, but I have to pay 200 for the one that does not contain drugs, they are both 99.7% effective.

It's like they want you on drugs or something...

Anyone use it?

I think its my best option for preventing pregnancy in a drug free way.

Not sure about the copper IUD, but I have had Mirena in since after my daugher and have not had any side effects. (very fortunately) I nursed her also, so I didn't have a period anyway. It seems a bit odd not to have one, but after 16 years of severe clotting, cramps and excruciating back pain from my natural cycle (I had uterine issues to begin with apparently, 27 week pre term labor being a side effect of THAT), so I have no complaints. I have a friend that had a severe reaction including extreme muscle fatigue, her hair began falling out, and strange spots on her body. It's strange how everyone reacts so differently to the same chemicals. I have to say I am appreciative of them, I was pretty miserable with my situation with my hormones and period before them. I also had never really taken birth control as I had been told I could not get pregnant. (never believe that one!!)

I know my grandmother would NEVER recommend a copper IUD. She ended up with a complete hysterectomy due to hers.

I hope you can find what works for you. I'm glad I did.

Oh I'd recommend a Gynefix. It's a copper IUD but on a flexible metal thread so you it moves with your body compared to a T shape. Like in this picture: http://www.dr-ulrich.ch/2-bilder/gynefix.jpg

I have the iud for a few months now, normal cycle, I don't lose more blood then when using the pills. The insertion was very painful though! My first and second period was heavy but after that everything was normal. So glad I got off the pills! Lost some weight, heart pain gone, good sleep no mood swings. I cherish my normal cycle now, makes me embrace my femininity more.

I have had both the copper 7 and the copper T.
Loved them both.
I do not think they make either any longer.
It was for me the best birth control.

Thanks for sharing, Ghani, glad the common one works for you, I have a terrible reaction to those hormones some subtle and not so subtle, and that is scary about your Gran , but I was told that is very very rare, could it have perforated her uterus?

Thanks Panda, Lexx, *sigh of relief! From all the people I have asked, nearly all still have had a normal period and all that with the copper. I was told to take zinc so I don't over-absorb the copper? I probably should research that. I do NEED a normal cycle- or I go bananas, normal for me though, is terrible cramping but normal flow. I can always take some aspirin or something for the pain. Otherwise no complaints. I must ovulate or my libido is reduced, (noticeably). Ovulating turns me into a primal sexual being and my husband does not want to miss out on that. LOL

Thank you Ladies. ♥ ♥ ♥

I'm also curious as I've never heard of a copper IUD before & didnt know this option is only available to ladies whove given birth?

Like you Regardes I don't want children. Have seen too many wacky changes in women who have had children too. What was once a nice girl turns into a hormonal psychopath (am thinking of two friends of mine) after giving birth.

And I don't know about the side effects of Mirana, but am about to look into them...

I had a copper IUD (Paragard) for years and loved it.

I had normal cycles and didn't have to think about my birth control.

The above posters are right, though - in the US, at least, many docs are hesitant (or flat out refuse to) give women who haven't given birth an IUD. It apparently stretches back to an early IUD design (in the 70s) that had a cloth string and was prone towards causing infertility.
They just don't want the possible liability.

I was told by one that some will if you sign a waiver, but I didn't pursue it further until post-kiddo.

Sorry to hear you are so fearful of that, Regardes.

I'm looking into options for shorter lighter periods, or to have none at all. Mine arent like the average woman's period and I've had enough.

I'm very sorry for your past experiences and present fears

It may be possible to find a physician willing to give you an IUD.
http://www.goaskalice.columbia.edu/9418.html

It's been years since I asked (2001/2002), and (according to my preliminary research) there have been more studies showing the safety and efficacy of IUDs in women who have never had children.
Now, the right doctor will have more solid footing for following your desires.

Good luck.

Copper IUD or ANY IUD is available to anyone with or without children!

You just tell your doctor that is the method you have chosen. Im from australia though. You can even get tubes tied if u don't have kids- its YOUR choice but there is expert advice given and you don't have to agree with your Doctor.

I think a non hormonal method is preferred after children because the less you mess with hormones the better it is. Birth hormones are very intense and can mess you up for a while, luckily I avoided PPD but find hormonal birth control can create some dull moods. Women with pPD should not take the pill (scary!) I would always advise against it for anyone/ there is a website I'll link to here later when I find it "the problem with the pill" and hormonal contraception in general. (some women really love it though so that's ok too, if it works for you)

Anyway I'm posting in my phone so can't reply in detail to you yet regardes. Take care

**I don't want to edit too many posts or make a habit of it, but I've heard about people whom I know getting busted lately for things that they've said, so I am trying to be more careful about discussing more 'delicate' things

Hi Regardes,

I'm in my twenties and I've never had children before. I have a Gynefix spiral that is much smaller than a conventional T or 7 shaped spiral. Therefore it's also recommended for young people. I had it done by a very experienced gynecologist (the inventor of this IUD) just to be safe. He did nothing but placing IUD's for 15 years so I really trusted him.

During the whole procedure it was painful three times for 5 seconds each (speculum, cervix, anchoring), and the whole procedure was over in 2-3 minutes. No pain afterwards at all. Period is normal after 2 months.
I'm from Europe though, I am not sure whether this type of IUD is availably in the US ... Here doctors push really hard too for girls to take pills but if you make clear you don't want any hormones, they have to respect your decision! I'm sorry you have to live with this anxiety I really hope that you can find a good solution soon!

Hope it works out for you Regardes and you have a nice enough Doctor! In most cases, your Doctor should take your instructions while their job is to explain the risks but if you still want it then they should be able to help you out safely. I have been through several Doctors before finding the right Doctor for my family, (anti-vax family) I finally found one who is open minded and respects all my decisions, I hope you have the same, it makes life easier and they are easy to talk to.
I'm happy to talk about any of these things so feel free to ask anything.

Sadly in the US, the laws AND insurance won't cover IUD's for women that have not had children, as I understand it. I don't know if you were to say eff it, I'll pay myself, if they would then do it. Probably a waiver would be involved.

It is SO unfair. As you put it SunChild, it's YOUR body, and YOU should be in control of how you treat it. If we can buy cigarettes and alcohol and all manner of drugs, and mistreat our bodies in that way, why can't we get something like this which is a preventative measure of our choosing? It is completely senseless to me.

My daughter's Godmother is living in Sydney working as a nurse, and I think she is loving the medical system over there compared to what she witnessed here in the States.

Good luck to anyone who wants to take control of their own bodies. I pray the system will work with you, rather then oppress your choices.

I am glad you got off hormonal ways as hormones are so very intricate that I feel reluctant to interfere.
