See the one in the back corner? The one that looks like more of a bad-arse than a little chick should? My youngest has named her "Sparkles"....she may be the least sparkly chick on the planet. ------------------ If I've included this sig, it's because I'm posting from a mobile device. On the very left, you have Sparkles (named by my youngest). Despite her visage, she's actually the sweetest.Next to her, you have Barbie. We call her that because she's the lightest of our chicks ("blond"), talks a lot, and is kind of dumb. The other two (the Welsummers) are either Thelma and Louise or Bonnie and Clyde - we have suspicions that one of them is a male. S/he's the most raucous (and peck-y) of the group and his/her feathers are coming in way more slowly than the others. IP: Logged |

Compared to the others in the animal kingdon, chickens mature fast and live a relatively short life span. They get it all in fast ------------------ Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it. ~Rumi~ IP: Logged |

ah, don`t worry yet about the peckish `saur being a male. The biddies need to establish a pecking order and bonnie can sound/hehave like clyde at the social order stage ------------------ Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it. ~Rumi~ IP: Logged |

They're about the size of mourning doves now (perhaps a hair bigger) and're getting prettier each day. You can't see it in this picture, but the Easter Eggers seem like they're getting some really handsome, golden neck feathers and the Welsummers' red is deepening and looks quite nice in the sun.IP: Logged |

I finally got the coop placed. Excuse the uneven stones. My husband said he'd fix them when he got back...that's as much as I'm doing right now. I dug out space for a wooden box we had made in the footprint of the coop (to secure the coop & give the foxes a bit more to dig). The girls checking out their new abode. IP: Logged |

See, I'm secretly hoping that one of our Welsummers is a roo. That way (after we build a bigger house and run) we can hatch some of the eggs. Welsummers and Easter Eggers apparently usually produce "Olive Eggers" - goofy looking chickens which produce dark green eggs. I want green eggs and ham IP: Logged |

Juni - Do your pullets become demanding little hens? We're going to build a mobile run for them (we have the materials, but my husband's travelling and he seems to be afraid that the saws-all will bounce and I'll manage to sever a femoral artery and bleed out in the driveway if I do it ), so I've been throwing them yard treats / greens in the mean time. Most mornings, I'll pick some clover (we have a ton) and put it in their run before letting them out of the coop. They didn't see it right away today, and one of my Welsummers ran to the end of the run and gave me a confused, almost hurt, "Bawk?" I walked back over and pointed to the mass of clover while saying, "Chick-chick-chick." They then all ran over and went at it like velociraptors attacking a sheep. IP: Logged |
