1) Feminists know that the patriarchy hurts men as well as women. 2) The media is just a reflection of our society.

Amowls - This is why I don't use the word "feminism". I don't want to spend time debating semantics or defending a *word* that has lost its meaning.. because of too many people playing chinese whispers with it over the years.I mean - if you ask the average Joe working down at the gas station.. his interpretation of this word will be sooooo waaaay off.. that it's impossible to even have a conversation. And it's not just men. Many women are likewise entirely confused about the meaning of 'feminism'. I'm not optimistic about -changing the world- in this regard. I'd rather use a different 'wrapping' to more or less the same package - and cut down on time, arguments, debates and confusion.... over silly things like "But if Mary gets to vote, why do I still have to take the rubbish out?" and so forth... I don't waste my time (Cappy influence lol) IP: Logged |

I think it's a shame that more people don't argue semantics. They might actually understand what they're saying and what's being said more often. IP: Logged |

Now.. I wouldn't say that... Now. I can appreciate what feminism has achieved. I wouldn't be able to study in my chosen area.. if it wasn't for feminism. I'd be out getting cooking and hairdressing classes. But all things must come to an end. IP: Logged |

dysfunctional - I'm sure there are people who do. I often witness such arguments. I am just not one of these people (on most occasions). I have zero air in my chart and I'm more about action than talk. Everyone has their own way of standing up for the things they believe in. IP: Logged |

Something that should be noted is that men can be feminists too! And feminists do not hate men, I wouldn't be dating one and care for men just equally as women. IP: Logged |

So happy to see people sticking up for feminism! quote: within psychoanalysis/psychology, there is the idea that women do in fact have powerful subconscious stuff going on that makes them more susceptible to rape. I don't think that the term "asking for it" is appropriate in the slightest and get annoyed by it. Many women will be attacked and not look remotely provocative....But; I also get annoyed by the fact that women aren't given information that can ultimately lead to empowerment which would reduce the possibility of rape.
I have to disagree with this. A woman could be lying in the street naked and unconscious and completely helpless. If a man rapes her, he is still a rapist. He's responsible for his own actions. All the information in the world that's given to women is meaningless if we do not also, as a society, tell men to NOT RAPE. I also think the idea that women can prevent their own rapes is a fallacy. It's something society makes up because it's too uncomfortable to think about men you know being rapists. Unfortunately, the reality is that rapists do blend easily into society. Statistically, a woman is most likely to be raped in a home, by someone she knows. The "stranger in a dark alley" rape is a in reality a very small proportion of rapes. I'm sorry if I sound strident. Contrary to the popular stereotype, as a feminist I do not hate men. Quite the opposite. I don't like the excuses that people make for rapists - "men can't help themselves," "men have urges" - because I think those excuses are insulting TO MEN. I know plenty of wonderful men who are perfectly capable of controlling themselves and would never dream of committing rape. It's insulting to the good men to pretend the bad men are "just being men." IP: Logged |

Yes, through the objectification of women, men regard it as ok to rape, because we are no longer considered equal but inferior, therefore disrespect is considered normal. IP: Logged |

I was congratulating vertiver's post, same as you...I thought I made that clear. Anemone is a moderator! I asked where the heck this person would moderate with that attitude. Do you really think I would mean vertiver or you? I meant anemone. I thought I made that clear. haha... have you even seen my stance on this thread? i would think it was obvious. I was high fiving. I mean, if rape is all about showing skin, why do women in Saudi Arabia/other countries where women are more covered get raped?Feminism is NOT sheer stupidity. Apparently, people STILL THINK THAT IT IS A RAPE VICTIMS FAULT FOR BEING RAPED. Women make less than men. Women do more work than men. I can repeat myself over and over. Without feminism women wouldn't have the right to vote. Women wouldn't be able to be CEOs. Women wouldn't be able to own property. I could go on and on. Just because we're almost there (equal) doesn't mean that the work is over. Feminism is not stupid. I wonder why Anemone is even a mod, they have less than 200 posts and are clearly ignorant. There is nothing to salute in AstrologicalMan's posts. None. Zip. He can't even back up his own claims. If you actually read anything he said, you wouldn't agree with him, unless you're full of "sheer stupidity." And Betty, I'll agree to disagree. Feminism, no matter how people have twisted it, means that you believe that women are equal to men and should be treated that way. Just like people have twisted the word socialism to mean NAZI or whatever, doesn't mean that actual socialism = Nazism. It just shows who's informed and who's not. http://therealf-word.tumblr.com/post/7019271795/lets-kick-it-off-with-some-defi nitions-shall-we IP: Logged |

S'ok. Just so we're all clear. I am a feminist. I take that word how it is meant- in it's purity. If someone has a problem with the connotations of the word, I don't know how to help them with that. It needs to be 'taken back' from how it's been twisted. Like many things in society. I am pro woman. My sons are pro woman. *how could they not be? My daughter is and will be pro woman. They are pro people. Pro humanity. Until there's equality in the genders, rather than the obvious differences that are meant to be 'different' not 'less'.....but as in equal....Until that time, there needs to be feminism. Then we can change it to 'humanism' across the board. IP: Logged |

This is also a great quote: quote: "It’s awesome that a movement of women supposedly hating men is complete and irrefutable proof that [women are] wrong, but all the woman-hating men are Great Men and great artists and cool, admired role models, like rappers or rock stars or all of those philosophers who thought women were inferior. Imaginary man-hating is condemned and yet real woman-hating is celebrated. Why shouldn’t I hate men? Clearly they hate me and that impacts my life daily."- I Blame the Patriarchy

quote: Originally posted by PlutoSquared: I was wondering if you have ever considered the possibility that you lack empathy for women? That there is something wrong with you.For example, you lack empathy for rape victims (seeing them as willing participants, rather than victims of crime)??? This is a pretty simple, solid question. If you can't answer it, fine. Just HAD to ask.
Just because that is the case, doesn't mean that I lack empathy. I feel bad for those girls. I wish that I could save them. IP: Logged |
