Glad that I was able to help my dad put my new Ottoman bed together. After his stroke he hasn't been able to coordinate his actions much, but having him help was definitely a moment that we shared and I'll treasure it.IP: Logged |

Sad day, today was the last day of teaching for me. But the experiences and lessons I have learned have made a profound impact on me. Seeing people grow and develop is an awesome thing, and it is great to know you had a part in this. It is hard to describe the impact you have on your students, because sometimes you will not even know until years later. What I love about teaching is how selfless it is, a great teacher is not one based on popularity, but rather one who demonstrates effort and preparation they put in towards communicating the lesson. My belief has always been give as much as you can, and if you get some back never take it for granted. The more people treat others as discardable objects, the more I go out of my way to help people. I refuse to be that selfish person who mistreats others for personal gain. If I have to spend extra time in the lab, create more resources for learning, grade longer for better feedback, and simply lend a listening ear I will. I will never turn down someone in need, and I refuse to be that authority who cannot be bothered to check their email, only cares about financial or personal gain, or puts minimal concern into the needs and interests of others. There's someone I've come to dread doing business with as she's so...high school (yet older than me). She means well, but there was a certain trait about her that was becoming intolerable so that as I was wracked by insomnia last night stressed over having to talk to her again I knew the time to bite the bullet and deal with it had come, and the only reason I hadn't yet is because others would have to suffer the likely consequences with me. But this morning I realized a teenager I'm close to (and one who would suffer with me if I acted in the wrong way) with an 11H Cancer sun and Libra moon deals wonderfully with high school kids with the very same quality, so I asked her advice and she instantly had an answer, one that would both solve my problem and help this other person feel better. I was amazed at how brilliant and simple it sounded...but also know the practice often works different than the theory so I held off on my excitement. It worked BEAUTIFULLY! This was win-win for both me and the person I was having a problem with. It's not the first time this high schooler has given me insight into dealing with sometimes complicated and unfortunate emotional situations among us adults that seem to have no way to deal with them in a way that doesn't leave someone hurt. I'm so grateful that I'm doing something special for her, but I'm not sure what yet. I wish I could share the details yet it would be terrible if I did and this other person I was having a problem with was a lurker here at LL. IP: Logged |
