JWhop, always with the mountains out of molehills! I know Florida is flat, so it's natural to do. Maybe you should come with me to California

You should come visit me in Madeira Beach MVM. My home is at 2.5' elevation 2 blocks from the beach...but, I know where the high ground is and can get to 37' elevation in 10 minutes or so. 37' is not a mole hill.

Can't go to California during earthquake swarm season MVM. Besides, everything west of the San Gabriel Mountains is going to break off and slip under the waters of the Pacific Ocean.

37' - that's some mountain! in fact in terms of mountains i would say it DEFINITELY qualifies as a molehill!!

just think jwhop, if the west coast actually does fall into the sea how hungry the rest of america will be! since we supply a HUGE percentage of the national foodstore. be careful what you wish for!

JWhop, I don't know where Madeira Beach is. I'm in Jupiter now (close to West Palm Beach). I'm thinking you're on the west coast of Florida?

Earthquakes are rough, but I spent my teen years in LA surviving them
The hurricanes I went through here were not fun, I'll tell you that! My parents lost their entire screen porch and had no electricity for 8 days when Francis whipped through!! Thank God for generators.

Naw katatonic; 37' elevation is the high ground in beach communities. For instance, Balboa is on the water almost literally as are some other California beach communities..like Venice Beach, Redondo Beach and others.

Did I mention I lived in Southern California most of my life? Well, when the west coast of California slips beneath the waves Florida will pick up the slack in produce production. So, not to worry.

Sure MVM, I know where Jupiter is. One of my daughters lives in Boynton Beach and her inlaws live in Stuart. I hate the beaches on the East coast of Florida. Ours are much better...wider and no rocks and boulders.

You're right, I live on the West coast..the gulf coast of Florida on a barrier island almost due west of St Petersburg.

This is the map of the greater St Petersburg area. Look on the extreme west side and you'll find Madeira Beach just north of Treasure Island and South of Redington Shores. The island is only 2 blocks wide where I live with Boca Ciega Bay across the street and the Gulf of Mexico 2 blocks west.

They call this the Florida Sun Coast but most of us think of it more as Paradise.

True, hurricanes are no fun at all but then, neither are earthquakes which I lived with and through most of my life in Southern California...and the BIG ONE is due any day now.

if florida were capable of replacing california's produce record, why pray tell is it just sitting back now?

i'm no champion of california. if i had my choice of anywhere to live in the states, it would probably be oregon, which has beaches of all kinds, the cascade mountains, farms, rivers, desert and a LOT of open space. yes, the western side is rainy 2/3 of the year but the summers are fabulous and you can always take a trip east to the hot springs and sunny weather if you want. portland is a great city and ashland has a worldclass reputation for shakespeare almost equalling stratford on avon...

florida, well the keys are magnificent, and the everglades, but its not my cuppa. i had a great time there once, and the water is fantastic, or was. but the hurricanes they come EVERY year, whereas the last earthquake in my neighbourhood was 20 years ago and actually my neck of the woods hardly noticed it. SF was back on its feet in no time flat. i trust my inner barometer to get me out of here before the mythical big one, should it ever happen.

My ex in-laws live in Boynton... blaachhh, I don't like it there or in Stuart either LOL. Stuart isn't so bad though, and I'm next to Juno Beach, which is nice. Gotta hand it to Florida in general for the beaches, that I do have to admit. It wins hands down for most amazing beaches, sand, and I do love the fishing here.

Nice area you got there, Jwhop.
I'm sure it's lovely. My ex's parents stopped by in your area and I admit, it's nothing like the rest of Florida.
If I was driving out, I'd stop by and bring you a cherry pie, since I've been baking a few of them these days since they're in season

Where in Southern CA did you live?

Wheels, the discovery of Kennewick Man is known world wide...except for merry old England it seems. How provincial, backward even of your archeology schools to not notice or understand the significance of a find which advances the cause of science in understanding how and when North America began settlement...and by whom.

I would have thought the lawsuits and other legal wrangling over possession of the skeleton would have reached British ears. Go figure.

Oh is it indeed? I bet you heard about it first when this thread started. So to draw a parallel Jwhop, you're a businessman. How much do you know about the import/export of shoes in Varanasi? Nothing?

This shocks me profoudly Jwhop. I though you were a learned man.

What a knob.

MVM, I'm less than thrilled about the Florida East Coast myself...that's the reason I didn't buy a home there.

Yeah, bring on the cherry pies. When you get to Madeira Beach just look for the "jwhop this way" signs.

Where in California..in order..Azusa, Glendora, Montclair and Pomona.

How nice, now the pot heads can get high by eating "healthy fruit".

Well wheels, I'm surprised at you.

First, without a curiosity bump, scientists and especially archaeologists are nothing more than navel gazers.

Second, you would lose that bet since I was a participant in a discussion about Kennewick Man here several years ago.

Third, as a businessman, I wouldn't be interested in the import/export of Indian knockoffs of Birkenstocks in Varanasi..or any place else. First quality is the only way to fly.

Fourth, the truly intelligent wouldn't live in an area where shoes are necessary in the first place. Give ma a beach any time.

Shocking, I know...for knob polishers.

Well that's odd, because you seemed to have a lot of support for the scientific community back on the last page.

As for navel-gazing, I wonder how you reached that conclusion. Because I think that's the last thing archaeologists are. Investigation the origins of humankind for the benefit of today's humankind. Hardly navel-gazing Jwhop. Rather broader than that, wouldn't you say? A silly comment.

At a minimum wheels, the least you should do is quote me accurately and I wonder why you did not.

I said this:

"First, without a curiosity bump, scientists and especially archaeologists are nothing more than navel gazers."

See any difference between what you say I said and what I actually did say wheels?

"scientists and especially archaeologists are nothing more than navel gazers."

"First, without a curiosity bump"

I didn't quote the first bit because it made absolutely no sense. The second half - does that mean that you don't think scientists et al are navel gazers or not?

Please elaborate.

It makes perfect sense and follows along perfectly with what you've said previously wheels.

You stated Britain has some great archeology schools...but your friend who presumably works in the field didn't know about Kennewick Man...or didn't attach any importance to the find in the Pacific Northwest of the US.

Surely, no curious scientist in that field would downplay the find of these remains or be unaware of the skeletal remains which predate Native Americans and open up a new understanding of where the earliest settlers on this continent came from and when...unless they're mere navel gazers.

On the other hand, we in America are well aware of the ancient "Iceman Oetzi" found in the Alps..and these remains are somewhat less ancient than Kennewick Man.

Perhaps we in America are just naturally more curious than Europeans...even European archaeologists.

Most the population of America haven't even got passports so do cut the crap. Curious about Taco Bell and worrying about a piece of cloth with some stars on it.

"First, without a curiosity bump" - STILL don't know what this phrase means? It makes no sense. WTF is a "curiosity bump"?

quote:
but your friend who presumably works in the field

I wasn't talking about a friend, I was talking about me. Do keep up dear. And where did I say I didn't attach any importance to the find? Please quote if you can find it. You won't.

And it is simply not possible to know EVERYTHING about archaeology. What's so hard to grasp about that concept? 2.5 million years of human history Jwhop. Understandy? Or am I talking to the Florida representative of the Neandertals?

"Well, Whops my friend"

Correction wheels, that's jwhop!

"Most the population of America haven't even got passports"

Well wheels we Americans are a practical lot..Wot? Why obtain a passport to go places we don't want to go. We or our ancestors have already been there and left? We'd much rather go to places like...Florida for instance. What could be better than balmy breezes, sunshine most of the year, sandy beaches, warm waters and a climate close to paradise.

"And it is simply not possible to know EVERYTHING about archaeology."

True. But then, any Archaeologist with a curiosity bump would be all over a find in the field which directly points to a different explanation for when and by whom the North American continent was first explored and settled...and particularly when the skull of Kennewick Man suggests a European Caucasian ancestry.

"First, without a curiosity bump" - STILL don't know what this phrase means? It makes no sense. WTF is a "curiosity bump"?

Let me clear up this mystery for you wheels.

Curiosity bump or bump of curiosity is a "now" arcane phrase or perhaps obscure phrase which gained popularity in the general populace during the period when Phrenology was in vogue. While most people didn't believe bumps on the head related to intelligence, aggression or any of the other personality traits to which Phrenologists held to be true, the phrase was widely used to denote persons with a high degree of curiosity. Whether or not there was a bump, ridge or protrusion on the skull Phrenologists associated with curiosity is neither here not there. Consider the phrase as one arising from the pop culture language of that era.

Now wheels, you should not believe I chose that phrase..."bump of curiosity" or "curiosity bump" deliberately to fit the discussion we were having about the Caucasoid skull of Kennewick Man. Skull of Kennewick Man----Phrenology, the study of human attributes based on skull bumps-------curiosity bump; it was mere coincidence.

The US is not the 'best', most super duper, amazing, fantabidosi, awesome nation in the World. It is as much a source of ridicule as it is of admiration.
The Earth is a globe of inhabitants it's meant to be diverse, not divided... And maybe you are trying to convince yourself of your privileges but you just sound like a spoilt child.

"Well wheels we Americans are a practical lot..Wot? Why obtain a passport to go places we don't want to go. We or our ancestors have already been there and left? Puuulease what are you six? Still tied to the apron strings? Still believe in Santa Claus? Still trying to PROVE that you live in the best place in the world?

Ok then you win Jwhop... The USA is the Ultimate nation and Capitalism is the only economic system that will work effectively.
Now...
Here's your lollipop.

...well you might want to obtain a passport in order to leave when the bolsheviks come to town. or when they cart you away for owning guns..NOT. but if you are so hot on whether a country lets people leave or not a passport IS necessary to get out of here now. you won't even get to mexico without one anymore...oh i know, mexico is full of mexicans, and nasty gangs and ... also a lot of very happily peacefully living americans who think it is just as beautiful as florida, or more so, since there is variety in the landscape and prices are lower. but closing the borders means keeping us in as well as keeping them out, you know.

Glad to see you've finally seen the light Quinnie.

Probably not wise to send any Bolsheviks you want back to collect my guns or anyone elses guns.

You really don't know what you're talking about katatonic.

Only Mexican citizens can own property in Mexico...and only Mexican citizens can work in Mexico...barring some unusual circumstance where a foreigner has unique knowledge or training which is needed.

Now, if you're thinking about immigrating to Mexico katatonic, I wholeheartedly support you.

there you go again, mr mosely, oh sorry, it'sjwhop isn't it! you forget i have as much right to my opinion as you, and i am as american as you are despite the fact that i have lived and experienced the REALITY of other countries. you just happen not to know any better in your little isolationist bubble.

as it happens there are plenty of americans who own property in mexico and i know some of them. i didn't say anything about them working there but do you really think the mexican government would turn down american dollars for real estate?

but you needn't worry about my moving there, i don't happen to care for the place myself...

but i have to give you 11 out of ten for creating your own reality out of what quinnie just said! i didn't think it could be more obvious what she meant!! but you REALLY are good at turning the truth on its head.

Just joking ofcourse. Jwhop's contributions are as valuable as everyone else's.
Big kisses to you Jwhop xx
