ROOT BEER FLOAT Also known as a "black cow" or "brown cow", the root beer float is traditionally made with vanilla ice cream and root beer, but can also be made with other flavors. In the United States and Canada, the chain A&W Restaurants are well known for their root beer floats. The definition of a black cow varies by region. For instance in some localities, a "root beer float" has strictly vanilla ice cream; a float made with root beer and chocolate ice cream is a "chocolate cow" or a "brown cow." In some places a "black cow" or a "brown cow" was made with cola instead of root beer. In some areas, for example, Northeastern Wisconsin, "black cow" is said to mean a root beer float where the ice cream and root beer have been mixed together. The origin of the name "black cow" has always been of interest to food and beverage experts and allegedly dates to August 1893 in Cripple Creek, Colorado. The only source of this story is the great-grand-nephew of Frank J. Wisner, who has popularized it through his soft drink product advertising. Wisner, owner of the Cripple Creek Cow Mountain Gold Mining Company, had been producing a line of soda waters for the citizens of the then-booming Cripple Creek gold mining district. He had been trying to create a special drink for the children of Cripple Creek and came up with an idea while staring out at his properties on Cow Mountain on a moonlit night. The Full Moon's glow on the snow capped Cow Mountain reminded him of a dollop of vanilla ice cream floating on top of his blackened Cow Mountain. As he told the story later, he was inspired by this view to hurry back to his bar and add a big scoop of vanilla ice cream to the one soda water he produced that the children of Cripple Creek seemed to like best — Myers Avenue Red root beer — and served it the very next day. The drink was an instant hit. Originally named "Black Cow Mountain", the local children shortened this to "black cow". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Root_beer_float#Root_beer_float
BLACK COW - STEELY DAN - AJA In the corner Of my eye I saw you in Rudy's You were very high You were high It was a cryin' disgrace They saw your face On the counter By your keys Was a Book of Numbers And your remedies One of these Surely will screen out the sorrow But where are you tomorrow I can't cry anymore While you run around Break away Just when it Seems so clear That it's Over now Drink your big black cow And get out of here Down to Greene St. There you go Lookin' so outrageous And they tell you so You should know How all the pros play the game You change your name Like a gangster On the run You will stagger homeward To your precious one I'm the one Who must make everything right Talk it out till daylight I don't care anymore Why you run around Break away Just when it Seems so clear That it's Over now Drink your big black cow And get out of here http://www.steelydan.com/lyraja.html __________________________________________________________________ And in the Master's chambers, They gathered for the feast They stab it with their STEELY knives, But they just can't kill the beast. It's certainly too bad, but I also find it quite odd that Steely Dan's Master recording of Black Cow mysteriously disappeared from their storage Chamber. I guess we'll just have to wait until (hopefully) the Black Cow comes home... Waiting For The Cows To Come Home... [Donald Fagen + Walter Becker = Steely Dan]

Steely Dan...that is an extremely Scorponic (Eagle-like) name for a band... quote:
With Fagen on keyboards and vocals and Becker on bass, they decide to sign up guitarist Jeff "Skunk" Baxter and drummer Jim Hodder. With the core band recruited, Donald and Walter need a name for their group. Since both of them were avid readers of 1950's "Beat" literature, they decided to name the band "Steely Dan" after a dildo in William Burroughs' "Naked Lunch." http://www.steelydan.com/faq.html
Well, I heard some people talkin' just the other day And they said you were gonna put me on a shelf But let me tell you I got some news for you And you'll soon find out it's true And then you'll have to eat your LUNCH all by yourself 'Cause I'm already gone And I'm feelin' strong I will sing this vict'ry song, woo, hoo, hoo,my my woo, hoo, hoo The letter that you wrote me made me stop and wonder why But I guess you felt like you had to set things right Just remember this, my girl, when you look up in the sky You can see the stars and still not see the light (that's right)... So often times it happens that we live our lives in chains And we never even know we have the key Already Gone ~ The Eagles IP: Logged |

"And in the MASTER'S chambers, They gathered for the feast They stab it with their STEELY knives, But they just can't kill the beast." quote:
According to Glenn Frey's liner notes for The Very Best Of, the use of the word "steely" in the lyric, "They stab it with their steely knives, but they just can't kill the beast," was a playful nod to the band Steely Dan, who had included the lyric "Turn up the Eagles, the neighbors are listening" in their song "Everything You Did". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hotel_California

Thanks, T! I love Joni Mitchell... Right back atcha'... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSg2Nf_OywY Don Juan's Reckless Daughter by Joni Mitchell I'm Don Juan's reckless daughter I came out two days on your tail Those two bald-headed days in November Before the first snowflakes sail Out on the vast and subtle plains of mystery A split tongue spirit talks Noble as a nickel chief Striking up an old juke box And he says: "Snakes along the railroad tracks" He says, "Eagles in jet trails" He says, "Coils around feathers and talons on scales Gravel under the belly plates" He says, "Wind in the Wings" He says, "Big bird dragging its tail in the dust Snake kite flying on a string" I come from open prairie Given some wisdom and a lot of jive Last night the ghosts of my old ideas Reran on channel five And it howled so spooky for its eagle soul I nearly broke down and cried But the split tongue spirit laughed at me He says, "Your serpent cannot be denied" Our serpents love the whisky bars They love the romance of the crime But didn't I see a neon sign Fester on your hotel blind And a country road come off the wall And swoop down at the crowd at the bar And put me at the top of your danger list Just for being so much like you are You're a coward against the altitude You're a coward against the flesh Coward caught between yes and no Reckless this time on the line for yes, yes, yes! Reckless brazen in the play Of your changing traffic lights Coward slinking down the hall To another restless night As we center behind the eight ball As we rock between the sheets As we siphon the colored language Off the farms and the streets Here in Good-Old-God-Save-America the home of the brave and the free We are all hopelessly oppressed cowards Of some duality Of restless multiplicity (Oh say can you see) Restless for streets and honky tonks Restless for home and routine Restless for country safety and her Restless for the likes of reckless me Restless sweeps like fire and rain Over virgin wilderness It prowls like hookers and thieves Through bolt locked tenements Behind my bolt locked door The eagle and the serpent are at war in me The serpent fighting for blind desire The eagle for clarity What strange prizes these battles bring These hectic joys these weary blues Puffed up and strutting when I think I win Down and shaken when I think I lose There are rivets up here in this eagle There are box cars down there on your snake And we are twins of spirit No matter which route home we take Or what we forsake We're going to come up to the eyes of clarity And we'll go down to the beads of guile There is danger and education In living out such a reckless life style I touched you on the central plains It was plane to train my twin It was just plane shadow to train shadow But to me it was skin to skin The spirit talks in spectrums He talks to mother earth to father sky Self indulgence to self denial Man to woman Scales to feathers You and I Eagles in the sky You and I Snakes in the grass You and I Crawl and fly You and I http://jonimitchell.com/music/song.cfm?id=103 IP: Logged |

I really didn't have much choice because that is where the hotels are located, but I'm staying at a hotel on Banyon Drive. quote:
Banyan Drive in Hilo, Hawaii, is also known as the "Hilo Walk of Fame." Throughout the years celebrities in all walks of life have planted small banyan sapling to have them grow into the giant memorials that still stand in their honor. These trees have withstood natural disasters such as the several tsunamis that have devastated the town of Hilo, located on the Big Island of Hawaii. The drive circles the Waiakea Peninsula, near the Hilo International Airport, and boasts some of the largest hotels on the Eastern side of the Big Island. http://www.island-trust.com/banyan-drive-in-hilo-hawaii.html

quote: Come again? Clearly, the two musicians who make up Steely Dan are doing their best to uphold their reputation for being awkward interviewees. In preparation for this Steely Dan interview, conducted via conference call with Fagen and Becker at their respective homes in New York City and Hawaii, yours truly had noted that all published Steely Dan interviews run along similar lines. Instead of answering questions straight, Becker and Fagen prefer to go off on endless absurd tangents with their trademark sarcastic sense of humour. "Has anyone ever suggested you might be difficult to interview?" asked an exasperated Mojo interviewer in 1995, while in a recent interview feature in the Guardian the writer sighed, "each question is teased and twisted into absurdity." http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/aug03/articles/steelydan.htm
