Guess what? I was sorting some papers and found another limerick I wrote years ago for my kids. It's not astro related, but here it is:

There was an unusual ungulate
Whose hooves were a sight for the vet
With three toes in the back
Four in front, that's a fact
It's a Tapir, I'm sure you have guessed.

I haven't been making any up lately. Been too busy outdoors. It's a winter activity.

They seem to have a certain rhyme scheme?

Yes there is a rhyming scheme and a certain meter. I break the rules because I'm definitely not an expert. I just like to entertain myself, and so I call mine variations on the form

The best way to learn how to write a limerick is to study them, or at least read them when you get the chance. Especially the ones by the greatest limerick writer, Ogden Nash. You could also look up Edward Lear designated as the best by the experts, but I prefer Odgen Nash.

You will get a sense of the syllables and rhythm, the rhyming and the rules in general.
Five lines for each stanza.
The first, second and fifth lines rhyme with each other.
THe two shorter lines in between, the third and fourth lines, rhyme with each other. The pulse of the lines go something like this:

ta-ta-TUM ta-ta-TUM ta-ta-TUM
ta-ta-TUM ta-ta-TUM ta-ta-TUM
ta-ta-TUM ta-ta-TUM
ta-ta-TUM ta-ta-TUM
ta-ta-TUM ta-ta-TUM ta-ta-TUM

or

ta-TUM-ta ta-TUM-ta ta-TUM-ta
ta-TUM-ta ta-TUM-ta ta-TUM-ta
ta-TUM-ta ta-TUM-ta
ta-TUM-ta ta-TUM-ta
ta-TUM-ta ta-TUM-ta ta-TUM-ta

You get the gist, right?

One thing to remember is that there has to be some kind of twist, or joke, in the end.
That's what gives it the humor. Limericks are fun, loose, zany, anything but serious. That's why I like them. Short and sweet.

Randall, stop by the library and pick up a rhyming dictionary. That may help you get started.

Looking forward to one of yours.

---

here's one just for you:

From the South there's a gent we call Randall
His new poem would sound great afterall
From the South he would write
With much ease, not with strife
And when spoken we'd translate the drawl

---

don't really know if you have a southern drawl but it fits the poem

It seems like we should start a limerick thread with a new heading so other writers can contribute their astro limericks or metaphysical limericks. I'll bet there are some very clever writers out there. Or some very clever limerick writer wannabes.

Gemini??? Can you relate?

There once was a twin, with a mind very clever
Who neglected her chores, whatever the endeavor
Her sister would date
The same boyfriend 'till late
Until he asked to be married forever, however

Yay Gemini! ~~ You're quite good at these PS. You ought to look into making a little money on the side with submitting these kinds of astro limericks to magazines, like The Mountain Astrologer, or the DELL Horoscope Magazines (there are two of these).

You're probably already familiar... With TMA, you could ask them for the topic or theme for issues, then craft your astroLimericks around their themes?

You can do this! Why not? You're good at it!! You could probably write and do the complete submittal process (start to finish, inclusive) in less than 3 or 4 hours time, right?

TMA has issues coming out every other month. Have you read some of the "funny" articles they do on astrology signs near the back-pages? I'm telling you, your stuff is just as good as those! ...

I had a friend long ago who regularly submitted things to Reader's Digest, and she really did well!

Haha, why not?

It can't hurt to check into it.

I wrote an astrology song, too. Wish I had enough courage to video myself and post it. Someday I will have a YouTube channel for my songs.

Thank you for the compliments and encouragement !

Still not enough courage.
But I will let you know.

Is there a digital version of those astrology magazines. They don't sell them around here?
