I so wanted to go into an exceedingly nerdy thing on borderline personality disorder citing all the contemporaries in the business.. particularly concerning the work of this female professor at Harvard who focuses more on borderline, but I'm tired and I need to pass out now in order to get to work!! To make it short, and no I haven't been able to read through it yet.. the diagnostic and statical manual is imbecilic. I'm surprised professionals put any faith in it and are so blind to it. Borderline is the most overdiagnosed diagnosis in my opinion. If you are going through an emotional upset and you come in to see a psychologist you are very likely to be diagnosed as this. I saw a psychologist and she literally tried to diagnose me in 15 minutes in a routine type way that made me feel she did that with -everyone-. I really really want to bash on psychologists here (sorry ami, I know you're a good therapist though), but I would need a lot of time to organize, and I just don't have the concentration currency now especially. I agree. Truth is, psychiatrists won't get paid from insurance companies unless that actually do have a diagnosis. Anyone can be diagnosed with BPD, in my opinion. This is probably why she was so quick to peg you. Also, I don't think Ami minds IP: Logged |

I agree, it's a very, very problematic diagnostic category. IP: Logged |

PlutoSquared, I think if we did not have a pharmeceutical-and-insurance-driven system that was quick to diagnose people in one 15-minute meeting, they could get BETTER help. The way it works now, the person is equated with the disorder.Instead, someone should get treatment that is very specific to her unique case...without labels. The psychotherapist and patient should, together, isolate the destructive BEHAVIOR or thought patterns or emotional patterns, and figure out a way to stop doing those things. Since BPD has a sky-high rate of comorbidity, the label isn't helpful for figuring out how to treat the patient anyway. Many healthy people will exhibit deranged behavior in abuse recovery, or in an abusive situation. I don't know, and have not read about, anyone with a BPD diagnosis who had not been a victim of abuse or rape. IP: Logged |

PlutoSquared, Cheshire Kat's comments on the Love and War thread about having a happy relationship after a mental illness diagnosis were very insightful...where's that thread? Also, a diagnosis doesn't necessarily mean anything. A lot of people are never in a position to get diagnosed, even though they exhibit the same behavior. As I said on another thread I think, I'm glad I've never been diagnosed with a mental illness, because I think a diagnosis like that would just make me feel despairing and ashamed...would make it harder, not easier, to get help. I do find it interesting to talk about which behaviors would be classified as symptoms of mental illness, which would be classified as abusive towards others, and why. I didn't mean to make this an unsafe place to talk about this stuff. I just don't like it when threads that raise those issues in a way that might help me or others get shut down. IP: Logged |

Where is that Love & War thread?!It had a lot of useful resources, I thought--those wheels showing the difference between a relationship based on power and control, versus a non-abusive relationship based on equality....Mochai's (Cheshire Kat's) insightful comments...but I can't find it to link to, for some reason... Lucia, I was wondering where that thread went also. I was trying to quote the abuse wheel.. very insightful stuff.------------------ “If malice or envy were tangible and had a shape, it would be the shape of a boomerang.” — Charley Reese IP: Logged |

Are they deleting other threads of yours, PlutoSquared? It's weird, there wasn't anything contentious or offensive in that thread, that I recall...and people took the trouble to post resources--like the equality vs. power and control wheels--that might be helpful. It seems very wrong to have just deleted it. What happened? IP: Logged |

Anytime a string disappears like that, look on the first page of the Forum. It glitched and went to a post time of the year 1920. I just now found it on page 7. I posted to bump it up to the top, but that made it go poof. I should have just locked it instead and posted a link to it for reference. Live and learn. Next time, I'll know what to do.
