“But I tell you who hear: love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who mistreat you. To him who strikes you on the cheek, offer also the other; and from him who takes away your cloak, don’t withhold your coat also. Give to everyone who asks you, and don’t ask him who takes away your goods to give them back again. As you would like people to do to you, do exactly so to them. If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. If you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive back as much. But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing back; and your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High; for he is kind toward the unthankful and evil. Therefore be merciful, even as your Father is also merciful. Don’t judge, and you won’t be judged. Don’t condemn, and you won’t be condemned. Set free, and you will be set free." The concept of forgiveness predates Christianity by thousands of years, maybe even 30,000 years ago or much much longer ago. For starters this article gives a fairly good overview. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forgiveness The concept of forgiveness most likely began when the human race was still "in the caves" so to speak. I feel that even the Neanderthals and other evolutionary offshoots of Cro-magnon understood the concept also because some practiced caring death rituals for deceased members of their family/clans/group. To my thinking, such actions indicate a sapient thought and action process and therefore the ability to most likely grasp and practice the act and concept of forgiveness. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cro-Magnon A book I hope to acquire once it is published! http://www.amazon.co.uk/Before-Forgiveness-Origins -Moral-Idea/dp/0521199409/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1269134360&sr=1-1 Forgiveness quotes: quote: There is no revenge so complete as forgiveness. -- Josh BillingsLife appears to me too short to be spent in nursing animosity or registering wrongs. -- Charlotte Bronte Forgo your anger for a moment and save yourself a hundred days of trouble. -- Chinese proverb "The man who opts for revenge should dig two graves." -- Chinese proverb When anger rises, think of the consequences. -- Confucius "An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind." -- Mohandas K. Gandhi The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong. -- Mohandas K. Gandhi "Forgiveness does not overlook the deed. It rises above it." -- Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela Perpetrators who receive the gift of forgiveness are given a chance to change -- Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela an act of forgiveness sets the victim apart from the perpetrator, who failed to act humanly towards the victim at the time he committed his crime. -- Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela For perpetrators, when they apologize and experience remorse, it gives them a chance to reclaim their own humanity. Some rise to the moral challenge. Others of course don't care, and they continue acting with contempt. -- Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela "Before we can forgive one another, we have to understand one another." -- Emma Goldman Our capacity to make peace with another person and with the world depends very much on our capacity to make peace with ourselves. -- Thich Nhat Hanh The practice of peace and reconciliation is one of the most vital and artistic of human actions.” -- Thich Nhat Hanh To reconcile conflicting parties, we must have the ability to understand the suffering of both sides. -- Thich Nhat Hanh "Forgiveness does not equal forgetting. It is about healing the memory of the harm, not erasing it." -- Ken Hart We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies. -- Martin Luther King, Jr "Forgiveness is primarily for our own sake, so that we no longer carry the burden of resentment. But to forgive does not mean we will allow injustice again." --Jack Kornfield Five enemies of peace inhabit with us - avarice, ambition, envy, anger, and pride; if these were to be banished, we should infallibly enjoy perpetual peace. -- Petrarch If we really want to love, we must learn how to forgive. -- Mother Teresa "It takes courage and commitment to act in a more forgiving fashion. It is not at all a sign of weakness but a mark of strength." -- Carl Thorensen "Let us forgive each other - only then will we live in peace” -- Leo Tolstoy Forgiveness is the fragrance the violet sheds on the heel that has crushed it. -- Mark Twain Love is an act of endless forgiveness. -- Peter Ustinov
