So, I am confused.

My daughters, almost 21 and almost 25 are in a strange generation.

Alot of the kids in my eldest's generation are growing up, my kid included, college, out on their own, etc.

But the younger twenty-somethings betwix me.

They are violent, they fight and think nothing of it!

They dont have alot going on...

(now not everybody, ofcourse, but from what I see....)

Alot of them still live at home, barely work, abuse "substance" and seem to just not give a sheeeat~

But the violence really scares me.

These kids can beat the crap out of eachother and shrug it off like it happens everyday.

The High School my youngest attended was new, but built on the boarder of the ghetto and upperclass neighborhoods, so she saw alot.

Having lock downs at school was clearly not a learning environment as crazed teenage robbers would flee the scene.

Do you in the same generation have similar experiences?

What do you suppose is the societal/universal cause of this?

A planetary transit?

For me in the late 70's, and I graduated in 1980 we were all a bunch of stoners..

We took a while to get it together, but in the end we are all doing well...mostly.

My brother, 3 years my junior, seemed that class/generation were alot of overachievers, on the shirt tails of siblings from my years, these folks are the entrepreneurs, alot very well to do including my brother.

I see this trend with the kids in the neighborhood....alot of them a year or so ago were long-haired, skateboarding, smoking etc.

Anyway, I would like the take of you twenty something~ers!

Thanks in advance!!!

teri~

Remember when we were kids, Terri and we played outside, had hobbies and violent video games and tv shows where not something we focussed on so much.

We also werent connected to some kind of device (computer, cell phone) that kept us staring at a screen to see what our friends where doing all the time. We were instead building forts, swimming in streams, camping out in the woods, fixing cars, knitting, painting, babysitting etc etc.

I thank god that I grew up in the time I did. And am not growing up a kid or teen or twenty somehting in the world today.

I know there are perks and positive things one could point out,but overall, I think it's ******* us up more as people than anything else ever has.

Kids these days will never find stillness within or peace of mind, (unless they are lucky to hear about it and ways to from someone and try hard enough detach and seek it out) it seems.

*note
i'm not blaming all these violent young mens actions on video games or violent movies ALONE....

but i do think they play a part.

along with how social interactions have changed so drastically today.

Saying...there's a lot that plays into it all. For sure.

i'm close to not being of this generation. i'm 28. i do not fight with people and think nothing of it the next day nor do i see this among my peers or the younger. maybe they are in fight club. but no really sounds like the psyche of someone who would..

Man, I see in Fight Club the strongest and smartest men who've ever lived. I see all this potential, and I see it squandered. God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables – slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy **** we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our great war is a spiritual war. Our great depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars, but we won't. We're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very ****** off.

Even the generation that raised those kids. Sorry, can't forget you.. Yes, you do indeed have a great part to play in their upbringing and how they turn out. As much as many of them don't want to admit it and say it's ALL their kid's choice and that they were the best parents in the world. LOL. Yup. Sure.

Nope. Sorry. No cigar.

Man....if I were a young person today...so overstimulated by the technology around me - things to keep my distracted from myself (inner self and mind)....i might have never picked up and read any of the books I ever did and grown so much.

I don't know. I, like many others find it worrisome though. Especially with all these violent shootings and murders going on. People seem to be getting further and further away from their centers. Being distracted 24/7 and learning about life thru movies, gaming etc, can really screw a person up and desensitize them.

Scary times we're in.

i am the prototype! pluto at 0 degrees scorpio.

i love your generation though. (god i hope i don't make you feel old gorgeous) i loved the way the 90's looked and felt even when i was a kid then.

i also love mine. i feel there is immense potential within us to change whole systems. but i've been wondering about those born after us. will we give away control/power.

I was looking at a website for new cars recently and noticed most of them come with TV's and headphones and game consoles for kids to play on or watch while their parent drives.

Whatever happened to looking out the window and watching the world go by and daydreaming (something that is really important to inner and outer mental and artistic development) ? Or talking or singing with the other family members in the car -- getting to know them, you know? Instead, everyone is in their own little world.......killing off imaginary beings with pretend guns. Or watching some mind numbing Disney movie....

Seems parents want to find ways to shut their kids up and everyone is looking for ways to shut people out of their own worlds, headspaces.

Sad.

No I don't identify with that description. I didn't spend my childhood chained to a computer, the only time I was even allowed to use my computer when I was younger was to do homework or whatever language program my mum signed me up for. If I was angry I painted vigorously with my oil paint, or played kickball against the neighborhood boys. I had tea parties with grandmothers, and learned how to cook and sew "like a proper lady" until they taught me how to gamble. I flew kites in the summer and coney island on the weekend. When I was a teenager I didn't have time to "be violent" between being a overachiever in high school, having a social life; going to the movies with my friends, dances, going to the opera, ballet, being in school clubs and working a part time job for the heck of it. Yes there are many young adults without jobs now but there were different circumstances between the first half of the generation.

No I don't abuse "substances",I have a degree and I pursuing my masters this year. Living at home is something I'd prefer not to do but I'd rather live in comfort than with a lazy roommate or a bunch of lazy roommates who don't pay bills, don't buy groceries or worse sleep in their own filth. Plus NYC apartments are difficult to get if your under a certain age and rent is ridiculous.

lol same here. I've been known to spoil other people's kids rotten. Would probably be a horrible parent too as I'm not good at disciplining or yelling at them either.

I just realized this thread was addressed to twenty-somethings so I'll waddle on out of here and try not to break my hip on the way out.

i havent really noticed alot of violence amongst my peers, just stupidity... they make stupid choices that make you want to facepalm. just,a few hours ago a girl i,went to high school with posted a status on facebook griping about how the guy who just got her pregnant ditched her... and whats more she mentioned that he already had two kids he doesnt help take of.... you'd think she would have the common sense to not let a deadbeat dad anywhere near her vagina, you'd think.... but no! things like this are the reason im losing faith in humanity.

i dont claim to be a genius or anything, even though lots of people tell me i'm intelligent.when i say dumb, i mean they are dumb when it comes to common sense. alot of people my age may be intellectually smarter than me, but they lack common sense and maturity.

hmm like transits... uranus and pluto now...? (but that would make this a time of change for them more than ever right? iunno!)
X.x I'm not good enough to say that those things... would be strong enough influence or not..

I do see what you are talking about hippiechick... <3

I'm barely in that time period ~ almost 29 right now..

we just had our 10 yr high school reunion... my high school class always had it together... the ones who dropped out, like myself.. we had plans, we kept to them... I don't know anyone who is living at home with their parents yet from my class. not one.
Everyone is very much involved in their own lives, it's almost like our lives have picked up some crucial pace that we'd not felt before... things are suddenly extremely important that some of us did let fall to the back of our priority lists during the first few years of our 20s... sure.. I think this is normal...

But, my brother's generation... we have a 7 year age gap, all but a day to 7 years exact...

heaven's --- slackers.... xD

my brother is an extremely hard worker, high school graduate, very intelligent... and he speaks for that generation in my opinion.... he sits at home, dwelling in his lil cybercave... avoiding life all he can get away with... honestly, I think he's afraid.... he has a lot on his mind all of the time and our lives were never easy, not my household... not with our economical standing, and the instability, our weird parents, our weird government, these things have all become things that play a part in his current state of vegetation...

Anger - sure -- he has loads of it stored away... He may be the angriest goat I've ever seen... ever. (we joke he gets his temper from my mother, whereas I get my father's temper... she's a Libra... my dad is a Pisces.... world of difference!)

He's something else though...

I look at half of his friends, some of them have struggled, some still are... many of them are big dreamers... not all.

His one friend has stuck to his dream, he kept a job for the past 6 years I'd been gone.... he also fronts a band... they're starting to take off now...

I mention this because to me, it seems the dreams of this generation are so much an integral part of who they are, that where our generation had mostly all plausible sensible ambitions, I find these younger 20's have dreams of being something grand... some of them do expect to have it given to them... some are just sticking to their guns on it... no compromise... I don't think that those in my class or those few before us were such dreamers... we were driven to prevail over each other, we were very competitive...

something that stands out for me here is that during our high school years there was this huge change in the competitive nature allowed between classes... due to bullying...

we had a tradition of sorta light "hazing" well, it was "razzing" nothing personal to anyone... long established ritual during our pep-rallies where each class would try to out-yell the others in the auditoriums... the upper classmen took great pride in this, it was our school spirit, and it promoted this sense of unity, not separation... or so we all had thought for years... the tradition was dropped... very suddenly when the freshman year of class 2005(?) came in... they were crying...... they were hurt... and, didn't or couldn't accept the "razzing" so it became an issue for the first time since it began in the 1950s.... this is one example... how different our generations are... in such a short period of time...

These kids are much more sensitive... the issues to me are the hand-holding of the parents/society, the white-washing of core-issues for bandaid solutions... they don't have a backbone anymore... it's all a bit much to explain for me.. but, I look back at those underclassmen, and my brother's generation... and I can't help but be a little tiny bit resentful....

We - the 80's and 90's generation... we had the Reagon/Carter/Bush Sr. years, cold war, we had bad economy, good economy, we had desert storm, we had the towers, we had the AIDS awareness push, we had a boatload of very severe social causes, global awareness of plights in countries like Africa, Sudan... we had these issues on our plate on the tube, on the radio, in our lives....

This younger generation sorta skipped through that... they only caught the last few incidents of fear... and unlike the older of us... who had those who survived the other wars, nam, korean conflict, cuban missile crisis, even those wwII vets... were still playing very active roles in our lives, in our communities... now these kids... they kinda... didn't... and don't have those figures of authority... they lack the same strong figures to look up too... in a sense... in the place of these heroes and brave men/women making changes from the 50-79 generations... they have jersey shore... I mean... what else can you expect with these things... bush jr.... I mean... there's a certain amount of dignity in Clinton that even with his scandal.... bush always lacked... no..?

they're detached from those events, and it's allowed them to for better or worse become a bit more slack, and lazy in their perspectives... and it's caused a lot of pent up aggression... the X generation was a furious, animated bunch... our teachers jokingly caused us "why generation" but I never much liked that.... now it means something else... "Y" gen...

We asked questions, we wanted answers... these guys... they're not listening or asking anymore... they just live in their own minds... pensive, but not active... so they get that action out by doing these negative things I think.

Hopefully though... they will grow out of it... and join the rest of society, the same as every generation before... leave it to I say...

XD I feel awful having sorta "bashed" all the "tatertots" out there... I'm not saying us mid-80's babies are big fries... but, we got it together a lot faster... that's the truth... and I'm saying we were a lot more aware and involved in the things that were happening around us... we still are. that's all... ^^;

I think eventually they'll find direction but until they find a cause of their own... as a whole, they're gonna be stragglers.. sorry... for the most part they lack direction, and have no solid interest in any one figure/group/cause... but, I think it's starting to change even now for them... the natural disasters as of late are a cause they seem to identify with now... or so I think...

I'm not the best with debates... XD I don't like conflict really -- so I hope everyone will just chalk this loooong post up to my personal vent on the issue... I have no bone to pick with my juniors... if anything I want them to succeed... I always have waned them to be better than us, and louder than us at the rallies... that was always the point... they day they would beat us and we'd pat their backs as they left the auditorium... so in a lot of ways.... that's really truly the problem... they never got to have these experiences, these confirmations that they'd earned something greater... now they have to find new ways to do this and get the recognition...

~_~ sorry for any continuity issues --- empirical thoughts/visions are the only kind I have... they flow but often go off on tangents... (Sadge dominant, too much Jupiter-Merc in my chart!) XD

Funny, same here, only books on tape, or languages, or philosophy going on.

It is not b/c of current pop music, it is more it just seems like a huge waste of time when there is something valuable with that time.

In my friendships what they seem to have his a sort of "dream big or don't be completely happy" thing going.

Very tech savvy but a sort of simmering discontent is under the surface.
