True! And complain vehemently and constantly about how much work (and money) they had to put in to it all and how the kids, theirs and others are driving them bonkers, how happy they will be when the holidays are over. Geeez! so fake so stressful! So desperate to feel a familial connection that they will even try hard to socialize with folks whom if it were not being family; they would never give any time to and or try avoiding them, or even thoroughly detest them.I do not get it. Just do not do it! Illogical, time wasted, and avoidable!

You can choose your friends but not your family.

True!
People say that "blood is thicker than water";
means:
quote:
In modern society, the proverb "blood is thicker than water" is used to imply that family relationships are always more important than friends.
I do not agree with that.
Sure if any member of one's blood family is actually also your friend; but;
I prefer to interpret that another way.
Blood can clot.
Water flows.
Family can be an unhealthy connection, and can be toxic, or hold one back, or make unfair demands and have selfish expectations a true friend would not.
Family too often expects one to stand by them no matter how wrong or criminal their actions may be.
I'll take water flowing (not flooding)
rather than blood clotting. (I am not speaking of the good kind of blood clotting) but the often deadly embolism types.

Loyalty makes water thicker than blood.

But loyalty can be misplaced; as in "thick as thieves", or "partners in crime", or enablers and co-dependency and so forth. That kind of "water" becomes thick sewer water sludge, thick and toxic.
Water alone is clear. Only when contaminated is it thick.

Thick as thieves is a really bad one. Are there any good loyalty ones?

Actually rather difficult to find positive ones. Too often they deal with loyalty at all costs even when one of the party is not deserving of loyalty; such as a criminal and so forth.
Here are some kind of positive ones:

quote:
Loyalty means I am down with you whether you are wrong or right, but I will tell you when you are wrong and help you get it right.
~Anonymous
quote:
Be loyal and trustworthy. Do not befriend anyone who is lower than yourself in this regard.
~Confucius

So yeah; too often loyalty is not often a good thing.
quote:
The merits of loyalty are often debated – anyone who has ever been hurt by someone they considered a true friend can attest to the fact that loyalty is a double edged sword. But no one who has ever found himself in need of a true friend can deny it is one of the most valuable gifts in the world. But as valuable it is, it can also be exceedingly rare.
Perhaps one of the reasons that it is such a rare quality these days,
is that loyalty is so easy to misplaced.
How many times have you given your loyalty to a person or a cause only to realize that your trust has been betrayed and your faith has been broken? But without loyalty, families are broken and friendships are empty.

True.
Loyalty has too many angles so a short and catchy saying is hard to find.

You're welcome MoonMystic
Wow!
Yeah I missed it!
So as of March 24th. 2017;
I have been here at LL for 12 years to date!
Many new members would have been like only 3 years old to 14 or so.
Lots of newer/new members would have definitely been under 12 years old!
Time sure has blown by super fast!
To many more decades here at LL!

I hope time will feel to slow down some though.
Not wanting my 80s to feel like they are here too soon.
