Yes, this is a thread few will appreciate but who many will enjoy trying to pick apart. Anyone who has similar stories, reflections or information to post, please feel free to share them here. Anyone who disagrees, please try to do so respectfully. This is one thread out of hundreds and I'm kindly requesting from its inception that its purpose not be trashed or misdirected. To reiterate ... the purpose of this thread is to share military perspectives (from any time or place) that are being or have been ignored by the media. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and respect.

Letter from an American Soldier in Iraq with Good News-Truth!

http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/r/rydbom.htm

Summary of the eRumor
This widely circulated email goes beyond the headlines from Iraq and talks about some of the successes from the standpoint of a soldier with an engineering division.

The Truth
This email started circulating after the cessation of hostilities in Iraq in 2003 and during a time of criticism of the U.S. handling of the aftermath of the war against Iraq.
While we cannot vouch for all of the details in the letter, we have confirmed that it is authentic.
It is not a hoax.
We contacted Major Rydbom's wife who verified that her husband and the letter are real.
She cautioned that there are some versions of the letter circulating that have been altered from the original and include commentary that was not from her husband.

Last updated 7/26/03

A real example of the eRumor as it has appeared on the Internet:

quote:
This is really quite a different story from those you read or hear about
in the
news these days. Listen to what is being said by an Army Major who is in
Iraq and seems to have a pretty good handle on the situation.

OPEN LETTER TO FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH OF RICHMOND BEACH
It has been a while since I have written to my friends at First Lutheran
Church about what's really going on here in Iraq. The news you watch on
TV is exaggerated, sensationalized and selective. Good news doesn't
sell.

The stuff you don't hear about? Let's start with Electrical Power
production
in Iraq. The day after the war was declared over, there was nearly 0
power
being generated in Iraq. 45 days later, in a partnership between the
Army,
the Iraqi people and some private companies, there are now 3200 mega
watts (Mw) of power being produced daily, 1/3 of the total national
potential
of 8000 Mw. Downed power lines (big stuff, 400 Kilovolt (Kv) and 132 Kv)
are being repaired and are about 70% complete.

Then there is water purification. In central Iraq between Baghdad and
Mosul, home of the 4th Infantry Division, Water treatment was spotty at
best.
The facilities existed, but the controls were never implemented. Simple
chemicals like Chlorine for purification and Alum (Aluminum Sulfate) for
sediment settling (The Tigris River is about as clear as the Mississippi
River)
were in short supply or not used at all and when chlorine was used, it
was
metered by the scientific method of guessing. So some people got pool
water and some people got water with lots of little things moving in it.
We are slowly but surely solving that. Contracts for repairs to
facilities that
are only 50% or less operational are being let, chemicals are being
delivered, although we don't have the metering problem solved yet (It's
only
been 45 days).

How about oil and fuel? Well the war was all about oil wasn't it? You
bet it
was. It was all about oil for the Iraqi people because they have no
other
income, they produce nothing else. Oil is 95% of the Iraqi GNP. For this
nation to survive, it MUST sell oil. The Refinery at Bayji is at
75% of capacity producing gasoline. The crude pipeline between Kirkuk
(Oil Central) and Bayji will be repaired by tomorrow (2 June). LPG, what
all
Iraqi's use to cook and heat with, is at 103% of normal production and
WE,
the US ARMY, at least 4th ID, are insuring it is being distributed
FAIRLY to
ALL Iraqi's.

You have to remember that 3 months ago, ALL these things were used as
weapons against the population to keep them in line. If your town
misbehaved, gasoline shipments stopped, LPG pipelines and trucks
stopped, Water was turned off, power was turned off.

Now, until exports start, every drop of gasoline produced goes to the
Iraqi
people, crude oil is being stored, the country is at 75% capacity now,
they
need to export or stop pumping soon, thank the UN for the delay. ALL LPG
goes to the Iraqi people EVERYWHERE. Water is being purified as best
they can, but at least it's running all the time to everyone.

Are we still getting shot at? Yep Are American Soldiers still dying?
Yep,
about 1 a day from the 4th ID, most in accidents, but dead is dead.

If we are doing all this for the Iraqi's, why are they shooting at us?

The general population isn't. There are still bad guys, who won't let go
of
the old regime. They are Ba'ath party members (Read Nazi Party, but not
as nice) who know nothing but the regime. They were thugs for the regime
that caused many to disappear in the night and they have no other
skills. At
least the Nazis had jobs they could go back to after the war as
plumbers,
managers, engineers, etc...these people have no skills but terror. They
are
simply applying their skills....and we are applying ours.
There is no Christian way to say they must be eliminated and we are
doing
so with all the efficiency we can muster. Our troops are shot at
literally
everyday by small arms and RPGs. We respond and 100% of the time, the
Ba'ath party guys come out with the short end of the stick. The most
amazing thing to me is that they don't realize that if they stopped
shooting
at us, we would focus on fixing things and leave. The more they shoot at
us, the longer we will stay.

Lastly, Realize that 90% the damage you see on TV was caused by
IRAQI's, NOT the war. Sure we took out a few bridges from military
necessity, we took out a few power and phone lines to disrupt
communications, sure we drilled a few palaces and government
headquarters buildings with 2000lb laser guided bombs (I work 100 yards
from where two hit the Tikrit Palace), he had plenty to spare. But, ANY
damage you see to schools, hospitals, power generation facilities,
refineries, pipelines, was ALL caused either by the Iraqi Army in its
death
throws or the Iraqi civilians looting the places. Could the army have
prevented it? Nope. We can and do now, but 45 days ago the average
soldier was lucky to know what town he was in much less be informed
enough to know who owned what or have the power to stop a
1,000 people from looting a building by himself.

The United States and Britian are doing a very noble thing here. We
stuck
our necks out on the world chopping block to free a people. I've already
talked the weapons of mass destruction thing to death, bottom line, who
cares, this country was one big conventional weapons ammo dump
anyway.
We have probably destroyed more weapons and ammo in the last 30 days
than the US Army has ever fired in the last 30 years (Remember, this is
a
country the size of Texas), so drop the WMD argument as the reason we
came here, if we find it GREAT, if we don't, SO WHAT? I'm living in a
"guest palace" on a
500 acre palace compound with 20 palaces with like facilities built in
half a
dozen towns all over Iraq that were built for one man. Drive down the
street
and out into the countryside 5 miles away (I have) and see a family of
10 living in a mud hut herding two dozen sheep, Then tell me why you
think
we are here.

Respectfully, ERIC RYDBOM MAJ, ENGINEER Deputy Division Engineer
4th Infantry Division

Although by some accounts Howard Metzenbaum did not at any time accuse John Glenn of literally never holding a job, an exchange similar to above did take place over a period of days during the 1974 Ohio primary election in which Glenn battled Metzenbaum for the Democratic nomination for U.S. senator.

Metzenbaum, whose strategy throughout the campaign included questioning Glenn's civilian leadership experience, apparently remarked during a speech that the career Marine and former astronaut had "never met a payroll," or words to that effect. Somehow this morphed into "never held a job" in the press coverage of the campaign (and continues to be reported that way to this day), and Glenn took the straw man and ran with it in a May 3, 1974 debate with Metzenbaum at the Cleveland City Club.

Here, according to political columnist Mark Shields, is what Glenn actually said in that debate (other accounts differ only slightly):

I served 23 years in the United States Marine Corps. I was through two wars. I flew 149 missions. My plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire on 12 different occasions.
I was in the space program. It wasn't my checkbook. It was my life that was on the line. This was not a 9-to-5 job where I took time off to take the daily cash receipts to the bank. I ask you to go with me . . . as I went the other day to a Veterans Hospital and look those men with their mangled bodies in the eye and tell them they didn't hold a job. You go with me to any Gold Star mother, and you look her in the eye and tell her that her son did not hold a job.

You go with me to the space program, and you go as I have gone to the widows and the orphans of Ed White and Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee, and you look those kids in the eye and tell them that their dad didn't hold a job.

You go with me on Memorial Day coming up, and you stand in Arlington National Cemetery - where I have more friends than I like to remember - and you watch those waving flags, and you stand there, and you think about this nation, and you tell me that those people didn't have a job.

I tell you, Howard Metzenbaum, you should be on your knees every day of your life thanking God that there were some men - some men - who held a job. And they required a dedication to purpose and a love of country and a dedication to duty that was more important than life itself. And their self-sacrifice is what has made this country possible.... I have held a job, Howard.

"What followed from the City Club crowd was a standing ovation that lasted 22 seconds," wrote Shields in appreciation of the event many years later. Glenn beat Metzenbaum in the primary and went on to defeat the Republican nominee and win a seat in the U.S. senate.

I live near Fort Benning. Being a military town, we get the truth without the media spin. A lot of the guys just came back home after 12 to 18 months in Iraq. It's a good time here for the families and for the local economy. Anyway, when you hear their side, you find out that the Iraqi locals are always coming up to the American (and other) soldiers thanking them for what they are doing. The media would have you believe that all the children have bombs strapped to them and that the soldiers are hated by everyone. Not true.

Thanks for posting this exchange between Howard Metzenbaum and John Glenn. I was totally unaware it had happened.

I've very familiar with the little pencil necked geek Metzenbaum and his effete elitism.

I'm sure there are lots of letters from soldiers in Iraq. Perhaps not as direct and not as descriptive of what's going on there as this one.

It's too bad we get our news filtered through the bias of the main stream press.

Front page stories when there's anything casting doubt on the mission there or that the situation is not entirely successful.

On the other hand, when it appears the US and Iraqi army are working together and Sunni leaders are cooperating to identify and fight against terrorists, then those same media news sources go silent on the subject.

Their motto is, it it hurts the credibility of the mission, the military or the administration run it front page. If not, then don't run it at all.

And these morons wonder why only about 20% of poll respondents rate them as a highly credible source of news. Go figure.

Eleanore,

Thank you for posting this. I haven't had the opportunity to keep up much with world/foreign/national affairs as of the last few months, so I appreciate you taking the time to put this up there, for myself and others to read.

Great Thread, Eleanore!

These soldiers deserve our respect for their sacrifices.
Let's hear what they have to say.

U.S. Soliders Returning From Iraq Testify Against the War at the Winter Soldier Conference

US Vets, Active-Duty Soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan Testify About the Horrors of War

US veterans gathered in Maryland this past weekend to testify at Winter Soldier, an eyewitness indictment of atrocities committed by US troops during the ongoing occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Soldiers spoke of free-fire zones, the shootings and beatings of innocent civilians, racism at the highest levels of the military, sexual harassment and assault within the military, and the torturing of prisoners. While the corporate media ignored the story, we broadcast their voices. [includes rush transcript]

Winter Soldier Jason Hurd on DN-IVAW
At Winter Soldier, I reported my own experience and the information that came to me about the shooting. I also gave my own opinion that the shooting was indiscriminant and unnecessary; some in my unit may disagree with me. That being said, this incident did cause some debate within the unit about whether or not the gunner over-reacted. Whether the gunner over-reacted is actually trivial in my argument. My argument was that we do react out of fear imposed by the chain of command and that soldiers shouldn't be placed in these situations to begin with. Finally, I have an addition to my testimony that should be mentioned here. I in no way intended to indict or defame the character of my fellow soldiers with my testimony (a point that I failed to make clear at Winter Soldier). We all did what we had to do to get home alive and I have the utmost respect for the people in my unit. My only intentions are to prevent other soldiers from seeing the things that I have seen and to keep Iraqis from suffering any longer." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_cjkWevHNM&feature=related

Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) hold press conference in Washington, DC

Friday March 14th, 2008

This month, for four days in Washington, DC, beginning on March 13, there will be a second Winter Soldier gathering -- 37 years after the first. Organized by the protest group Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW), US veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan since the 9/11 attack on New York will testify about their experiences.

They will present photographs and videos, recorded with mobile phones and digital cameras, to back up their allegations -- of brutality, torture and murder.

The veterans are not against the military and seek not to indict it -- instead they seek to shine a light on the bigger picture: that the Abu Ghraib prison regime and the Haditha massacre of innocent Iraqis are not isolated incidents perpetrated by "bad seeds" as the military suggests, but evidence of an endemic problem. They will say they were tasked to do terrible things and point the finger up the chain of command, which ignores, diminishes or covers up routine abuse and atrocities. In 1776, Thomas Paine wrote: "These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman."

In 1971, a courageous group of veterans exposed the criminal nature of the Vietnam War in an event called Winter Soldier. Once again, we will demand that the voices of veterans are heard.

Once again, we are fighting for the soul of our country. We will demonstrate our patriotism by speaking out with honor and integrity instead of blindly following failed policy. Winter Soldier is a difficult but essential service to our country.

Winter Soldier: Iraq and Afghanistan will feature testimony from U.S. veterans who served in those occupations, giving an accurate account of what is really happening day in and day out, on the ground.

The four-day event will bring together veterans from across the country to testify about their experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan - and present video and photographic evidence. In addition, there will be panels of scholars, veterans, journalists, and other specialists to give context to the testimony. These panels will cover everything from the history of the GI resistance movement to the fight for veterans' health benefits and support.

This concerns everyone.

These soldiers deserve our respect for their sacrifices.
Let's hear what they have to say.

U.S. Soliders Returning From Iraq Testify Against the War at the Winter Soldier Conference

Hear the Eye-Witness Indictments NOT being reported by the mainstream press

Winter Soldier Mike Prysner testimony, Pt1
Part 1 is introductory, deals with the military teaching and using racism,
and the bulk of the experience on the ground which involved him. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4i5ZUfpxnV0

Wth is wrong w/ you HSC?

How about I wait until you want to start a dialogue in Universal codes about something, then I'll come in and spam it unproductively with irrelevant off topic info for the sole purpose of ******** on your parade? I'll wait though until you touch on something dear to your heart and very personal. You'd love that? Right? I'm assuming since that's your MO here?

“War is an ugly thing, [It is] not the ugliest of things. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.”

Isis,

I dont understand your objection.

The Topic of this Thread:

Military perspectives ignored by the media

quote:
the purpose of this thread is to share military perspectives (from any time or place) that are being or have been ignored by the media.

Thats exactly what I posted:

Please, Isis,
try to keep the thread on topic,
and be respectuful of differing viewpoints.
There's room for all of us.

Blessings,
HSC

Subtly or with a sledge hammer; does it matter? What matters is whether or not these soldiers or so called soldiers are telling the truth.

Given the lying, the false testimony by others associated with the "winter soldiers", including the traitor John Kerry and the guy behind this so called expose...whose name is Joe Bangert, a man who lied through his teeth about what he personally witnessed and did in Vietnam, there is little to recommend anyone to believe a word this current crop of "winter soldiers" say.

This is agitprop, pure and simple and given their previous history, one must simply suspend disbelief to believe a word they say.

Jwhop, I think it does make a difference. If he had a sincere interest in Winter Soldiers, he could have confined his posts to another thread. But that wouldn't have accomplished the real goal. And the "what? who? innocent little me?" routine ...

I don't know what happened to this site
I've been waiting for it to work itself out but I guess it's just not going to do that. I left once ... then let someone tempt me back. Big mistake maybe.

I'm sorry Eleanore

Well TINK, you're talking about HSC's motives for posting this trash..which I would say are low and contemptible. I was talking about the truth or falsity of the allegations. I doubt whether HSC gives a flying flip whether they're telling the truth or not.

I seem to recall telling trillian I would like to see you come back. I haven't changed my mind about that.
