Was there some kind of upset between you two that is causing a distance? (emotional as well) I feel your intuition is at a peek right now and that's why you are thinking of him. The knight of swords is showing events unfolding quickly so I feel you may be hearing from him and it could possibly cause a bit of confusion for you with your feelings.

Did you have very bad blood with this person, or are you two recently trying to rekindle a friendship?)I get that you don't completely trust this person due to a shady/shaky past, hence maybe possible procrastination/hangups, but try to put things into perspective and give R the benefit of the doubt(as hard as it is). Try your hardest to be optimistic in this situation should you sign up with R, and don't allow this person to put a damper on your enthusiasm(for example, if they start complaining, don't go "I knew this was a bad idea). Granted, being around this person won't be a walk in the park because they still have those tendencies?(Im getting sabotage, maybe issues with being condescending), but instead of letting R block your happiness, tempt you to react negatively, focus on how much you're growing from no longer allowing this person to dictate your emotions.

Hmm, strange. They feel like you somehow belong into the same world/ circle, like you are family/ home, feel very good with you, usualy, but the 5 of cups also shows there is sadness, melancholy and regret, like they have lost you or are missing you or your togetherness?
But they have not given up hope totally yet, but in stead look out for you, or a new development that witll tak your connection to a new stage, with enthusiasm and passion.
