And back we go to mental S&M. Rather, this forum is like mutual mental masturbation for the socially awkward. The theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon pales in comparison.

No, disagree YTA, ones mental masturbation, which usually revolves around "look at me!!" or "this is perfect, anyone who does not believe that it is perfect is stoopid"

Rarely happens here

I like using the internet (obviously). Don't get me wrong, I believe it can be exceptionally useful as well as informative. I just think that we get kind of "sucked in" and don't realize how much we need the distractions in our lives.

Without them, well...we're left to watch people (as in the term "people watching"), sit quietly in nature, talk to each other, or be alone with our thoughts.

There's clearly a benefit to learning new things and interacting with others online to an extent, but I believe that it's very easy to overdo it and allow ourselves to become stripped of things that we actually do need as humans, or on a spiritual level.

I'm not suggesting that everyone who gets online goes overboard with it. But I know that I do. Even when I lived in the city, went out frequently, worked, etc. I was always either using my phone or a separate camera, or if I was at home I was on my computer.

I won't go so far as to say that most people I know are this way, but I do know a lot of people who are, and at least for me personally, it seems counterproductive.

I don't know how many here have seen the film Baraka, but it does kind of make me think of it.
There is actually no speaking involved in the film, so please ignore Obnoxious Guy's intro to it in this clip.
http://youtu.be/bbykhJ8aTz0

I mean, I'm not trying to imply that the internet is of the devil or something, I just think that it has a tendency to affect us in ways that we've become accustomed to but may not necessarily be beneficial to us on a deeper level.

Nice to see you, teasel!

I went through a long phase like that, when I first started interacting on message boards, over ten years ago. Christmas Eve, and I was online, rather than sitting with family - or just before Christmas Eve, 2001 or 2002. :/ I was too used to being alone at the time. I was just telling Mum that I felt better recently, because we were getting along, and had been spending time together. I got into a funk when things went back to the way they had been, and we weren't spending time together.

Yeah...I mean, I enjoy having people around, so it's not on my mind too much then, but I think I've always had a tendency to get sucked into spending way too much time online.

I spend quality time with my son and my family, and with my parents or other family members when they come to visit, but...I do spend too much time staring at this laptop screen, and that bugs me. I had a lot more fun today while limiting my time on this thing.

For me the internet is great because the possibilities are endless. Wanna watch farting preacher videos? You can do it. Wanna read about any topic under the sun? You can do it. Wanna watch fetish porn? You can do it. Wanna buy stuff? You can do it. Wanna interact with a person on the other side of the planet? You can do it.

Lately I only use my laptop for work and study. I post from my phone when I'm out. I'm very mentally hyperactive though. I could SMS, be on the phone and post stuff on LL at the same time - and I really like it. It relaxes me.
Must be my Gemini AC plus Mercury square Uranus. I need to be in a certain kind if mood to enjoy peace and quiet. It depends.. But often I like constant mental stimulation. It doesn't tire me.

Oh yeah, I love that aspect of the internet. I just think that if any person spends too much of their personal time on it, there's like...a REAL LIFE experience that they're missing.

I spend time with my family, work outside a lot, am physically active, generally live a reasonably happy life (we all have our issues, but I'll happily deal with mine and enjoy what I have)...but I just seriously feel as though spending too much time with this stuff detracts from that. Emphasis on the words "too much" there.

I already feel like I've spent too much time with it, just in the past 30 minutes.

I love the information at my fingertips but admit a lot of the social networking stuff leaves people kinda depressed and empty. There's a lot of angst driven people who are sad and depressed and people will push their buttons online. There are people who want to be with another in person, they see them online and feel empty when that person doesn't feel the same way about them.
I think it's just easier when you can go someplace and meet people without the internet. Internet can make meeting people a lot more difficult, ironically. There is such a thing as being too social. I think it can be a way of dividing people instead of bringing them together.
That's not saying it's altogether evil, it isn't. It's best to be discerning about it and figure out what is actually helpful and productive.

That doesn't sound so terrible to me.
What I find (and have found) is that I have a *very* difficult time simply being. I do not like to be alone with my own thoughts, unless I'm doing something spiritual in nature, or something outdoors. But to simply sit with my own thoughts is...difficult.

It's also very difficult for me to just be in the moment in almost any situation.

I think that's often why people use distractions, so that's probably the gist of my thread. Maybe. I'm not always sure what my point is. You guys just get to read my "thinking out loud" process and contribute your thoughts. Lucky you!

For the record I honestly don't feel depressed or empty as a result of Internet interaction.
I think people who didn't grow up with the Internet would feel differently about it.

Violets - hmmm I've heard of many people having a hard time simply being and there are many online articles about finding ways to unwind, distress and relax. Yoga is probably the most common one everyone seems to advise.

I'm not too fussed. Maybe it's because of my Neptunian energy.. I feel like I already meditate and phase out occasionally lol
But I would like maybe take up yoga eventually!
