BAR tenders, or BAR maids, don't just know about alcoholic beverages. They know about non-alcoholic beverages too -- especially for the teetotalers and kids who stop by the bar with their parents. quote:
A History of Root Beer Early History
That carbonated, creamy, soft and foamy drink we love known as Root Beer has a long history. In 1265, the British Isles enjoyed a Dandelion and Burdock beverage; it was a naturally fizzy soft drink and is still made there today. During medieval time sanitation was so bad there was very little clean water to drink, so the people who drank from wells, rivers or streams became sick. It was healthier to drink wine, spirits, tea, and small beer. It is told in Belgium that St Arnold, a monk and a scientist studied why rich people were healthier than the poor. His answer was in what the people drank, water or a brewed drink. It was important to have a low alcohol drink for women and children, so small beer was made. Some historical documents say Shakespeare was known to drink “small beers.” One recipe for small beer was from early colonial America, containing 2-12-percent alcohol, berries, herbs and bark. This was considered a refreshing, social drink. During this time other beverages besides Root Beer was enjoyed, Ginger Beer, Birch Beer and Sarsaparilla Beer. As the pilgrims came to America they had to have liquid to drink and water stored in wooden kegs spoiled much too quickly. Therefore, beer was the beverage consumed. The colonists built their towns and had to provide most everything for themselves. They baked their own bread, grew all their own food and brewed their own beers. They did not have barley or other grains for brewing at first, so they used what were available, berries, bark and roots. The alcohol was the preservative. The beer was boiled and brewed like tea to blend the flavors and kill the germs. It was then cooled and fermented with yeast. Small beer was made one of three ways; from the leftovers of the strong beers, with small amounts of grain, or was consumed during its early stage, while still sweet, before fermentation was complete. This was the real beginning of Root Beer. It is truly as American as baseball and apple pie. http://www.therootbeerstore.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=3
quote:
ROOT BEER is a carbonated, sweetened beverage, originally made using the root of a SASSAFRAS plant (or the bark of a SASSAFRAS tree) as the primary flavor. Root beer, popularized in North America, comes in two forms: alcoholic and soft drink. The historical root beer was analogous to small beer in that the process provided a drink with a very low alcohol content. HISTORY:
The custom of brewing root beer goes back to the 18th century. Farm owners used to brew their own (then) light-alcoholic beverage for family get-togethers and other social events. During the 19th century some pharmacists tried to sell their version of root beer as a miracle drug. In 1876 pharmacist Charles Hires first introduced a commercial version at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition. Hires was a teetotaler who wanted to call the beverage "root tea." However, his desire to market the product to Pennsylvania coal miners caused him to call his product "root beer" instead.[/b] By 1893 root beer was sold as a bottled soft drink to the public. ESP-ecially during PROHIBITION, non-alcoholic versions proved to be commercially successful. In 1960 a key ingredient (the SASSAFRAS ROOT) came to be known as a carcinogen and its use was banned by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Following this ban, companies began experimentation with artificial flavors and preparation techniques to remove the unhealthy effects of root beer while preserving its taste. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Root_beer

And since one of your super powers is an immunity to ice cream headaches, Randall, you probably already know that ROOT BEER FLOATS where invented in Cripple Creek, Colorado. quote:
ROOT BEER FLOATAlso known as a "black cow" or "brown cow", the root beer float is traditionally made with vanilla ice cream and root beer, but can also be made with other flavors. In the United States and Canada, the chain A&W Restaurants are well known for their root beer floats. The definition of a black cow varies by region. For instance in some localities, a "root beer float" has strictly vanilla ice cream; a float made with root beer and chocolate ice cream is a "chocolate cow" or a "brown cow." In some places a "black cow" or a "brown cow" was made with cola instead of root beer. In some areas, for example, Northeastern Wisconsin, "black cow" is said to mean a root beer float where the ice cream and root beer have been mixed together. The origin of the name "black cow" has always been of interest to food and beverage experts and allegedly dates to August 1893 in Cripple Creek, Colorado. The only source of this story is the great-grand-nephew of Frank J. Wisner, who has popularized it through his soft drink product advertising. Wisner, owner of the Cripple Creek Cow Mountain Gold Mining Company, had been producing a line of soda waters for the citizens of the then-booming Cripple Creek gold mining district. He had been trying to create a special drink for the children of Cripple Creek and came up with an idea while staring out at his properties on Cow Mountain on a moonlit night. The full moon's glow on the snow capped Cow Mountain reminded him of a dollop of vanilla ice cream floating on top of his blackened Cow Mountain. As he told the story later, he was inspired by this view to hurry back to his bar and add a big scoop of vanilla ice cream to the one soda water he produced that the children of Cripple Creek seemed to like best — Myers Avenue Red root beer — and served it the very next day. The drink was an instant hit. Originally named "Black Cow Mountain", the local children shortened this to "black cow". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Root_beer_float#Root_beer_float

Here in Minnesota, the Land of 10,000 Lakes (or sometimes called the Land of 10,000 Stories), lived a woman known as "The Root Beer Lady" who brewed root beer for canoeists near Ely, MN. quote:
THE ROOT BEER LADY Dorothy Louise Molter (May 6, 1907 in Arnold, Pennsylvania - December 1986), lived for 56 years on Knife Lake in the Boundary Waters area of northern Minnesota. She was known as "Knife Lake Dorothy" or as the "Root Beer Lady", as she made root beer and sold it to thousands of passing canoeists in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW), near Ely, Minnesota. Various factors combined to give her national prominence, extensive coverage in media, books and documentaries, and tens of thousands of visits by Boundary Waters Canoe Area canoeists. She first visited her future home (The Isle of Pines Resort) on Knife Lake in 1930. It became her home starting in 1934. Molter's life, and her place in the public eye was significantly influenced by the evolution of the area where she lived into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Changes related to this transition affecting her life occurred from 1948 through 1984. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Root_Beer_Lady

Section from Pages 64-65 of DOORS TO PAST LIVES & FUTURE LIVES: Practical Applications of Self-Hypnosis by Joe H. Slate & Carl Llewellyn Weschcke. quote:
It all started in my office at Athens State University on a very cold, rainy winter afternoon during a discussion with several of my colleagues who were assisting with a research project I was at the time conducting for the US Army. We were having SASSAFRAS tea, one of my favorite beverages, when I began to experience a series of very subtle deja vu impressions, which I at first associated with childhood memories of digging up SASSAFRAS ROOTS and my mother brewing tea from them on an old wood stove. But as the impressions persisted and, in fact, grew stronger, I began to suspect they were past-life related. Leaving my colleagues to discuss the research project among themselves, I withdrew to my inner office with its comfortable fainting couch. Using the EM/RC and Past-life Corridor as developed for the study then in progress, I induced a trance state, regressed to childhood, and entered with ease the past-life corridor as I had done several times before in the search for information concerning my past lifetimes. When I entered the corridor, a door to my right instantly commanded my attention with a brilliance I had not seen before. Although I had barely noticed it in my previous regressions, the door now stood out above all the others in the corridor of many doors. It was an elegantly designed door that suggested both formality and hospitality. I approached the door hesitantly, knowing it held something significant but questioning my readiness to experience it. I placed my hand against the door, whereupon it flung fully open to reveal an elaborately decorated Victorian parlor with, incidentally, a fainting couch. Upon entering the room, I found myself, a man in my twenties, having SASSAFRAS tea with my fiancée and a small group of friends.
... Skipping some paragraphs to page 67... ... Paragraph from Page 67 of DOORS TO PAST LIVES & FUTURE LIVES: Practical Applications of Self-Hypnosis by Joe H. Slate & Carl Llewellyn Weschcke. quote:
Had I finally discovered through past-life regression the source of my fear of enclosed places? It seemed reasonable to me that being buried alive in a past life could result in the fear of enclosed places in a present lifetime. Would past-life knowledge finally bring success in my efforts to overcome a lifelong fear? I checked the time—my regression experience had taken only thirty minutes, though it had seemed much longer. I rejoined my colleagues who were still drinking SASSAFRAS tea and, ironically, speculating whether reincarnation is fact or fiction! “Where's the evidence for it?” one colleague asked. Another replied, “Where's the evidence against it?”

The roots of sassafras can be steeped to make tea, and were used in the flavoring of traditional root beer until being banned for mass production by the FDA. Laboratory animals that were given oral doses of sassafras tea or sassafras oil that contained large doses of safrole developed permanent liver damage or various types of cancer. In humans, liver damage can take years to develop and it may not have obvious signs. Along with commercially available sarsaparilla, sassafras remains an ingredient in use among hobby or microbrew enthusiasts. In 1960, the FDA banned the use of sassafras oil and safrole in commercially mass-produced foods and drugs based on the animal studies and human case reports because it was found that an oil produced by the sassafras trees called safrole was proven to be a carcinogenic or a cancer promoter. Several years later, sassafras tea was banned, a ban that lasted until the passage of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act in 1994. Sassafras root extracts which do not contain safrole or in which the safrole has been removed are permissible, and are still widely used commercially in teas and root beers. Sassafras tea can also be used as an anticoagulant. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sassafras IP: Logged |

Did you all catch this pretty interesting fun fact about sassafras?Wikipedia also said, "Safrole is a precursor for the clandestine manufacture of the drug MDMA, as well as the drug MDA (3-4 methylenedioxyamphetamine) and as such, its transport is monitored internationally." MDMA is ecstasy, a street drug commonly associated with dance parties (or "raves") and electronic dance music. quote:
While sassafras oil is an important ingredient in clandestine manufacture of MDMA, MDMA itself does not contain any sassafras oil.Safrole, a colorless or slightly yellow oily liquid, extracted from the root-bark or the fruit of the sassafras tree is the primary precursor for all manufacture of MDMA. There are numerous synthetic methods available in the literature to convert safrole into MDMA via different intermediates. MDMA's unusual entactogenic effects have been hypothesized to be, at least partly, the result of indirect oxytocin secretion via activation of the serotonin system. Oxytocin is a hormone released following events such as hugging, orgasm, and childbirth, and is thought to facilitate bonding and the establishment of trust. Based on studies in rats, MDMA is believed to cause the release of oxytocin, at least in part, by both directly and indirectly agonizing the serotonin 5-HT1A receptor. A placebo-controlled study in 15 human volunteers found 100 mg MDMA increased blood levels of oxytocin, and the amount of oxytocin increase was correlated with the subjective prosocial effects of MDMA. (The term "empathogen" was coined in 1983 by Ralph Metzner to denote chemical agents inducing feelings of empathy. "Entactogen" was coined by David E. Nichols as an alternative to "empathogen", attempting to avoid the potential for improper association of the latter with negative connotations related to the Greek root "pathos" (suffering); Nichols also thought the word was limiting, and did not cover other therapeutic uses for the drugs that go beyond instilling feelings of empathy. The word "entactogen" is derived from the roots "en" (Greek: within), "tactus" (Latin: touch) and "gen" (Greek: produce)) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methylenedioxymethamphetamine
*** PLEASE NOTE THAT IN NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM AM I PROMOTING THE USE OF ECSTACY. SOBER, CLEAN & CHEMICAL-FREE IS THE BEST WAY TO BE. *** Wikipedia also says safrole is on the DEA list: "Safrole is listed as a Table I precursor under the United Nations Convention Against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances. Due to its role in the manufacture of MDMA, safrole and isosafrole, as well as piperonal, are Category I precursors under regulation No 273/2004 of the European Community. In the United States, safrole is currently a List I chemical." And that safrole "occurs naturally in a variety of spices, such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and black pepper and herbs such as basil." The International Fragrance Association has also banned the use of safrole in soap and perfumes.

I see they have some for sale on Amazon: Breezy Morning Teas Sassafras Herb Tea - 20 Tea Bags
Do you have the same kind? I wonder if the Breezy Morning Tea would be safrole-free? Pappy's Sassafras Concentrate Instant Tea, 12-Ounce Bottles (Pack of 6) also on Amazon does say that it is safrole-free on it's product description. I read a review somewhere in which the reviewer said she bought sassafras to make root beer kombucha. My sister makes kombucha, so I'm thinking of asking her to make us some root beer kombucha. I know what you mean...I love his New Worlds article on the first page too. Ellynlvx, YOU ROCK TOO !!!

*** LINDA GOODMAN'S STAR SIGNS - DEJA VU *** It's been said that just the belief in reincarnation will gradually bring the memory of past lives as a gift to an illuminated spirit. However, you must become illuminated to receive the gift of karmic memory, capable of tuning in and out of memory selectively-just as you might tune in or out of a RADIO STATION or a television channel. Otherwise, chaos would result in the mind and brain, leading to insanity. Imagine how it would be if you could not tune in a RADIO STATION or television channel selectively, and all stations or channels were bombarding you simultaneously. You would hear and see nothing but senseless and frightening chaotic confusion. That's why, at your current level of evolvement, you're protected from such certain insanity of simultaneous karmic memory by a form of spiritual amnesia, until you begin to vibrate on a high enough frequency to be able to be selective in karmic recall. The pattern of Karma is not difficult to grasp. What is the mysterious force set into motion by your actions? Karma. How is this force controlled and directed? By the Higher Angel of Yourself, the teacher in your spiritual classroom. How do you break the chain of Karma? By getting in touch with your own Higher Self, via tuning in, as to a radio station or television channel, on the right frequency. How do you accomplish this? Through electromagnetic energy-magnetic attraction. Where do you obtain this energy? From desire. Through intense wanting-needing-seeking-desiring. Intense desire creates an energy wave that joins others on the same frequency level, and varying degrees of enlightenment occur. Once again, "Seek the truth, and the truth shall set you free." The first steps toward seeking the truth are wanting, wishing, needing, desiring. Reading all the books on the subject of Karma and reincarnation you can find. If your desire to know is sincere and intense, not just idle curiosity, you'll begin to experience flashes of deja vu that can lead you into the realms of self-discovery you need in order to selectively remember long ago and far away. You will have ordained such memory, karmic recall-and you will get it. "Ask and you shall receive." It's that simple. It may seem like a non sequitur, but it is, in fact, so simple that it's often difficult to grasp, unless you "become as a little child"-the requirement given by the Galilean to "enter the Kingdom" (of your Higher Self). It won't happen immediately, but it will happen, and it will be an exciting surprise when it does. You'll see. The time is swiftly approaching in this Aquarian Age for all karmic circles to complete themselves, for all Twin Selves, separated so many eons ago, to find each other and unite again in perfect Oneness, bringing about the ultimate Harmony of the Universe. The time will soon come when clear and total recall, vivid images of deja vu will replace current karmic amnesia . . . and memories of paths once walked together will be brought into sharp focus by choice, so that everyone might visit long-forgotten, precious events of past lives. The TIME MACHINE envisioned by H. G. Wells is not a scientific instrument, not an invention accomplished through the laws of physics, but a method of travel within yourself, built upon the laws of metaphysics,(beyond physics).

Chamomile was Josephine's specialty. No, St. Ephanie, I don't usually buy premade blends. Once when I had family going back to Arkansas for an outrageously humongous reunion, they brought back some bark from a tree my Grandmother recognized from her youth. I bought some from this unusual Bookstore/Herbstore that has since closed out its herb section. May have lost its oil by now, herbs are better fresh. It's a real trip, the guy used to make ceramic Alien heads and stuff, you walk in the front door, and there is this HUGE Crystal that stands as tall as your chest... Well, my chest. It is to his hip or so in this photo. From the outside, it just looks like a warehouse, but inside Treasure is hid. The books line the walls from floor to ceiling, and Indian paisley cotton drapes from the doors. Unusual place. You could get lost in a place like that and enter the Astral Realms if you are not careful. I often had dreams about the "Other Cal's" as I liked to call it. Found my original copy of "The Mystical Qabalah" there. IP: Logged |
