Well, I just didn't like school when I was there, and didn't see the point of being there (apart from learning reading, writing and basic arithmetic, I thought it was a waste of time, and I still do). I don't see myself as a failure; amongst other things, I have gone on to write 3 books - however, I have always been extremely self-motivated, and I found the school curriculum extremely limiting. Everything that has been useful to me I have taught myself (the only education establishments I found to be actually useful were further education establishments, which taught vocational skills, and where I found the tutors to be excellent at dealing with students - the approach of school and university/higher education was not for me, too academic, not applied enough, too ivory-towerish). School is not for everyone, and many kids are just bored by compulsory learning. Reducing the school leaving age to 14, bringing back apprenticeships and more manual jobs, would do the world of good, but is not something that any government would even entertain, as kids all have to be wrapped in cotton wool these days (I saw it even as a teenager in the 80s).
