Interesting question. I guess it would depend where the sun and plu would fall in the birth chart to see where it is expressed. I imagine that this in some ways, in the sign that they are in, would be one of the hardest and confusing aspects to have - common sense would say that it would be a battle between independence/distance/objectivity and a need penetation of something. It probably also might lead to a jealousy streak maybe?

Well, I have Sun square Pluto myself. Sun is in Cancer in the 12th house and Pluto is in Libra in the 4th.

It has played out in so many different ways for me but to keep it brief, I would say that it has made me extremely determined to know myself and penetrate my own depths. This of course, leads to feeling the Scorpionic urge to know others deeply as well.

"It is likely that others will maintain a psychological distance from you, because your aura often suggests - in an unconscious manner - that you are 'dangerous'; that your way of looking at things is potentially challenging and transformative, and that a deeper involvement would bring about some unknown change in them. Others could find it a fascinating energy, and greatly enjoy your company; much depends upon their ability to handle it."
http://www.astrologyweekly.com/astrological-aspects/sun-square-pluto.php

The above is often true for me, especially in the realm of relationships with men. I have had several relationships where I deeply felt that the man involved was dichotomously positioned in his feelings. On the one hand, he wanted to move closer and on the other hand he felt very wary of doing so. Like, maybe if he did there would be no turning back. (Muah ah ah! LOL)

This is also probably because I have Scorpio in the 5th house, but I suspect that the Sun/Pluto square has a lot to do with it. And this is probably why every significant realtionship I've ever had has been with men with a Scorpio Sun or Moon.

Maybe with an Aquarian sun and a Scorpio Pluto you would get even more internal resistance...

"You will be hard to understand, appearing quite enigmatic to many, and may often have a resistance towards becoming emotionally involved with others. This is because you are aware of your emotional depths and strength of feelings, and this intensity can make you feel extremely uncomfortable, especially if you lose control when you have fallen in love. You have a fear of not being in full control, and will usually try to create a relationship context where you feel in command of the situation. While giving an impression of great self-control and balance, you often hide the evidence of inner turmoil, which can erupt as over-reactions to trivial, unimportant events in your life, or be forcefully released when someone 'presses your buttons' evoking a response."

Just my thoughts...

What about this aspect makes you so interested in it Juno?

I have it also. I tend to take this aspect lightly because I don't really have a full understanding of what it means.

Sun square Pluto is self expression, ego vitality(Sun) in conflict, friction(square) with intensity, transformation, depth(Pluto)

This aspect could indicate intense experiences can lead to transforming you. There could be power struggles as well as confrontations with your "dark side" or shadow. It can be like battling your "inner demons" This also indicates the need to get rid of any garbage(literally, figuratively). There can be a tendency to brood,be secretive, and hold a big part of yourself from others. However, there is an ability to probe deeply and uncover hidden things. Penetrating the superficial. This aspect can be great for the occult, research, investigation, and healing. In regards to healing,Pluto is the planet of regeneration.

It can be an aspect of great power which can make you very strongwilled, confident, and in control...there is need to avoid to controlling others as well as abusing your power. You can be a force to reckon with. You can be a catalyst for change.

This aspect can indicate intense experience, power issues, and experiences betrayal of involving the father.

Sun square Pluto is not an aspect to take lightly.

Sun square Pluto has affinity with Sun in Scorpio. Pluto rules Scorpio.

hahaha confession time I know someone with this placement, he comes across as bright, articulate, intelligent, pleasent....and under all that very, very strong, so I'm interested to hear from other people with this placement. I suppose also if you look at it there must be few squares that effect the owner as much, both the sun and pluto are about power, so if they are squared you're dealing with two very strong energies that seem to be in conflict..unless the individual can sort it out.

I have it too. I don't pay much attention to it. Here's an interp from astro.com:

With Sun square Pluto you tend to be extremely willful, sometimes constructively but sometimes also destructively. You have difficulty in maintaining moderation in relationships with others.

At some time in your past you possibly adopted the attitude that might makes right, and that you must strike first to gain victory. The problem with this attitude is that others might feel that they have to strike back, as they try to defend themselves against your apparent abuse of authority.

On occasion, you demonstrate amazing self-control, but at other times a minor incident will put you in a tailspin. This could result in friends and associates keeping their distance from you.

You do have executive ability and the talent for managing ambitious enterprises. But you must realize that others have usually made some contribution to your success. Take care not to become hardened and insensitive to the feelings of those you must deal with. Try to compromise.

Professional and domestic crises should help you realize that you must work hard to gain mastery over your powerful ego and drive.

Here's a good interp I feel is true in my case:

Sun square or opposition Pluto
People born under a challenging aspect between the Sun and Pluto are prone to inner tension and negative, self-destructive behavior. When things are going well, they suffer from fears that something will come along to change that. Their thought patterns can be negative, and if not kept in check, they can seriously undermine their happiness. Constantly worrying that the rug will be pulled from under their feet can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Sun-Pluto have tremendous power and strength--when they learn to accept and use that strength, instead of fear it, they are some of the most effective, insightful, helpful, and healing people around!

One of the most prominent characteristics of these aspects is the tendency to be intensely dissatisfied with their personal accomplishments and expressions of self. These people put a lot of pressure on themselves regarding their own endeavors. A child, for example, with a challenging Sun-Pluto aspect may work hard at a piece of artwork, decide it's not right, destroy it, and start all over again. This same child will be especially disturbed if they feel people are watching as they create their artwork. This is a simple example, but it's quite descriptive of the tendency for these people to be dissatisfied with their creative self-expressions, and to want to hide their expressions from others until they feel the output is "right". This is largely due to a perceived inability to express or reveal their true personalities to others. They experience a simultaneous urge to express themselves and to hide themselves. They struggle with a deep need to control themselves and life itself. Rarely are Sun-Pluto people completely satisfied with themselves. They are especially sensitive to criticism, and feel the need to "redo" themselves often. There is a marked fear of losing control, and this might stem from some traumatic event in childhood, or the childhood might have been crisis-ridden or emotionally-charged in general. As such, these people are often intensely fearful of, or threatened by, change. This can express itself through attempts to control their lives such that they can manage their fears of being taken off guard. Of course, this generally backfires!

Another characteristic of these aspects is an intense need for privacy. They fear being exposed or invaded. Again, this is an expression of their dissatisfaction with the self they are projecting, and they are generally uncomfortable with their evolving ego. They seem to undergo many identity crises, and they feel the need to control what others know about them and think about them. Their fear of exposing themselves might cause them problems with others, who may begin to mistrust them, presuming that if they are so protective of their privacy, they must have something sinister to hide. The truth is, they struggle with a dissatisfaction with themselves and their fear of being exposed is really about a fear of being vulnerable, as well as a manifestation of their own identity crisis.

These people are quick to read between the lines. They need to be careful, however, to avoid reading negative or dark things into situations or people. They need to know that if their tendency is to hunt for dark "truths" rather than unbiased truths, this is a self-destructive behavior that stems from fear. Many people with these aspects are overly attached to things, habits, people, and their past. At the root of this is an intense fear of change that would threaten to make them vulnerable. Still, Pluto's goal is to transform through change. Inevitably, Sun-Pluto people will have to face their fear of change and accept that they need change in order to grow.

We all have a dark, irrational side, but people with Sun-Pluto in hard aspect are forced to confront it and integrate it into their personalities. It can be a challenging process, especially because the Sun rules all that is "light" - the rational, conscious mind. The Sun is noble and righteous by nature. Aligned with Pluto, it can have a hard time accepting the darker, intense, and often irrational Pluto energies into one cohesive whole. This is the challenge that Sun-Pluto face. If these people find themselves using manipulative tactics to get their way, or attempting to control others through subversive tactics, it is a clear cue that they are mishandling Pluto energies. It is a powerful indication that their self-image is low. There is little satisfaction derived from getting our way through manipulation. It only serves to make us feel less effective in the long run and on a personal level. If I were to win a favor by using subversive tactics, what will it prove to me? It will reinforce my feeling that I am not effective just by being myself. And, effectiveness is something Sun-Pluto craves.

Especially with the opposition, these people might attract manipulative, possessive, or jealous people into their lives. With the square, there is more of a tendency to attract dangerous or upsetting situations in the life. Either way, these people need to get in touch with the reason why they are attracting these people and situations. In all likelihood, they are not handling their own fears effectively, and they feel they are not in control of their lives, and a looping pattern is thereby created. They eventually come to realize that they are very strong people with enormous resilience. They need to identify with, face, and accept their "dark" side. Self-acceptance is the key to handling this aspect. Channeling Pluto energy into constructive channels is also important.

Here is a flower essence report interpretation of Sun square Pluto

The correct use of personal will, charisma, and power is a major life lesson for you: you must learn to be a positive force. As you learn to claim your power, you may encounter powerful authority figures who abuse power, undermine your confidence, bully or tyrannize you, and it is up to you to choose how to respond: to be a victim, to become an oppressor yourself, or to use your own power to do yourself and others good. Quite possibly, it was your relationship with your father (or other significant males in your early life) which was undermining or toxic. Problems with men or authority in general, and a destructive, subversive desire to undermine those in power could result. An obsessive desire to be somebody, to be recognized, or to exert influence may drive you sometimes to do things that compromise your integrity or values.

The following essences would be helpful to you in this regard: SUNFLOWER (balances the ego and conflicts related to the father), and SAGUARO (for letting go of false self-identifications and illusory aspects of the self). For the excessive, egoistic ambition the flower essence TRILLIUM can be helpful and for leadership distorted by self-aggrandizement, LARKSPUR.

Spiritual wounds and blockages in the solar plexus due to subtle or overt abuse at the hands of a powerful person or persons in your life may need be cleared out. Books related to this, which may be appropriate for you, include Healing The Shame That Binds You and others by John Bradshaw, Legacy of The Heart by Wayne Muller, and Guilt is The Teacher, Love is The Lesson by Joon Borysenko. The color bright GOLDEN YELLOW and the gem elixir GOLD strengthens the solar plexus. Energy work (such as Reiki, polarity, etc.) on the solar plexus can also be very healing. Flower essences that specifically clear out withheld pain and toxic emotions or situations include: HOLLY, MOUNTAIN WORMWOOD and WILLOW (for releasing resentment, grudges, hate for others or for oneself). FIREWEED, BISBEE BEEHIVE CACTUS, and STAR OF BETHLEHEM clear out old traumas held energetically in the physical and subtle bodies.

Gemstones that would also be appropriate to wear or take as an elixir include: BLACK TOURMALINE and MALACHITE.

Vocational Guidance Report Interpretation of Sun square Pluto:

You are likely to feel strong and unconquerable and never will resign or surrender to difficulties. You are tenacious and inflexible and want to handle everything yourself.

Your opinions are extreme, concrete and complete, and you don't like half-way measures. You tend to lose your patience easily, especially with those who can't keep up with your pace. You seek a profession where you can be in control, but your authority could be exaggerated and may turn into manipulation. Frequent fights or disputes over power are likely to occur in your place of work. Try to avoid violent, aggressive, impulsive and stubborn behavior.

Astroinsight report interpretation of Sun square Pluto:

You can become a star by dealing with power issues and power complexes. You are sometimes obsessive and extreme in your drive for power. You have strong desires. Once you consolidate your position, you will make advances in whatever you are attempting to achieve. Once you define and commit yourself to a goal, your physical strength, mental energy, and creative powers make you unstoppable.

You can take up a cause, right some wrongs, and fight injustices. You can make changes in yourself and the environment. If anybody can begin again and restructure for change, it is you.

Are you ruthless with yourself? Are you constantly striving for more? Do you punish yourself for not being good enough?

Have you crossed the word "compromise" out of your dictionary? Keep your eyes off of self transformation and you may plummet into a bottomless chasm. Control of others does not bring you the safety, success or satisfaction. Self control is helpful. Self transformation is pivotal. Develop deep roots and you will rise far in life.

I have this aspect in my chart. Sun in Cancer in the 2nd house square Pluto in Libra in the 6th.

I am a very stubborn person, and many times in my life I've come up against issues at work because I don't like authority. I don't obviously argue with my boss but somehow my problems with authority figures comes out. And I do have control issues as well. I find myself fighting for control in just about every type of relationship, but when people easily cede control to me, I don't respect them. It's like I want a fight or something.

Anyway, that's how this aspect manifests itself in my life. I'm a stubborn control freak who is also a perfectionist--second place isn't good enough!

I wouldn't worry, I'm a commitment phobic ( I'm a libra for gods sake...we're meant to need commitment), emotionally claustraphobic, worrier who can't understand why people just don't see the big picture, that includes world leaders and my local govermental representative ( ah the joy of Mercury/uranus) and some of my ideas I know are a bit out there. Oh and I don't trust well

the sun/pluto I know is a perfectionist, fine isn't good enough for him he wants things to be perfect, or rather he wants what he does to be perfect, and he doesn't except mental limitaions or boundaries.

I have to say that all the info presented here was very interesting indeed. It didn't all fit me, but ALOT of it did. Some of it I have worked out and worked through, but yeah, the whole perfectionist thing is me, me, me. I'm not obvious about it, but it is so there.

so perhaps sun/pluto can man ifest itself in the individual needing to control themselves and their output to the maximum degree?

sun ~ pluto ..

It was first explained to me as ...
~ * a basic need to have control over one's immediate enviroment * ~
and .. the more i think on it .. the more that seems to encapsulate it as a whole ..
( .. regardless of the aspect involved ..)
i've got ~ s.taurus ~ p.leo square at 3 deg separating ..

~Juno~
.. you have it by conjunction .. 5 deg and applying ..
( i.e. some astrologers give Pluto a pretty wide 'orb of influence' )

Juno ..

re:
*so if they are squared you're dealing with two very strong energies that seem to be in conflict..unless the individual can sort it out.*

squares be much like ~ fault lines ~ tectonic plates ~
.. sometimes .. grinding with the pressure ..

keep an eye on short term transits to that 'square' .. and the chart native ..
i.e. observe both .. for a guy keep an eye on the mars transits ..
e.g when t.mars is approaching to make a harsh aspect to the natal sun or pluto ..
.. or midpoint between thosetwo ..

* for the individual to sort it out * ..
.. I think Acceptance that one cannot be in control of Everything in one's life .. helps ..
.. that was advice from the aries who first explained it to me .. :-)

*so perhaps sun/pluto can man ifest itself in the individual needing to control themselves and their output to the maximum degree?*
.. i'd go with that statement .. :-) ..

be well ..

I have the same issues with Sun in Scorpio contraparallel Pluto...that's a Sun-Pluto double whammy. Declination aspects are very important. My unknown father had Sun contraparallel Pluto like me. My mother has Sun sextile AND Sun parallel Pluto which is considered Sun Bilevel Pluto. My maternal grandfather had Sun parallel Pluto.

I also wonder about my 1'25 orb Sun conjunct Pluto in horizon chart which is a visual astrology based coordinate. That's the same coordinate used for fixed star parans.

Hp I know do know about my conjunction but it is quite wide so I suppose I don't tend to think about it much, though I've got the whole pluto/venus mutual reception thing going on too. I have always been interested in politics and tactics for instance which I suppose is all about pwer yet my Uranus/mercury doesn't like the idea of tyranny and restriction of others. I've got a strong uranus and Neptune the neptune from my mother and the Uranus from both my parents ( my father main influence is uranus). I'll admit when I was a child I could be manipulative to get my own way, i wasn't a brat but I was occassionally very stubborn.I also tend to do things thoroughly if I do them at all and I always seem to want to delve to deeply in to things, as if the truth however bad is better then ignorance. The guy I know with the square has it at a close 1 degree orb. He has a Saturn conjunct mercury and a moon venus square, oh a trine between mercury and mars too. Very interesting chart actually the conjunction between the merc and saturn I'm familiar with from my family but the Pluto square I'm not.

A person with closed orb Sun square Pluto might not even share much of himself because he can be very secretive and guarded. There is no telling what experiences he had in the past. They can be very intense experiences. I also wonder what his relationship with his father is like.

from what I can tell his relationship with his father is very good, his father is very caring, but works away most of the time, he has older and younger siblings, his mother is a very strong but nice woman, a while back the marriage was in trouble for a bit and I don't think he took this well at all. He has freely admitted that he doesn't become attached easily because once attached he finds it very hard to let go..( which I get when I love people I do it unreservedly, hence the commitment phobic bit, when I'm in I'm in but it takes a hell of a lot to get me in!). I have to admit I don't think he is usually so open with people but I can be A+ at getting people to open up ( I get that from living with my dad, who for a gemini is really deep and hard to read), and we have some good mercury connections, mine aspecting his pluto too so maybe I just get him a bit more than other people in that respect.

if you gemini father is deep and hard to read,he probably has strong watern/or pluto influence.

My gemini mother is the same way. She only has Sun in Gemini, but her Ascendant,Mercury,Venus,Jupiter, and Uranus are in Cancer along with her Moon and Saturn in Scorpio. She is no way near superficial like her Sun in Gemini suggests.

Wow, this is SUPER interesting! My boyfriend has sun/moon Aquarius and Pluto Scorpio, so all this information is REALLY helping me. ^_^ Thank you all for posting this! Also, I know someone with Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Pluto in Scorpio, plus Scorpio's my fave sign, so all the Pluto/Scorpio info is wonderful! I don't have much imput, except that BOTH of these people are pretty introverted, particularly the Aquarian I'm dating. (He's only got mars in seventh house above the ascendent line, which means he's VERY introverted.)

The Aquarian with this aspect is pretty open when we're alone, but when there are others around he's usually quiet (but so am I, 'cause I'm nervous), and the Scorpio is open with his close group of friends (Which I was part of before I STUPIDLY tried to make him jealous!) and not too open otherwards. Hope that helped some! Take care!

how does what make a difference? sorry I'm not working on full brain power today as I'm recovering from putting up the christmas tree and a damn migrain ( which I seem to be getting a lot of latley). If you mean the orb, the closer the orb the more dramatic the effect from what I can gather...so my conjunction is quite loose, while I have other far closer aspects which probably rule me a bit more than the sun/pluto. The Aquarian I know probably has an orb of one or just over, making it one of his main aspect.
