the link is to a story about a california high school that has just said that GIRLS may not wear "skinny" jeans, yoga pants, or other tight legwear because the BOYS will be distracted by them. i would love to hear what you think of this?

And what about preventing guys from going with sleveless shirts? The girls will fail school from seeing all those muscular arms those guys have .(or will have from being so "distracted" all the time)

according to the article there is no restriction on boys' choice of clothing...the main point this mother is making.

here in america people worry about "sharia law" encroaching, and the repressions of islam, but the reason for the burkha (apart from environmental conditions! which are valid) is the same as the one given here...men cannot be expected to control themselves, so women must do whatever is necessary to hide their "charms".

i tend to give men more credit than that, but this attitude is endemic in our society as well as in muslim countries. the girl who was raped while unconscious recently was less sympathized with than the boys who raped her, much protest was made about how heavy a mark being CONVICTED will leave on their lives...they were just boys "being boys"!

If we have no control where are we human in the end?
Maybe we should turn murder a "boys being boys" action too...
Also its too far beyond me to understand how the victim of rape can be accused of it

Im not afraid of saying this (especially since i live in a society that follows a similiar mindset) that people who supprt such degrading mindset are often people in poor and uneducated societies.

Well I agree 100% that trying to control what someone wears is wrong , however I think its high time that women start to realize and take ownership of their sexual power over men. It is true that women who wear provocative clothing are a distraction to men because we are visual creatures. However most of us are only going to harmlessly ogle and leave it that but the same thing that catches our attention also catches the attention of the sexual predators and they have far more sinister intentions. So women need to realize all this and take it into consideration. for the record im not saying women are responsible for being raped at all i'm just saying they need to realize that the way they choose to present themselves has the power to bring attention on themselves that they dont want, but that goes for everybody including men, albeit in different ways. In a perfect world we could all express ourselves the way we want at all times but we dont live in a perfect world . For example: I live in the south and like many southerners I like the rebel flag as a symbol. For the majority of us the rebel flag is simply a symbol of southern pride, We dont see it as a racist or hateful thing . However there are alot of people who take issue with the rebel flag and choose to see it in a negative light and those of us who are pro rebel flag have to tiptoe around these people and be careful of who we fly/wear it around. If we choose to wear shirts depicting the rebel flag we do so with knowledge that it has the potential to bring negative attention upon us.

Very true
But it must be left at that level only since it turns all controversial after that.

And woman can see too...men must be warned!

I guess I'm the Benito Mussolini of school uniforms eh. Put the boys in dress slacks and blue blazers and ties, and give them all military style hair cuts. Put the girls in blouses and knee length skirts with no make up and tied up hair. You go to school to study, and not for a fashion show. I had to even wear academic gowns. Learn and get good grades or your butt gets wh00ped. Kids today lack discipline and respect.

Being a part of "kids today" i would much rather overdose on pills than to live in a world where i have to repress my individuality just for someones convenience.

"You go to school to learn not for a fashion show"

IIRC that was a Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff line back in the day

My quibble with this ban is a part of School is learning to socialize, it's not as if they leave school grounds and no one is wearing those things.

and we are not talking about butt-high miniskirts or low-cut tops here, but pants. a boy in tight pants is just as distracting to girls as vice versa, but the girls are expected (and usually do) to manage to study just the same.

the mom who wrote the article makes the extremely valid point that OUTSIDE school these boys are presented with all manner of dress styles in females, and they need to learn to live alongside women without losing their brains!

this rationale that men are incapable of controlling their urges gives the "predators" an easy excuse, which is used time and again, even if the woman was NOT being particularly provocative.

as for the imperfect world, well of course it is, but it is reinforced by such attitudes in the formative years.

another story i saw was about a FIVE year old suspended from school for wearing a mohawk hair cut. just as dire, at least he got lucky with some extra time off school.

i have less problem with uniforms than with restrictive dress codes. at least uniforms have the benefits of a) not having to decide what to wear b) not needing so many clothes during a week c) focus is on the person not the clothes. but the accompanying denial of any individuality re self-image detracts from most of those benefits.

and don't even get me started on the junior high thing, one of the world's worst ideas when it comes to education...separate pubescent kids out from the rest of the world and stick them in a box with TENURED teachers who seem to think they are free to be morons for life...recipe for disaster.

kids need older and younger kids to help them adjust to the world at large at least as much as they need comatose teachers on power trips.

Excuse me, but I'd rather wear something closer to the boys dress code (except for the buzz cut). Why do you think that girls have to wear skirts or dresses anyway? They are a pain in the ass and uncomfortable and and restrictive. Especially for a young active girl. I can't remember the last time I wore one.

That's very outdated thinking to say the least.

It gets worse than that. Many years ago a VP (and a woman, who I can't help but imagine as Dolores Umbridge) who got fired (only after the community was up in arms, and there were even threats of violence by angry parents before they put her on paid leave) because she was doing panty checks (and lifting their skirts in full view of everyone, including the boys, even their dates!). I was actually shocked when conservatives at the time rose up in her defense, but a surprising number of them apparently don't mind police state schools or having a skirt lifted up in full view of the boys over that, but then I suppose if it involves humiliating girls just for being girls then that's alright, that's what they think schools should be doing in the first place.

There used to be a "zero tolerance, zero intelligence" site that detailed all kinds of nonsense, much of it like that. But it went down a few years ago.

In many schools jocks are pretty much allowed to torment others terribly to the point that their victims suicide, but that kind of terrorism (the kind that makes many feel literally sick at the idea of going to school, and at least some suicide, far more suicides attributed to bullying happen every year than due to things like violence at school itself) is considered a "rite of passage." Still, that's bullying, but could it ever justify murder as "boys will be boys"?

Actually, yes, and in California, too. I can list a handful of links if you're interested (but as it's a derailment I don't plan to go into detail here), a 15-year-old gay boy was murdered at school in front of class, shot once in the back of the head and then again as he lay on the ground in full view of all the kids in class. The murderer also had some Nazi paraphernalia, IIRC (I know that got contested somehow by his legal defense and I don't recall the details). Thing is the murderer got off on the gay panic defense with the help of a professional psychiatrist hired by the defense, accepted by a jury, and was cheered by some fundamentalist Taliban, er Christians, blaming the murder on the fact that the victim killed was allowed to be openly gay, and therefore "boys will be boys and kill the gays (as God commands, and let that be a lesson to all the kids who saw the gory remains of a sodomite, praise Jesus)."

So yeah, we could go there, too.

I've always been fond of that style (but I prefer it done with long hair), though I've never sported it myself as it was too much trouble at the time (and back when I was most likely to have done it I had short hair) and then later got to where it would mess me up socially. But I enjoy seeing it on others.

Great post.

I agree. I think it tends to look better with long hair too. But have seen it look great on med. or short hair as well.

Can't help but think about when I'd want to change it up - that in between stage when you are letting it grow out.....might look kind of awkward. lol

If one got creative enough, i'm sure there'd be way around it....i'm imagining ways it could still look great while growing out...

if one decided they didnt want to commit to it or got tired of the style after awhile. although i could see it being one that made for easier maintinence and for that reason alone want to stick with it for awhile..

There's a part of me that would love to have a full buzz cut so as not to have to deal with hair anymore.

Who said men cant resist their urges? I certainly didnt. But women need to realize the urges are there. And the sexuality of men and women are 2 completely different animals. The problem with this whole issue is most women arent happy with the results of wearing revealing clothing but insist on wearing them anyway. I cant even count all the women I have heard complain about getting checked out or approached out in public and what always strikes me about these women is they are usually (but not always) the ones wearing mini skirts and shirts that show lots of cleavage. The way I see it if a woman is comfortable with all that more power to her but if she has a problem with men being men( by this i mean admiring a womans physical beauty, trying to strike up a conversation etc) she should either realize that its in mens nature to be visual creatures or dress more modestly.

Can I enlighten you to the fact that women don't even have to be wearing revealing clothes to receive that exact same kind of treatment? Breasts tend to bulge and if there is a pair there, many men will take notice, even if you are wearing an oversized tee-shirt. Just the same as they would were you wearing a low cut v-neck tee (even a baggy one).

With many men will look at your chest or butt even if you are wearing a baggy t-shirt or pants, in the same kind of way they would if you were wearing something a little more revealing. Can't win with some of these guys.

As I've gotten older it bothers me less, but it's very helpful in telling me a lot about the man doing it.

Point noted, But suffice it to say we all know that provocative clothing will probably make it worse in most cases and certainly wont help matters.

Also note, that what is "provocative" to one, might not be to another. A woman might be dressing in a way she thinks is perfectly normal and comfortable to her and not trying to dress provocatively, yet some guys will think it is.

One man might think that that baggy V-neck is provocative when to most, it isnt. The V-neck might not even show any hint of her cleavage. Point is, certain men, will find provocativeness where there isnt any.

Why isnt showing leg, even if only below the knee, like many schoolgirl outfits (which we know in recent days are sexualized in music videos and elsewhere, and many men find them to be turn-ons now) not considered provocative by some school officials?

....or maybe it is.....?

Glad I don't have to dress in a knee length skirt to school or anywhere else. That would be very uncomfortable to me.

Especially after videos like that Brittany Spears one many years ago (i think it was her?) for example. Some men are too sexually aroused by the schoolgirl uniforms now.

And especially don't wear your hair in two braids in one of those outfits! It might be too much for some of them!! White knee-high socks would be over the top too! I know many men find that outfit to be very sexy.

So as a young girl, I would not want to have to dress that way. Too many sickos out there at this point.

& perhaps she is comfortable in her femininity and sexuality and doesnt feel like she has to cover her breasts up to keep the small minority of perverts at bay. As woman get older they learn to ignore these guys and walk on.

She might be more comfortable expressing herself through more girly, feminine styles or even sexy clothing and she has a right to do that. Choosing to do so does not give any man the right to harass her. Many intelligent, respectable woman are comfortable dressing in a way that shows off their femininity. That's their prerogative. Most of the woman that do, don't even look twice at the creepos at that point anyway. They just don't exist to them anymore and they have their sights set on real men who can handle themselves and are able to look past a woman's exterior or choice in dress.

The boys fall away at that point and women begin to connect with real men all the while being themselves and choosing to dress however they wish and being respected for it. Because some guys can see past an exterior. ....or want to. Their minds are more open.

So now all of a sudden men who ogle are creeps? because I'm fairly certain every straight man I have ever known ogles. Its amazing how much man bashing goes on on this forum yet sexism against men doesnt exist. But oh wait! I know this game... any hot man ogling is ok and any man caught ogling who the individual woman doesnt find attractive is automatically a creep.
