Ever since i was a lil girl, in elementary school, i was a Susan Butcher fan. When i thought of Susan Butcher i thought of her long brown braids. She was famous for her braids. I think many people have the same thoughts when thinking of her. I was looking around on her website yesterday and found pictures of her since having the chemo theraphy and radiation treatments ... and her braids were gone. (which didnt surprise me, except that she looked totally diffrent. But still Susan Butcher to me. It's interesting to note that, for those that are unfamiliar with the iditarod, it began as a rescue mission to get supplies and vaccinations to the rural villages of Alaska, delivered by sled dogs. And now here we are pulling for one of our own Mushers. Susan received her stem cell transplant early this morning around 1 am ... here's the updates, via her husband. news updates 17-May-06 01:56 AM - David : Susan's stem cells landed at Seattle airport at 9:30 PM. They had traveled with a courier from somewhere in the US. They did not have to go through security. They were recognized as life savers. They traveled by car or cab to the Fred Hutch Research center to be evaluated and prepared for susan. They are living in a safe environment but also one that will kill them if they do not find a new home. Susan will provide that home. Sometime tonight they will come here looking for that new home. It has been prepared for them. Cleaned out from the last residents yet still cozy and safe. They will start new familys there that will proliferate and fill Susan's marrow. They will send send their children out to bring oxygen to Susan's body. The children will bring her food. They will fix her if she is injured or sick. Finally when they mature will defend her against any of the leukemia that may lurk in some recess of her body. It is a gift but these new residents must learn the neighborhood. They must learn who is a friend and who is not....... ALERT: THE STEM CELLS ARRIVED .. AT 12: 35 AM. The bag they are in is small. About the size of your hand. The liquid inside is watery. It is redish pink color with a hint of orange. 349 millileter's. millions of cells. The nurse who brings them is cheerful. She lets us hold the bag. It gives real meaning to the phrase holding ones life in your hands. Untill they are in, one drop, one fall, one puncture and it would all be over. She goes away to get another nurse to help with the infusion. It is quiet on the ward. No activity except the rythmic sound of the IV pump and the hepafiltered air being blown into the room. They return and hang the bag from the pole next to Susan's bed. The nurse attaches the tubing to Susan's central line. She pushes the button on the pump. The fluid starts to flow and at 1:08 PM May 17th Susan's second life begins, her second chance, her do over. You can see if you look close enough the different colors of the liquid slowly making their way down the tube sending the new cells on the journey to their new home. Tears ran down my face reading this ... but a warm fuzzy feeling ran over me toward the end ... i think everythings gonna be alright. Thanks Liza and Aqua!!! Everyone else, please keep this Champion in your hearts and in your thoughts. Ang~ IP: Logged |

Susan's leukemia has returned. They gave her the choice of going home or starting over and she's decided to continue to fight the cancer. So she will need another bone marrow transplant. Please send this strong, admirable woman some healing light. IP: Logged |
