this is the craziest thing i have heard of late. my friend who shifted to UK for his studies says people can buy a tv anytime they want but require a license to get a cable connection and watch tv and then pay monthly cable bills. the license is about 135 pounds.IP: Logged |

I'm not sure why, but apparantly it isn't new to Europe. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television_licence We live in Germany but we don't pay a fee since we use an American Satellite through the Armed Forces. We had to pay for the actual box but we don't pay for a monthly service. The Germans pay a substantial fee for their TV license. In return, we get 12 channels and none of them are like the straight channels we'd get in the US (No NBC, CBC, ABC..etc) The US and Canada do not pay fees because we use Advertising to pay for the cost to broadcast.

South Africa does it too. They even send inspectors to houses to verify whether the license is valid. One inspector came over and gave my mother a fine for +/-$100. My mom had the license with her and she wasn't home... :-( It is a license for each tv, or each household, I can't remember. The reason for this is mystery, but I have a feeling that it is to support the public broadcaster who does not make as much money as cable here ... ??? Maybe it is to prevent the use of stolen tv sets? Or just to bleed us dry of cash. I suspect it is the latter. IP: Logged |
