But I would like maybe take up yoga eventually!

Yeah! I've considered yoga, but I don't know about you (I know that we both have Mars in Cap, right?) my Mars wants karate! I do love martial arts, and it does help focus and center me in a way. Tai Chi was kind of helpful for me as well. But I might just try yoga one day. I do the stretches, but when I meditate it's for spiritually oriented things, not to simply just "be".

But my...erm...step-mother in-law (long title, that) goes on like week-long retreats where they don't speak, and my father in-law builds sweat lodges and things like that. I don't feel the need to be too extreme, but I would like to be somewhere in the middle with my own personal quietude.

This may have something to do with it.

No, scratch some of that^
I used to be able to just "be" when I was younger, and I didn't feel the need to be distracted. I think it's a learned thing for me.

I think that, for some reason watching that short documentary just...made me realize that we really do need to be in the real world, and be *present* within that world in order to feel connected or grounded.
I don't think that using the internet inherently detracts from that, but I think there's a fine line to be crossed for a lot of people.

I don't feel horribly disconnected from my physical reality or other people, but I have blockages to being in the moment more often than not. I think that in situations like that, the internet and television are very easy distractions, which I think in turn robs us on a few levels.

When I was used to being alone, I was agoraphobic, my sister was spending months at a time in Canada, and my parents were working, sometimes until 10pm. So it ended up being weird for me to have company.

In November, I went out to make deliveries with my Dad. He picked me up in the afternoon, after one van had broken down, and he got a towed home, and told me to be ready, we'd be taking the second van out. I felt like I had the start of a cold, took my coconut oil and went out with him, and I felt *wonderful* later on - really grounded. I'd walked outside to check on the kittens, and felt so calm and happy - the opposite of what I'd felt earlier on.

It's also very difficult for me to just be in the moment in almost any situation.

I think that's often why people use distractions, so that's probably the gist of my thread. Maybe. I'm not always sure what my point is. You guys just get to read my "thinking out loud" process and contribute your thoughts. Lucky you!

Me, too. I used to know how to "just be." reading, drawing, painting.

I've avoided yoga, for the most part, because people talked about it making them cry. I also preferred aerobics and weight work, or walking outside.

I do like walking outside. But I find that it's still difficult for me to quiet my thoughts and just enjoy what's around me for what it is.

We have a large, wooded back yard, and it's much easier for me to do that there. If we move I'll be sad. Sort of. I'll definitely miss my yard and my garden.

Actually - and I promise I'll shut up in a minute - that has been my focus for a few years: to quiet my mind, and my life. To learn to just relax again. My mind is too scattered now, and I've had my share of drama through the internet, too.

It seems like many people do from all walks of life. What they really want is to go be with people in person. People who use social networking as a tool to do this seem to have the best results. The ones who use it to isolate themselves seem the most depressed.

Oh, I missed this. Sorry, Ellen.

I actually prefer cable to trying to watch most things with Roku - I'm feeling silly for getting it now ($70 on something for the TV, but I am loving Netflix - too much. Just like the internet, in the past.

Julia Cameron in the Artist's Way, has students take a week off from reading, or watching TV - that would now include no blog reading, and most likely forums, too. It's supposed to leave time to actually do something creative. I used to be very creative, and productive. Although I do appreciate having the internet here - I wouldn't want to be without it completely, and I've never made it through a week with no reading.

Well, I got the DVD plan, so it was a thing with my kids, we would each have our pick.

I saw some really good movies, "Roadie" (Blue Oyster Colt) "Still Crazy" lots of good stuff that I couldn't find in a local store.

Gosh, me and my girls LOVED the "Daria" collections...

Speaking of watching stuff, I was going to ask you if you watch Destination Truth? I first heard about the forest mentioned in the first link I posted from that show. It was really good (if you like those types of shows).

I haven't seen that one but I have watched Adventurers. I'll have to check it out. Are the episodes on Netflix?

Thing is, I stream it through the Wii, but I have thought about the dvd plan. Right now I get the $8 a month stream only. I doubt I would use it enough to make it worth it. Maybe I should just stick with streaming.
Haha, Daria is funny. Now I am thinking about turning on my wii and flipping through the Netflix selections.

Yeah, I guess that all four seasons are available to stream from Netflix now.

Well, I guess to tell the truth, I decided a long time ago that media was not for me. Simply because I liked to have something to show for my hours at the end of the day.

So I spent my time Spinning, Embroidering, Quilting; things that produced results.

But then I found LindaLand...

Thanks for telling me. I can't always decide what to watch. This sounds interesting. I just saw the new Paranormal movie last night. Wasn't too impressed with it.

I love what you do with your time.

I generally dislike media, in the broader sense of the term. I mute commercials or try to watch the few shows I like to watch in places where there aren't any commercials.

I do find that it's inundating. The internet just seems so...harmless. But it does create too much chatter for me, personally.

We try to live simply, as close to the earth as we can, because that's just what we've chosen to do with our lives. We weren't always that way, of course. And we could do considerably more to be more spiritually healthy, but...you know. Coffee, sugar, television, internet...whatever it is, my husband and I could definitely stand to do less of a lot of things.

I'm taking my allotted internet break right now, haha. We watched some PBS cartoons this morning, and now we're listening to Hindu mantras (we listen to music on our computer, but I have the screen turned off).

Another interesting thing I've been looking at is in a book that I occasionally pick up and look through called "The Hidden Messages in Water" by Masaru Emoto.

They take distilled water, or untreated water from natural springs, and play music, say things, or even simply show pictures to the water. The crystals that form when the water is frozen are pretty amazing.

The results from placing the water next to a computer, television, or cell phone distorted the crystals tremendously. I mean, we all know that those things aren't particularly good for our bodies, but I just tend to think that it goes a bit deeper even than that.

I like using the internet and watching some TV shows. I just think that it can be damaging on some levels if we aren't very careful about how much time we spend on it, or like anything else...what are our reasons for engaging in it in the first place?

I mean, we're not going to go completely off the grid or anything, but I think we're leaning in that general direction. Again, with moderation. (Well, best case scenario, ha.)

So...I don't want anyone reading this to think that I'm trying to say that the internet is a bad thing (because that's not what I think). It's just sort of like anything else, I suppose. But more innocuous within our society, to my way of thinking.

I like shows like Destination Truth and The Dead Files because they appear to be real-life experiences the people are having, and there isn't any drama in those shows between the people involved. Destination Truth is good for me because they have a sense of humor, and they go to some really fascinating places. They appear genuine to me, which I like.

Best to be in the moment, and not distracted...especially if you're this guy:
http://news.msn.com/crime-justice/iowa-man-arrested-after-fight-over-pbandj-sandwiches

quote:
Davis' accuser told police he was angry because he believed his brother was eating too many peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Davis allegedly made three sandwiches and ate them in their living room, and made another less than an hour later.

A police report says the brothers began to argue about laziness and overeating. Davis allegedly pulled out a folding knife and held it his brother's face.

Heh, can you imagine what he'd be like on the internet? (OTOH, he might've gained some perspective if he griped about his brother OL and people told him to calm down and be glad he didn't have bigger problems.)

I share this in my gallows humor but I am reminded that real life interaction can be just as distracting as anything OL. Arguably anything and everything is a distraction from something else. If I were to remove all distractions from myself then I'd become a hermit in nature away from people...but then I'd have to figure out how to eat and all (not to say I couldn't do it but it would have to be carefully considered). Though to do that would mean abandoning people I love (and love me) and I could easily miss funerals of those dear to me so even that would come at a price of disconnection, too.

I've met some really wonderful people, thanks to the internet. Pixie, I agree with you, I need time away from people in person, too - or you can have trouble anywhere. I heard about a Christmas Eve stabbing, one in which sisters were fighting. We didn't have that much craziness at home in the past, though - not for years. We used to enjoy time together, and still do, when things are calmer.

I'm actually scared stiff of losing my parents. My sister - I don't know what to do there anymore, but for the past so many years, I've been trying to do more with them, to make up for lost time when I was agoraphobic. Life can be cruel that way, stepping in in certain ways, to screw things up, but that's for another thread.

And thanks Randall. Some days are still bad, I'm worried about certain things, but we had more stability here over the past two weeks, and just the three of us.
