Anyone ever quit smoking for a long time (couple of years) and then suddenly got the urge to start again?------------------ quote: Remember, love can conquer the influences of the planets....It can even eliminate karma.

I quit for five years, married a smoker and started up again . Quit for 6 months, started again... So, yes, I sure have had my share of weakness especially by giving in.. I surely hope you can break through the desire and keep the butt kicked! ------------------ Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it. ~Rumi~ IP: Logged |

It's weird how it came back so unexpectedly. The craving is intense but for the sake of health reasons will have to resist the urge.------------------ quote: Remember, love can conquer the influences of the planets....It can even eliminate karma.

I smoke once in awhile. Maybe the last has been several months ago. Never said anything like I quit. I never was a resolute smoker tho. IP: Logged |

yes...oddly enough am going through that right now... haven't smoked for about three years... definitely a stress related thing for me...------------------ " Some define good as that which preserves, and evil as that which destroys; but destruction can be cleansing and purifying, for there is such a thing in both men and races as spiritual constipation, which comes from too much preservation of the status quo." To those who have quit smoking, what methods were the most effective for you? My boyfriend told me this past weekend that he is ready to make a real effort to quit. I am sooo proud of him. He's a Sun-Neptune person so I imagine it won't be all that easy for him What would you recommend? Gum? Patch? E-ciggies? Hypnosis?IP: Logged |

Gum, patches and all that are not effective with everyone.Going cold turkey might work if he can tough it out for the firs two weeks. Moods swings might occur. ------------------ quote: Remember, love can conquer the influences of the planets....It can even eliminate karma.

Yes. I really enjoy smoking but of course it's no good. I still have smoking associations to this day. LolIP: Logged |

AQ, you kind of have to psych yourself up for it. You have to give some thought to how hard it might be, and how you plan to cope, and commit to the idea of being a non-smoker. If your mind is right, then the smoking cessation products can help. If, on the other hand, you keep feeling like it's not that big of a deal, and you really don't have any compelling motivation, the cessation products won't work. I guess in summation it's really about being able to maintain a certain level of motivation. IP: Logged |

I quit 3 times already, for a few years. I started again 2 years ago and quit 3 months ago. I had cravings, one was actually this week when I was going through a very stressful moment at work. IP: Logged |

None of those worked for me. Only cold turkey works. My ex gave me this book that also helped a lot, not sure if I'm allowed to post it? IP: Logged |

You can recommend any books.------------------ "Never mentally imagine for another that which you would not want to experience for yourself, since the mental image you send out inevitably comes back to you." Rebecca Clark IP: Logged |

I've never smoked in my entire life, but the smell just drives me mad. My friend he swears if I ever do it , he will disown me (as if he does) lol and because of this, that refrains me from doing it--- but I've always had a huge urge. I just love the smell, the way it looks, the impression it gives off. I must be crazy in the head, because everyone else tells me its really bad for you. I have this horrible feeling that If I ever did smoke, I would become obsessive with it and It'd become a habit. Therefore I will stay friends with the friend who will disown me for as long as I can, lol Venus-neptune anyone? Just out of curiosity, what impression is that? I once asked different smokers what kind of image they thought smokers sent and got very different answers, from "tough cowboy" to "sophisticated, desirable model" (and many others). What's your image? And do you know how you came to associate this image with smoking? Bonus question: if you decided to start smoking, which brand would you prefer? (I understand if you don't know.) 2nd Bonus question: How old are you? (It doesn't have to be exact I'm more interested in what generation you belong to, what decade you came of age in, etc, and I understand if you prefer not to say.) IP: Logged |

I've seen people who only smoke when they drink alcohol or who only smoke when they socialize. Other than that, they don't bother. How do they get it right to stop just like that? If those are the only times they smoke, then why bother at all? ------------------ quote: Remember, love can conquer the influences of the planets....It can even eliminate karma.

I'm not sure exactly-- all I know is I idolize it. Perhaps I think its vogue. Dunno. I infer it may have stemmed from watching television.. quote: Originally posted by PixieJane: 2nd Bonus question: How old are you? (It doesn't have to be exact I'm more interested in what generation you belong to,

Thanks, DS! One thing I've observed is that most people who thought smoking was a good thing were generally a boomer at the very least (though this isn't always true). By the 90s smoking became more rebellious and less conformist (even a rite of passage once upon a time) given how anti-smoking society had gotten, especially in school. And generally speaking good guys don't smoke on TV or in the movies (when Wolverine came out and he had a cigar as it was just part of his character he never lit it, and there was still an uproar over it). So what TV shows or movies did you see? ("Classic movies" is an ok answer that needs no explanation.) Offhand the only 2 smokers who were cool that I can think of was Wolverine (in the X-Men movies, and even Xavier made it clear he only tolerated it and there was a limit to his tolerance) and Whistler from the Blade movies (and given how stressed, old and scraggly looking Whistler is I'm not sure anyone would've believed him a nonsmoker anyway). Vin Diesal played at least one character that did (not counting Disney he only plays antiheroes and villains, but I can see how he's still cool looking). I can't think of any TV shows in the 90s or after where the guys you were supposed to cheer for smoked, but then I skipped a lot of TV... Now if you think the villains look cool then I can think of plenty more examples there ("Cancer Man" of the X-Files being an extreme example, though even he had to be supernaturally cured of lung cancer once). I find how different brains process the world around them in different ways interesting so I hope you don't mind my asking. IP: Logged |

James bond doesn't smoke anymore. I know he had custom made cigs at dunhill since he's ancient. Then there were gold rings by the filter to show his rank as commander. IP: Logged |
