If you know anyone in Los Angeles, it might be a thoughtful gesture to drop him a goodby note. He is going away, you know.

Any day now. Flop. Just like that.

This prediction is not new of course. Seismologists have been saying it for years: An earthquake is going to rip California off the map and drown it in the Pacific. Now it comes on new authority. The Apostles--not necessarily all 12 of them--have predicted it and I certainly am not about to refute anything the Apostles say.

The Apostles, you may not know, are the Beatles--or were the Beatles, before they broke up. Anyway, astrologer Linda Goodman, author of the best-seller, "Sun Signs," claims the Beatles are/were the reincarnations of the disciples (John, Paul...Ringo?)and that it looks bad for Los Angeles.

"I'm convinced Paul McCartney and the Beatles are descendants of the Apostles and got where they are (were) to deliver a message." she said. Part of the message, unfortunately, for those of us who think Los Angeles deserves to live, are the lyrics to the Beatles song which read:
"There's a fog upon L.A., my friends have gone away..."

Linda Goodman is an articulate, level-headed young woman who calls her stars as she sees them. She does patients horoscopes for psychiatrists and doctors. She has written a volume of poetry, "Venus Trines at Midnight," that is selling well. She has nothing at all against Los Angeles. But she admits it's spooky.

"It blatantly predicts the earthquake," she said. "I'm surprised most people haven't noticed."

Linda Goodman offers this information in good humor, smiling, rattling ice cubes in her glass. She does not say she is kidding. For those citizens who might be offended by her proposed relationship between the Apostles and the English rock group, she begs to point out that the disciples "were not all angels. After all, Peter went around cutting off people's ears."

Astrology, she says, has its roots deep in religion as it does mathematics, philosophy, geology and, certainly, space.

Many astrologers, in fact, are convinced that Jesus Christ--like Hippocrates--spent his formative years with the Essenes, an ascetic Jewish sect in Palestine, studying astrology.

"Just listen to the message." she says. "It's there."

If this sort of message amuses you, it remains doubtful that Bell Telephone will be amused by Miss Goodman's prediction concerning extra sensory perception (ESP) in the next century. "We won't have telephones by the year 2000." she said. "We'll all be communicating by thought."

There are, she says, unseen electrical currents that pass between all of us, communicating. Distance is no factor. "This is what the kids are trying to tell us." she said. "We talk, touch, and make babies, but there's a veil between us. We don't communicate."

Time and education will solve this problem, she says, although it seems we're behind the more disciplined, astrology-minded Russians in this particular field.
