YFIS...there are a TON of these songs that are still my favorites! (I won't tell if you won't!)

I have lots of the old stuff on my ipod to motivate my lazy arse to work out!

I wanted to make honorable mention of Joy Division, although they sadly didn't make it into the 80's, they were definitely pioneers of alternative music.

Here's a Cure cover of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" by Joy Division

If you love Joy Division you need to watch the movie CONTROL. The lyrics will mean a little more when you see what inspired Ian Curtis to write certain songs.
The band did survive through or at least into the 80's after his death only the name was New Order, right?

YFIS...

How do you know SO much about EVERYTHING! I'm beginning to think you're otherworldly (in the best sense)!

I SO have to get that movie!

Yep...New Order came out of Joy Division. I think someone posted some of thier songs. Loved them too...music was much different than Joy Division, I think.

I thought Ian died in 1980? Not sure.

Thanks for the info...again!

quote:
What about "Condemnation" and "Reach Out and Touch Me," AG?

    Condemnation

    Condemnation
    Tried
    Here on the stand
With the book in my hand
    And truth on my side

    Accusations
    Lies
    Hand me my sentence
    Ill show no repentance
    Ill suffer with pride

    If for honesty
    You want apologies
    I dont sympathize
    If for kindness
    You substitute blindness
    Please open your eyes

    Condemnation
    Why
    Because my duty
    Was always to beauty
    And that was my crime

    Feel elation
    High
To know I can trust this
    Fix of injustice
    Time after time

    If you see purity
    As immaturity
    Well its no surprise
    If for kindness
    You substitute blindness
    Please open your eyes

Sag, of course.

quote:
Reach Out and Touch Me

You mean, "Reach out and touch faith" (Personal Jesus)?

Hmmm...who has the gall to think they can save you? Has to be a water sign, right?

I think Jesus was actually a Pisces, but the song kinda sounds more like a Scorpio.

Do you relate to Condemnation yourself? Sadly, I don't get to study Pisces much. Most of what I know of them is from being here at LL.

A little 80's controversy:

Under Pressure/David Bowie & Queen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdaHCLlBkWU

Ice Ice Baby/Vanilla Ice: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxN_pbMOFk0&feature=related

I believe that Vanilla Ice said he didn't copy Bowie's song because he had 1 extra beat in his song!

In The Air Tonight/Phil Collins: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gz7gajAb2ww

Rumor was it was to his wife's murderer...believe that turned out to be an urban legend!

AG,

I just liked those 2 DM songs and noticed you hadn't listed them. I do love the lyrics to Condemnation and also relate to them in the way that I don't believe in an establishment/power telling me to lie or compromise truth.

See ya in purgatory for leaving out U2, AG!

Then again...I guess since I have the power to let us both out, I'll go ahead and off into the air... You, however, need to do 300 "Hail Bonos" before you're exempt!

The filmmaker, Anton Corbijn, didn't he film a bunch of Depeche Mode videos? Nevermind, I looked it up. Yes, he did. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anton_Corbijn

The movie looks interesting. Will have to check that out.

My computer keeps freezing up on me, but quite a few that I remember have already been posted. Sorry if I missed something and repeated it.

The Smiths ~ How Soon Is Now?
and Girlfriend in a Coma

Duran Duran ~ Hungry Like a Wolf and The Reflex

Queen ~ Radio Gaga (and so many more ~ they were one of my favourites).

Nik Kershaw ~ Wouldn't It Be Good, I Won't Let The Sun Go Down On Me, and The Riddle
(I don't know how well-known he was over here, but for a little while, he was all over the place in England).

Kim Wilde ~ Kids in America

Tina Turner ~ We Don't Need Another Hero and What's Love Got To Do With It

Cyndi Lauper ~ Girls Just Want to Have Fun

(I'm glad somebody else mentioned Madness ~ hardly anyone mentions them when this topic comes up).

Howard Jones ~ Everlasting Love and What Is Love

Echo & The Bunnymen's Cover of People Are Strange:

Genesis ~ Land of Confusion

Ultravox ~ Vienna

Travelling Wilburys - Handle Me With Care

I thought I Don't Like Mondays was from the very early 80's, but it was 1979.

The Eurythmics ~ Sweet Dreams

Oh, and just one more. Holding Back the Years, by Simply Red.

(Hopefully I haven't killed this thread.. I didn't mean to post this many links when I first opened the "reply" window).

You just get on a roll, don't you?

Madness is great.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned:

Spandau Ballet - True

I personally couldn't stand the band, but my older sister liked them.

Oh, I just thought of another, Hall and Oates. I don't think I've seen them mentioned.
