"You are going to give me a six year prison sentence."____OK... Because the judge did not want to contradict himself, he had to set the man free. Giving any prison sentence after the man's statement would result in the judge losing face, for being a liar by contradicting himself. So being an honest judge, and wanting to save face, he had to let him go. Well it made sense to me.... IP: Logged |

Well I guess we are waiting on word if we got it or not! I had a couple ideas but kept falling back to that answer. The judge appeared to be playing a doublespeak head game but got caught in his own trap. IP: Logged |

You are very correct, Moonie So it was a correct weird idea. LOL Actually you guys have very logical minds and an awesome ability to solve problems. Kudos to you all!!! The answer is: A man was to be sentenced, and the judge told him, "You may make a statement. If it is true, I'll sentence you to four years in prison. If it is false, I'll sentence you to six years in prison." After the man made his statement, the judge decided to let him go free. What did the man say? Answer: He said, "You'll sentence me to six years in prison." If it was true, then the judge would have to make it false by sentencing him to four years. If it was false, then he would have to give him six years, which would make it true. Rather than contradict his own word, the judge set the man free. Hey!! This is backfiring. LOL I was the one who was challenging you guys but it seems that I am the one being challenged to find a riddle that actually can stump you geniuses. Maybe math will work as a stumper although I doubt it. hee hee You have a barrel of oil, and you need to measure out just one gallon. How do you do this if you only have a three-gallon container and a five-gallon container?

That is easy Mirandee, I can answer it even before I read the question completely.Fill the 3 gallon container with oil and pour it completely into the 5 gallon container. Again fill the 3 gallon container and fill the 5 gallon container till it is filled up to the brink. What remains in the 3 gallon container will be 1 gallon. IP: Logged |

Fill the smaller container with oil and pour it into the larger container. Then fill the smaller container again and use it to fill the larger container the rest of the way. Just one gallon will now be left in the smaller container. Edited to add: *Yikes! You posted quicker than I, LOL

That's right, Moonie. The answer: Fill the 3-gallon container with oil and pour it into the 5-gallon container. Then fill the 3-gallon container again and use it to fill the 5-gallon container the rest of the way. One gallon will be left in the 3-gallon container. Don't make me have to get tough on you guys. LOL The Stumpee's are not supposed to Stump the Stumper. I have an ace in the hole. A riddle created by Einstein. But will try some more before I get desparate and call in the big gun. What English word retains the same pronunciation, even after you take away four of its five letters?

QueueIt works, but is it really an English word? Or French? quote: queue Look up queue at Dictionary.com 15c., "tail of a beast" (heraldic term), from Fr. queue "a tail," from O.Fr. cue "tail," from L. coda (dialectal variant of cauda) "tail," of unknown origin. The M.E. metaphoric extension to "line of dancers" led to extended sense of "line of people, etc." (1837). Also used 18c. in sense of "braid of hair" (first attested 1748). The verb meaning "to stand in a line" is recorded from 1927 (implied in queuing). Churchill is said to have coined Queuetopia (1950), to describe Britain under Labour or Socialist rule.

It's used in English. In England, this is the most common use:2. a file or line, esp. of people waiting their turn.

Ohhhh... I see. Had to be a letter. 'Q' is the most logical since it requires two additional letters just to be used in a word, although my mind was racing through the "eigh" and "ough" words. IP: Logged |

Me too! And I thought it might be a trick question because I thought it was actually a French not an English word! So I was wracking my brain on what else it could be. But it had to be sound like Q, so it meant Q had to be it because none of the other letters have a Q sound. Heh heh..overthought it, when it was obvious!

Very good, AG & Lexx. That's the answer - Queue Now try this one on. There is a common English word that is nine letters long. Each time you remove a letter from it, it still remains an English word - from nine letters right down to a single letter. What is the original word, and what are the words that it becomes after removing one letter at a time?

Edit..Ok..I had some more but they were stupid ones, based on plural words. _____________ Startling is the best answer because it is singular. I wonder if there are any more "singular" ones? IP: Logged |

LOL You got it, YFIS. Startling was the word and broke down just as you showed it. Is there no stopping you people? LMAO It's becoming a lot of fun for me just trying to find one that does stump you guys. If that is at all possible. Okay here is another one: Four jolly men sat down to play, And played all night till break of day. They played for cash and not for fun, With a separate score for every one. When it came time to square accounts, they all had made quite fair amounts. Now, not one has lost and all have gained - Tell me now, this can you explain?

OK.. it said nothing about WHAT they were playing. It certainly did not seem to poker or another game, since cards were not mentioned. So reading through it I came up with: 1.they all made money. 2.they all were sitting 3.they all had different "scores", not "got" scores. 4. The only other things I could jive with playing and score.. was music. So they must be musicians. 5.But they were sitting! 6.So it couldn't be rock. 7.So they were in an orchestra or a quartet being there were 4 men. 8.The part that confused me though is why would they play all night? 9. Maybe they were at a fancy New Years Eve party or an all night Prom. ??????

YFIS I was still writing when you posted. You are FAST! How did you know it was dance and not a wedding reception or prom or fancy all night party? Did I miss a clue somewhere? edit to add: Or did I take "ALL" night too literal, and it meant all evening instead?
