Am I the only person on this planet that hasn't read any of the Harry Potter books? I even tried to watch the first movie several times and just couldn't sit through it. Have I missed something?

Has anyone read the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe books? Those were my favorite when I was growing up.

Yes, in all honesty, you're missing something incredible.

In my opnion, the movies are not for people who haven't read the books. The movies are for the readers who want to see their imaginations played out on screen, so it can't possibly carry the same weight. I, for one, am always excited to see the movies, but the books are absolutely amazing. Definitely read them if you get a chance.

I am looking for all the books but I want to start from the beginning. I have tried watching the movies and could never get into them. Well, actually I tried watching the 1st one and since I saw maybe 20 minutes of it I haven't even looked at any of the rest. But after reading you guys' posts, I think I will check out the books for sure. I believe a friend of mine has them all so maybe she will let me borrow them. If they are as good as you say, I will probably have them all read in 1 week tops. Oh well, talk to later.

i'll try my VERY hardest not to give any SPOILERS, but when someone has finished all the books, tell me please!!!!!
to all of you who have never read them, if you are adults i know they're called childrens books but once you get down to it, especially the fourth and fifth books, i would say they are almost too "horror" for kids. they deal with really good issues and don't really try and make everything look all peachy, they have a fantastic plot and i'm so glad because the fifth book reveals something none of the others have, but you'll just have to read.....

What? Why not?

I can and I will. If I like the book I might just read the others. Who said it has to be in order? I'll pick up the clues. I can cheat and read the synopsis.

I'll go backward instead of forward. The books will be like pre-sequels to me!

I just want to get my hands on it okay.

Starlover- i think you will get a tad confused if you read the fifth book first! maybe the second first but not the fifth! you wont understand the attitudes and references that are so important to the plot, and even though J.K. Rowling does give some back information you really should start from the beginning....it will make the book so much more interesting having followed the characters through the years...you can only then really start to appreciate what the book is doing/saying

Oh alright, I'll get the books from the library, since you really want me to enjoy the amazing experience of Harry Potter.

Anyway is there some sort of deep philosophic concept (besides the obvious) that every one is so fascinated about? Is there some subliminal message that is making everybody love and cherish these books?

Moonat- I concur, the fifth was fabulous! The 400 page buildup to the action was worth it. I woke up at 5 this morning and finished it at 9:30. I just moved and I couldnt unpack until I finished it. Like you, I plan on reading all five over again. To those who haven't read them- you'll only understand the craze once you've read them. They're just plain GOOD. That simple. Ciao!

I got it and read the first 450 pages in five straight hours. So far I'm not terribly impressed; that's okay though. There's still space for things to happen.

eightdegrees- i know wasn't it great? i actually loved this plot more than all because even though there was a -long- buildup, it was worth it in the end. i started reading them again and i have found soooo many things which where talked about in the fifth book that were also discussed (briefly) in the third, very small hints but i can't believe she remembered to write them in into the new books! i dont know how she does it!
Queen of Sheeba- i don't know if you've finished it by now..what do ya think?? maybe i'm a bit prejudised because i just fell in love with a plot i can't see the bad parts of it but.....well i forgot what i woz going to say......euhm......ok.........post when you've read it, tell us what you think.

toodles

Yes well I finished it yesterday, and while I loved the last five chapters or so, before that it was only so-so. <<<SPOILER OF SORTS>>> In all the previous books, there was always a mystery or something that they were trying to solve. In this one, they didn't really seem to be working towards anything... they were waiting for Voldemort to do something, and consequently, they sat around a lot. I think this was the novel where everybody takes a breather. It was still a good book!

I was reading Time Magazine's issue on Harry Potter and there are some people who are beginning to study these books to find Jungian laws, archetypes, and biblical references.

In my opinion I find it to be a very spiritual book that kid's can relate to. Which makes sense, becuase that's the only way these book would have been appealing in the first place.

Another thing, right now I'm re-reading all the books I skipped, and I'm loving them even more now!

Think about it, you got gryfinndor (LION), HufflePuff (EAGLE), Ravenclaw (Badger), and of course Slytheron (SNAKE.)

In the first book, it was all about the Gryfinndors (Harry) against the Slytherons (Draco).

Gryfinndors are LIONS meaning LEO meaning OSIRIS.
Slytherons are SNAKES meaning SERPENTS meaning SET.

Right now, this is all I can think of but I'm not finished reading the books.

Once again, "NO SPOILERS," QueenofSheeba you revealed some and I was very upset. Just kidding!

*SPOILER ALERT!!!!*

I wasn't sure what i would write so just to be sure.
what i think i liked about this book is that finally, after four years of all this incredibly awful "stuff" happening to him, Harry finally gives up trying to understand other people, he has had enough, and i like how he shouts and throws tantrums at the teachers, i think him being understanding and stay quiet about EVERYTHING that has happened to him would have been toally unrealistic, even though its fiction, it would have been a bit silly.
i like that everything grows more mature in his fifteenth year, he understands things better, and the relationships between the characters is very realistic.
well that like the 100000 time i have said how much i love the Harry Potter books but oh well!
