A post about education...and we learnt about the godsend that watermelon with salt is... And NAMINAMI loved it!!!! hmmm wonder what salty foods it'd go with now? DL- new idea for you how about you just go and get a skill based 'education' in gastronomy to be specific...(but ignore me the watermelon(i have a lot of it at home this week for some reason) has taken over my thinking power....) Though seriously i think along with psychology think of what 'skill' think you want as it'll be something to fall back on at times.

Aww sorry to hear that I kind of want to go for accounting (I know I really like the business field though if I major in something else), was the company that you worked for really bad or the job tasks? Was there a good work/life balance? IP: Logged |

lol i didn't 'study' them in the official way...but something passed on, (though sadly i don't see it happen often these days and it's a shame), i know how to sew. Like if i see a shirt i like outside, i can just go get material and make it, and with all modesty but probably even better than what is in the shops. It also helps, when you don't want to think too much about how a lot of what is in the shops these days was made in a factory in a 3rd world country where buildings collapse on people, and suddenly after that they find someone to blame, but the truth it's the whole 'system' around the world that is to blame for letting such things carry on.... okay now off soapbox and onto other things, cooking, yeah me to i prefer eating...i also pay the piano (Who doesn't these days) but almost needed high blood pressure medication after being asked to teach a little cousin how to play it some years ago ummm....yeah that's all i can think of now. for you learn how you can fix computers if you like it, and your good to go. computers are like a vital organ for us these days, it's as if when they breakdown, the human behind them can't function that well anymore either!! other ideas, do you ride horses?

Hi Chiemi, not at all, if you like it totally go for it. The company was fine...AT TIMES.... this wasn't in Europe or the US, ad sometimes our boss would want us to approve things you shouldn't, and then it gets nasty with that "shall i do something wrong and keep my job...or shall i do the right thing and get fired, or have my life turned to hell if i stay?" otherwise it's fine, the accounting departments did do a lot of all the hard work, and basically they are the one's who know all the 'truth' about any company...the sad part is that in many places they don't got paid as much as people in the finance departments...but it won't be a surprise if i tell you i think the people in the finance department are the future politicians, of their countries, it's the only way to describe them lol. I didn't like it, as it was the wrong environment for me and my personality nothing else. But if you like accounting go for it...i also see you are in the US, and believe me if you go to a uni in your country and then get your CPA certificate (it's very important if you want to be able to work as an accountant in many places) then you will have more job offers than you know what to do with (pay is another story)....everyone everywhere needs accounting, thing is we are in a 'globalized' world these days, and for those who didn't experience the American tax system....it's all gibberish to us. A lot of the big companies and fortune 500 are US based, hence why they prefer to hire someone who knows how sensitive and risky it is to the business to have one slight error when it comes to financial information and how it impacts paying taxes. So basically....i say go for it!!! A career in accounting is great if you actually enjoy it and know that you enjoy it (hmmm remembering uni, the girls and boys who were just studying accounting on it's own, were extremely sweet people, and contrary to popular belief, not a single one of them was boring) okay i wrote too much, if you can make the wood for the trees from this post, good for you, if not ask again, and i'll answer more specifically IP: Logged |

I understand haha, I can def see how your ethics/morals can be tested with some companies. I've read about a few accounting firms who were once top dogs but ended up crumbling because of fraud and bad practices. I plan on doing a ton of research on the companies I apply to if I do pursue accounting (or any job where I'm working in a business). I don't want to be crazy rich or anything like that but I do want to be comfortable, so as long as I have a salary where all necessities are paid for and I have cash left for emergencies and trips/vacations sometimes.
I'm leaning towards changing my major to undecided though once I get to college. I think I need to explore a bit and see what really interests me and buckle down on that rather than pursue accounting since I have doubts about it. Thank you
Oh and do you know if the accountants at the place you worked at or in general had a good work/life balance? Were they always working or did they enjoy themselves outside of work too? IP: Logged |

LOL don't worry you can have a proper life/work balance if you want to even if you are a heart surgeon. Most were just like everyone else, came to work and went out of work at the same time...at days when deadlines had to be met, of course everyone works more than normal and everyone is stressed more than is normal...except the politicians of the future of course, coz they've managed to find someone else to do the work, and were to busy finding the right people to make it look like they and the 'team' where behind any notable accomplishments lol. Also not only accounting firms with the ethic thing...it happens everywhere...just being realistic. I am with you in that it is better to enter undecided, and that is when you'll know if you really like accounting, or if you found something else you didn't even think of that you actually love. just make sure you have made it so taht you enjoy the experience whatever you end up choosing, and worry about the world and ethics later (actually one of the courses for accounting is an ethics one so don't worry about it.....too bad they never had one for finance majors in my uni hehehe) another too tired to know what am typing day here sorry!!! HEEEEY!!! I love horses, they deserve a pool loool....ummm there was a Roman emperor who made one of his horses a senator(actually that didn't succeed so he made him a priest) but that poor guy was known to be insane so i'll stop there heheheh yep but whatever you do, back to education, get a degree, the university experience helps be a more well rounded person, but also have something to fall back on if the degree doesn't work out! there are people all over with a degree in one thing and a job with a totally different thing IP: Logged |

Of dubious value. And I have enough degrees to shake my head at. Enough that I'm embarrassed and leave them off my resume. IP: Logged |

Ultimately, it's job performance and experience that counts. It's also charisma and popularity with the boss, the latter of which you can't really control. Here is my meaningless list: - Bachelor of Arts in Economics - Master of Arts in Economics - Master of Business Administration in Finance and Accounting - Master of International Affairs in International Business - Fulbright Fellowship - Certified Financial Analyst None of the above got me anywhere. It got me my first job. I had to take it from there and make my most out of a career where only one in five make it past the first 10 years. Outside of first year law associates, I have never heard of anyone handing you a six figure paycheck simply because of degrees and schools. Having said that, the top performing second year Associates at Goldman Sachs easily pull past the 250Ks, but that's Goldman Sachs, where average partners are paid upwards of $5MM. If you think getting accepted by MIT for Engineering is difficult, that's nothing compared to trying to get the prized job at Goldman Sachs. I got tossed out in the interview process and went to a competitor. IP: Logged |
