Sorry dude, but in no WAY do I see watching tv shows and smoking crack as even close to the same. How many crack addicts do you know? I mean, no offense, if you spend your life in meditation and all that kinda stuff, then more power to ya, but I don't. Do I meditate? Yes. Do I pray? Absolutely! But do I deprive myself of entertainment just because I may be so weak as to let it erode my spirit?? NOPE!!! Polo, all I mean is this....if you are wise enough, you can look at these things with a grain of salt. If you chose to close yourself off from all sources of media and entertainment, then that is fine, I have no issue with that. I choose not to do that. But I turn my tv on maybe once every two or three days, just to break up my time writing, studying, or computer-ing. You know, none of that crap makes me want to buy anything, and never has!! In fact, it makes me have more destain for material things all together, so maybe, for some, it does serve a purpose, can you not see it that way???

"The more sophisticated one's understanding of causality, the more profound their understanding of reality."

I personally disagree. Most people who too deeply rationalize the world around them feel isolated. Children, the mentally handicapped, and people who are out of touch with empirical, mechanistic reality (such as whirling dervishes) show a much deeper and more profound connection with their own lives.

Popular culture is about how we relate with our "tribe", the space we etch out for ourselves in mass culture. I appreciate what you're trying to say, but you should really be attacking spiritual vacancy and irresponsibility.

It's entirely possible for someone to be a functioning member of society and to be attuned to popular culture and still have a meaningful impact on the world.

Polo,
I agree with you to an extent....
but I more so agree with Anti-Rufilla.

Like any other power, it depends how you choose to utilize it, for better or worse. I choose to work with media because it is the fastest & most effective way to help reach people, inspire, educate etc. How aware are people in general about history, war, & politics?? Most dont even care and will never take the time/energy to learn about it...not until they finally see a movie related (ie. Schindler's List) to that topic will they finally learn something. Even a useless popcorn teen movie is important on soul growth of a teen. He/she might relate to the character in the movie, much more than listening to the words of say their parents. However, Anti-Rufilla is right about how everyone should be responsible for what they take in from it. A personal example of mine is, I used to never give dumb movies a chance...turning it off after 1/2hr. Nowadays I realize how much I could actually learn through a bad movie--of what NOT to do. You have to put things in perspective, take what is useful and leave behind the rest. You also have to realize that everyone is at a different level of soul growth. I dont judge people who enjoy popcorn romantic comedies etc, even though I personally hate those kind of movies. Obviously they like it because something about it fulfills their soul's need.

Here is my question to you all: WHY DO YOU EXIST?

Tell me, in a single sentence, what the purpose of life is. What is supposed to occur between the Birth date and the Death date? Do you have any idea at all? Tell me what you believe... I'd like to know.

Remember, do it with a single sentence. If you're really good, maybe you can answer in a single word. Who knows!

Vaporlash, can you narrow these three down into a single idea? What is the primary point of life? Choose the most crucial of the three that you have selected.

i think when people point out the lack of clarity in your premise it is a signal to clarify...not to give them the finger. THAT (the latter) is from the vacuous side of pop culture.

there is much trash out there. and even more commercialism. but given the many native languages on this site clarity can take some fine-tuning before it is reached.

i was not being socratic or even sarcastic. there is much of value in pop culture and there are a lot of supposedly cultured people who could learn something from exposure to it!!

that said, i agree that the means of presentation - especially tv, radio and internet - is DESIGNED to imprison your mind. dick sutphen (longtime hypnotherapist and sometime expert on mindcontrol techniques) has a whole site devoted to this - strangely it is called "the battle for your mind"

so my nitpicking over the use of "pop culture" for what was really meant - is not to derail your topic but fine tune it.

carry on.

So what are we going with, Act or Defend? I think you are choosing Defend, correct? So you're saying that the purpose of life is to Defend... Defend what?

This is an incomplete idea and I suspect that it will only lead to someone misinterpreting things and starting an argument down the line, messing up my thread.

Lets try and be as clear and concise as possible.

Single, complete idea vaporlash... The purpose of life is to defend...

edit:

I'm sorry, before you said defend, but I see you have changed it to "Protect". Protect what?

Okay. Good... The purpose of your life is to take action. To act, or to take action, is to "Move" in some way. When you Act or Move in a particular way, What will be the result? What will be the overall accomplishment for you? what will you have achieved?

If I answer before others it will defeat the whole purpose of me asking the question. I will answer, but only after they have, I'm not being secretive. Now, back to you.

Action produces change. This is true! Now I ask, what will be gained from the change?

I said keep it simple! Single sentence. Look at all of this stuff you wrote. No patience at all. You don't know how long it will take so don't try to predict where I am going with this, just wait and find out. If you do what I ask we might already be finished.

Everything you just said is besides the point. You say you don't believe there is a purpose to life, but if you do what I ask, I will prove otherwise and why.

What will you gain from the CHANGE?

I would have to say - some kind of personal satisfaction.

That's all you had to say. What are all those other sentences for? Your thought process? You just refuse to follow the rules huh vaporlash? I hope you weren't this way in school... HARD-HEADED!

polo c, as I have said already, I find your threads interesting, and I want to keep reading them, but I have seen how you acted towards some knowflakes which I appreciate and I don't like it very much.

I don't want to argue with you because we can disagree on a topic and still respect each other (or I can), this post has 2 meanings essentially:

1- kat and gypsee
2- don't ever be condescending with me as you did with them, as opposed to them, I won't tolerate it.

that's all

now to answer the topic, I don't have a tv because I went to live in a foreign country for 5 years and when I came back, I didn't recognize it.
I have a radio, it's a good company sometimes, and I have internet on my phone. I love watching films hollywood, french, bollywood... and i'm a massive fan of music.

I agree with whoever said (gypsee I think) that when you are spiritually advanced you can take this type of "pollution" or "nuisance" (imo) with a grain of salt. but I'm not there yet although I'm striving to it. so for me, keeping it to a minimum is vital if I don't want to become crazy right now. however, I allow myself the luxury to indulge massively in music, any type, according to the moods.

I say I'm striving to take it with a grain of salt because I went (and will go back again) to loneliness, anger, sadness, and sorrow, and joy, euphoria, extasy, and happiness and like the buddha taught, I think I'll follow the middle way
