What kind of law degree do you have?

(And do you still play violin?)

Don't have a law degree. It's a goal for the near future. Have not played violin in a long time.

My kid's Early Action (non-binding) and Early Decision (binding) college applications are being submitted in a couple of weeks and he'll get the decision by early January!

Then there's the regular admissions application process/circus.

I wish they had a course in clearing photocopiers/printers and binding books in college, because that's what pretty much any new college graduate would be doing for the first year in any law firm/bank/advertising firm.

I am in the careers industry and I work with senior executives from major companies (Sony, Nestle, Disney, Dell, Nike, etc.) and I would say that only about 30% of of my former clients hold degrees in their field. Another 10-20% hold degrees but in something unrelated. That leaves about half of the bunch without a degree at all.

I've been in this business for more than a decade, so I feel like I have a fair sample to review to make these statements.

in the field of business it is common (mom is a degree-less manager) but i think the proffessions that do require previous education (usually outside business and computers)

Write me on FB and tell me which school it is, Ian, if you don't want to say it here.

Well, I said he is applying. Doesn't mean that he'll be accepted where he applied Early Decision. So, nothing can be announced until he actually gets accepted. Keep in mind that the acceptance rate is 1 out of 15, to 1 out of 17. Kids with perfect grades, perfect essays and perfect lives routinely get rejected.

And he doesn't want the word to get out when it occurs, so I respect his wishes. Stuff like this causes kid anxiety and angst. Kids and even parents lose friendships over stuff like this. So, of all things, it won't be on FB until the senior year is almost over. You'll hear it here before you will see it on FB.

Should I get a Masters?

I'm in the finance industry and it seems like everywhere I go I see Masters.

Then again, I'm also contemplating between Finance or Economics.

Master's is the new Bachelor's. To compete nowadays, you pretty much have to.

A management position in stores that would have taken a person years to work up to, with a college education, you can walk into the position with no problem.

I wanted to be a career artist way back in the day, but I feel like that is something I can learn at my own time and pace and be okay with.

I basically want a degree because I want to strengthen the foundation I have to stand on in order to help others out. It is a bit of a prestige thing, I suppose, but I am pursuing a degree because I feel if I know the chassis of what I'm dealing with, I will be able to move more fluidly when working with another person.

You're never too old.

But the usefulness of the degree in advancing your career does depend on your age. By the time you reach the late 30s, the usefulness of a graduate degree in career advancement becomes dubious.

I am myself will attempt over the next couple of years to complete my PhD requirements in my 50s, purely for personal achievement and not for career reasons.

You can't be discriminated against in the US for age in employment. If anyone here is between 45 and 70 and are discriminated in employment matters, call me when I get my law degree.
