Hi! Please think back to before we had personal computers and internet. It really wasn't that long ago. I bought my first pc in 1997.

SO what would each of us be doing, if we didn't have a computer and Internet?

I would be..........

Reading books, newspapers, magazines

Talking on the phone to friends

Spending time with family and/or friends

Playing with my dog/taking care of pets

Doing something outdoors

Watching TV / Movies /

Listening to Music/Radio

Writing a hand-written letter to someone

Cooking/baking

Going out to eat with loved ones

Gardening

that's a picture inspiring awe!
well, my children are asleep now.
um? i would probably be reading or playing a card game. i enjoy board games also.

Nephthys, this is a really neat question.
makes me remember all sorts of inventions and how they have changed my world.
i think that the invention of the vcr has been the most profound to my home particularly.
it's a really great way to save money and be entertained.
i used to spend alot of money at the theaters, lol!

thought provoking, thank you

-kyle

edit; i have had a pc in my home since 1980ish
-lived in the silicon valley area and this was the norm.

Oh, Yes, we used to play a lot of card games!!! We used to play Uno as well!!!

Playing board games.

We also used to go for a drive, go out for dessert.

Doing things together as a family unit. Not doing so many things separately.

Except for handwriting letters and I only bake occasionally, I do all the rest of that and still relax in the evening on my computer. Though I don't do all of those things everyday.

I did read more before the computer so would do that more.

Watching T.V. just puts me to sleep so I would be sleeping more in the recliner.

I would take up crocheting again and make some afghans and throws.

I would be going to bed earlier at night. I sometimes get involved in online games and don't notice the time.

I would do crossword puzzles, especially cryptograms.

You have been online longer than me, Nephthys. My son built me a computer and hooked me up to the internet in 1999.

the way we solve this separateness in our home comes from a tradition
i grew up with in my own family home. we have a family night once a week.
no matter what life brings we all take time to have this family meeting
once a week to discuss life, home, and family issues. then we cook dinner
together, and share entertainment time with one another. playing games,
going to the park, watching movies, whatever. it seems to work really well
for us. it also keeps the stress level down by keeping communication lines open.

When I've been without my computer I spent alot of time on the phone. I watch some tv, but I also enjoy reading and cross-stitch and I'm studying too.

Having access to the internet is such an important thing to me. I need to be mentally active and it's so great to be able to come on here and find what I want to know. Or if real life is hectic, the internet gives me time out from that.

On the bad side, cleaning and other chores always get put off when I'm on here :P

As fas as I am concerned, I am not hooked onto the internet as such, I have been without internet and computer for 2 months, and it wasn't stressful. But since my work demands me use a connected computer, I could be seen online whenever I am at work (I work form home).

But in the pre-internet era, I was equally good with keeping in touch with people - telephone, letters - they still work magic!

aye aye Kudos to that! I could have thought on the same lines rather than belittling my own self last day.

I don't think it would make that much of a difference in my life.

The major differences I can think of is that I'd use the library more for research since I didn't have the net. I'd use up more paper in writing my fics and stories. And I'd have the time to take up various roleplaying games and LARPs (from D&D, to V:TM, to cowboy action shoots). Since I didn't spend money on the net (monthly fees, equipment, maintainance, etc), I'd be able to afford to play those games, too. And I'd probably have more DVDs than I do now for when I just want to be alone and not read. That is, instead of YouTube, I'd watch more Buffy and Firefly.

All in all, not a big difference IMO. With the net, I can do more research and use less paper, so it's a good thing, IMO. Not to mention the uses in business, communicating with people long distance without paying long distance fees, etc.

One day I plan to get a cam. And I hope to get enough that I can afford a comp with cam for my granny so that she and I (and my cousin Zack) can chat over the net and maybe even make vids for each other. I know that would cost, but so would long distance calls, and timing phone calls can be pretty hard, whereas on the net you can interact at your own pace when you feel like it and all. And with the cam, see each other, too. Plus, it will be saved for posterity (ie, like after my granny dies, I can still see and hear her on video).

I always say the computer has only brought more on line shopping into my life so i guess that would stop. I too can live without one. It is fun but not necessary.

*sigh* Oh, I am so disappointed that negativity has entered this thread. Lotus, why did you have to start that here? You know I am rarely seen at FFA anymore and it is exactly due to stuff like this. Blek!

Well I will go back to my little "corner" and Gaia's Garden and that's it. Peace out, everyone!!!

P.S. This thread was intended to be positive and get you to think.

LOL thirteen I hear you!!!

I love doing my Christmas shopping online. No hassle. No crowds of pushing, grumpy shoppers.

I do most of my shopping online. It's the only way to shop!!!

Sorry about that, Nephthys

Please don't let a few people deter you from posting at FFA.

We need positive posts like this to counteract all the negative BS as of late at FFA

I'd play guitar more. Play more games. I'd still need something to keep me from boredom, which means I'd probably be out more spending the same amount of money, but on coffee and music instead of the internet (like back in my Navy days and previous).

yep, there is no internet on an outward bound trip, for sure....

i did this, it was about a month long excursion, and the policy is to leave no footprint.

you therefore collect leaves, sticks and rocks to do your business, and remain sanitary.

every so often you get to jump in stream or pond, but it's very very cold in the mountains to do this. few of us did. interesting, though, how your body tends to clean itself after awhile. perhaps it's the clean mountain air, and constant movement.

but poop in the woods one does.

i would abandon the internet for a month any day to have this opportunity again.

(upon my return to civilization, i found bathroom tissue ineffective, and actually missed "nature" and rocks, leaves and sticks. it seemed so much more "clean" )
