I'm pretty similar. I just switch languages pretty often. As long as I'm not bored I can learn forever. My rising in Aries/Mars in Leo trine my Sun could also lend some energy. IP: Logged |

So you got 2. Maybe your 9th house ruler can tell you something. I have mine in 7th, which suggests I have or will have a significant relationship with a foreigner and it's true. Or check progressed planets. I had Sun progressed into Sagittarius but I already had too much to begin with. IP: Logged |

LOL! No, not that bad, but it is an awful sounding dialect, it always sounds like we're insulting everyone we talk to. Or at least that is what it sounds like to me ("What did you call me... Oh wait, it was a compliment, sorry.") And, in addition to that, Antwerp dialect does have the most imaginative curses and swears in existence! They always crack me up, even when someone hurls them at me We must have been a peace loving people back in the day, we Antwerpians, no wonder other Belgians don't like us ------------------ [Insert catchy signature here.] IP: Logged |

well good one, though i've been to Antwerp several times i didn't pay particular attention to the accent. i was too busy hatin' on the Dutch. mmm i wish i had some fries right now. with mayonnaise. though it's possible to get that here too. well, a friend once did say that German is the ugliest language though. and he said, "how can you call a butterfly SCHMETTERLING!?" but seriously, what the heck is "butter-fly" just as much! German IS weird though. IP: Logged |

Yeah, I heard it takes somewhere between 11 and 15 years for a Native English speaker to fully grasp their own language? The problem is that there are soooo many exceptions and multiple words mean the same thing and therefore everything becomes a semantics issue. On the positive side, it has a very wide range of vocabulary.

Dogs listen to the tone of voice, not the contents of what is being said. So if you're going to sound stern, of course he's going to submit! ------------------ [Insert catchy signature here.] IP: Logged |

Oh my god... Schmetterling? They never taught me that in school, I would have quit German after half a year instead of one year I had to quit anyway, every time I tried to pronounce "Vater", it sounded like I was talking about that man with the teapot over his head who had submitted to the dark side. I just couldn't manage to pronounce ANY German word correctly, no matter how hard my teacher tried to teach me! LOL! Oh, and there are more Dutch in Antwerp than Antwerpians, especially on the weekends In fact, if you walk around in the city, you're probably more likely to hear people speaking Holland Dutch, polite or simply another language. The inner city houses mostly students or businesspeople (they can afford the high expenses of living smack bang in the centre of this city), and just outside of the old city centre, it is mostly foreign people who speak either French or English, or their own native language. On the outskirts of THOSE outskirts, is where you'll start to find people who actually talk the way I described ------------------ [Insert catchy signature here.] IP: Logged |

Assieds or assieds-toi? He'll still listen Hey, if I can teach a ten year old dog a completely different language altogether, you sure can make minor adjustments to what you have already taught a dog. And: what I wrote above, dogs only listen to the tone of voice, not what is being said gestures help too, by the way! ------------------ [Insert catchy signature here.] IP: Logged |

Haha! Guys, GERMAN IS BEAUTIFUL! When I learned English I was shocked that Schmetterling is called 'butterfly'. Sounded really weird to me. But did you know that it both means 'insect that is attracted to butter'? It has the exact same meaning! Well, to answer the original question. I speak three languages and learned two ancient languages (Latin and ancient Greek). I love languages and plan on learning many more. I don't have any planets in the 7th or 9th house. I have three Virgo placement including Mercury. I also have my Mars in Gemini. Mercury is in the first. Mars in the 10th. My mother is also very linguistically gifted and she doesn't have any 7th or 9th house placement either. She has Mercury in Aquarius in the 12th house. My father speaks 7 languages fluently. He doesn't know his birthtime but he has 3 Virgo placements including Mercury (just like me). IP: Logged |

Butterfly: a fly that wouldn't let butter melt in its mouth In Dutch, butterfly is "vlinder". It somehow does add more to the mysticalness of a butterfly. Besides, I think you can call it whatever you like, if you're used to it being called such-and-such in one language I think you automatically give it a more positive connotation anyway because you associate it with the image (which is positive), even if what you call it (hypothetically) does translate to something like "urinal insect". Because after all, a fly itself is only named after the verb "to fly", but when we see one, we can only think about "god, imagine where that thing's legs and tongue have been! They sit in feces! Ewww!" Or at least I do. I don't want a fly near me

actually, i do quite like German. it has its weirdness too but i like it. my guy does tell me that i should focus on French because French is more widely spoken worldwide and German is not, but it doesn't have to be worldwide spoken to learn it, does it? and i'll be able to understand a little bit of written Dutch because of the similarities (at the moment my German is too lousy but i do feel more familiar to Dutch after i started learning German). beside i want to read this old Theodor Storm i picked out of the "give-away" box. i loved Storm as a teenager and i'd love to understand it written in the original language. i like "vlinder" though, whatever that means. i sounds cool. Vlinder just means butterfly I knew this girl once, she's from the UK and worked in Germany for a while and learned the language there. Then she came to Antwerp to work and she had absolutely no problem picking up Dutch after knowing German. There definitely are a lot of similarities but for some God-forsaken reason I just cannot manage to learn even the basic German I know a few basics though, but that's about it... ------------------ [Insert catchy signature here.] IP: Logged |

Haven't read all posters here but from memory pisces has a facility for picking up languages, it doesn't have to be the sun just someone with strong pisces influences. I know someone with 20% according to astro.com pisces influence so that is more than average if we go with 10 planets and they have a languages degree to a high standard (despite high school teachers saying negatives to put them off). So listen to your own advice first and then listen to others was the moral of that story. Also mercury strong should be good so mercury in a good house, with lots of aspects rather than a few and also mercury in gemini or virgo would be good, virgo would get the technicalities right and gemini would be good at fluency.

right... i think i told you before, but my guy once went into a small deli in a small town in Holland, and asked them "do-you-sell-anything-vegetarian?" in German with a Dutch accent. they did not understand, or perhaps understood but more likely probably offended. he came out defeated.
