I'm a Cancer rising and I can't identify with it that much to be honest. I'm definitely a highly imaginative Pisces sun but also a detached, eccentric Mercury in Aqua square Uranus. Weirdly enough I can feel this placement in my chart the most, along with my Pluto square moon

I'd think if anything, even if our rising/chart ruler isn't having a good time or well aspected, or expressed, then at least our IC can be more dependable.

Who we are at our core, I'd wager, could be even more relevant than the rising. It also tells a lot of our true intentions.

Honestly, I don't believe that and I never have. The Sun is who we really our because it's our innate personality and ego. It's our purpose for existence. The moon is our soul and emotions, it helps our karmic path. The ASC is our that others have of us and that we have of ourselves. Our ASC adds color to our planets by giving us houses for them to reside in. But the actual energy of the planets can work on their own. The ASC/houses cannot work on its/their own. I do think the ASC is important but people misconstrue what it offers to us. It's not our personality, it's like our subterfuge I guess to describe it. It's like a shell that we put our planets into to help protect them and also define them uniquely. But on its own the ASC is not us by definition. It's just a house or a shell provided to us.

This isn't always true. My Scorpio Ascendant is a significant part of my identity and on a much deeper level than you claim the Ascendant can be. My Pluto in Scorpio is also opposite my Sun in Taurus, which I believe supports why my Scorpio Ascendant is a central part of my identity as much as my Sun is.

The ascendant is still tricky for me because it is in the same sign as my sun. I have trouble seeing it in other people as well.

Well you answered yourself. You have Pluto home in Scorpio also in 1st house or conjunct presumably. Of course your ASC would be more powerful in this case. But for most people it is not, because it is just a shell to provide us houses for our planet's energies to reside in. Planetary energies will always be more powerful because they are real, physical objects that laminate onto us. The ASC is an important essence to our existence, but it is a non-visible point in the sky nonetheless. It affects us only by its essence being embodied in us through houses, not by a physical lamination like the planets. It is important but wrongly interpreted in what it offers us.
