Because we have a small yacht and, if it were just me, I would love to live on it! So I know where you're coming from.

For me and my husband, a slightly bigger boat, please. For our whole family we'd need over 50' to do serious cruising and live aboard for anything longer than a week.

We just take the boat out for daysails around the Chesapeake at this point, and my husband lives on it while he sails on his own.

My husband and I have been talking about that, too! Selling mostly everything and just taking off. It's just...

Really difficult with a bigger family. So for now, we're just dreaming.

Good luck to you, though!

Ha! I was thinking the same thing about myself, hehehe. I thought it was just my Leo Asc, but you're doing a better job of not talking *exclusively* about yourself, heh.

Sorry, people.

<Eta>
That's funny, Faith...
Mars is also transiting my 3rd, and loosely conjunct my natal Pluto as well!
Wink wink.

Oh hey, I just saw your post! I wonder why posts seem to be disappearing on me today...?

I'll watch it in a little while, gotta go out and plant some violas while it's not raining (which should last approximately 5-20 minutes, and then I'll expect another downpour).

Well, uh...
If you're still here (or Padre), I did plant my flowers (and got rained on, but oh well...par for the course in these parts).
And...
Dug up quite a few very large dandelions, and actually remembered to bring them in and wash them.
Now what?
Can I eat the roots raw, or do they have to be roasted or cooked?
Just wondering...

I think everyone must know how I feel about cooking by now.

Hey Padre,
Since I've already gone completely off topic anyway (well, sort of), how do you make vinegar with dandelions and field onions?

Can you use regular onions? I don't think we have any wild ones nearby (not that I've noticed, anyway). But we will have some in the garden, and if I don't thin them out, they come out quite small.

Anyway, if you've already posted in QC about it, can you link it for me?

Nevermind about the dandelion root question, I answered it for myself.

Sure, you *can* eat them raw. Eeeyikes. Maybe better to blend them up with something extremely sweet and make a smoothie, haha.

I love it!....when YOU talk. !

I just have this damn t-square: Gem Mars talks a lot, Sag Neptune yawns about it, and Pisces moon cringes and wants to be invisible.

As for dandelions, yes, do you make green smoothies, too? You could probably sneak a few into one with some other greens and the taste wouldn't be too...dandelioney. I think dandelions are less bitter than arugula, which is kinda nasty in smoothies.

Otherwise, I saute them. I don't know how to make the accent mark on saute.

@Ellyn,

Thanks!

Simple really, collect as many as you can, arbitrary number say 5 cups, loose cups of Dandelion flowers, and say three handfuls of field onions or say 8 regular onions

Place in blender, mix into as small of chunks as possible.

Add to fermentation vessel, add sugar, say two cups, or honey, or even brown sugar

Slow method let wild yeast land and start fermenting, faster method is to use brewers yeast, leave the container OPEN, do not seal it air tight, seal it to keep insects out

Basically gather, chop or grind, water, yeast, sugar, let rest and breathe.

Biology does the rest, good for pickling as well

@Ellyn,

Quick dandelion tip, when they flower, or the stems turn purple, the sugar has left the leafs, they are now very bitter

cut that with vinegar

See, it all works together in a great way

Um...don't know much about yeast, the types of containers that would be needed, or the size of field onions compared to the ones in our garden. Or pickling for that matter.

Gonna have to do some research, and ask my family. They've been pickling things for years, but I'm not sure if they know much about making homemade vinegar.

Gram grew up on a farm in the Ozarks, I often wish she were here to teach me.

Now I get it.

I guess I don't care enough whether people take me as a backwoods hick or not. Like, if they can't see how classy I am, drinking my moonshine or whatever, that's they're problem.

Man, I sound like such a redneck saying that...

I don't find the dandelion leaves to be particularly unpleasant. The roots, on the other hand. OMG. No. Gonna have to season that stuff or something.

I doubt my yogurt would ever set, lolling about on a boat. At least not where we are usually moored or anchoring.

Pfft. Whatever, I agree with you.

I'm the same way, in most respects. I've lived in a progressive city for many, many years, lived a life. Now my life is different, and I tend to return to my roots (no pun intended...we all know I loathe puns).

Sometimes I even listen to CCR with my son.
Proud Mary, baby.

I think I once cleaned them (though you never can get them 100% clean, they're too thin to scrub) roasted them, and made semi-dirty dandelion coffee out of them. Sounds like something I would do, but the memory is so dim...but I'm pretty sure I did it, and it was alright.

Still, I go for regular commercial dandelion coffee. I like it. I just don't make it because of that dirt problem with the regular roots. I like organic, biodynamic food but not to the point where the soil is a major ingredient.

Eh...I washed mine just now, and was able to just sort of scrub the first layer (the one with the dirt on it) off of the roots by hand, like an onion. But still, it was quite horrid raw.

How does it work as a coffee substitute, anyway? It doesn't have that pep to it like Chicory or Yerba Mate, does it?

If so, I'm making some dandelion coffee!

Ever sing "Bad Moon Rising" when you know the transiting moon is going to kick your butt? I sure do!

Well it was fun (over)talking with you all~ I'm hitting the sack...I mean, it's just straw ticking in a big rucksack thrown on the floor, that's where I'm headed.

j/k

I'm going to my real bed and will prolly see all you educated hillbillies again soon.

Oops but first, I want to answer:

I don't know how to describe it, it's just good (to me.) A little like Yerba Mate but no caffeine obviously. I buy Traditional Medicinals brand...you might want to try that before making your own, to see if you like it and it'll be worth the effort.

Or, chop, dry roast in a skillet, use about a tablespoon put cup of hot water, and see what happens

G'night for real.
