My synastry with a male friend of mine (I am a straight female) shows a number of so-called "strong attraction" aspects in both the geocentric and the heliocentric charts. However, while we have fantastic intellectual chemistry, I do not find him the least bit physically desirable. I can't speak for him, though the same might be true on his end. What in our charts- and other charts, more generally- might create this lack of desire despite so much "evidence" suggesting the opposite.

I don't know how to paste charts; I apologize.

Him: June 20, 1971 10:37 a.m. Washington, D.C.
Me: December 31, 1979 5:20 a.m. Washington, D.C.

Aspects noted that have been said to create attraction:

Geocentric:
1. My nodes conjunct/parallel his ASC-DSC line.
2. My Mars in his 1st house
3. His Venus exactly conjunct/parallel my DSC.
4. His Mars trine my Pluto
5. My Venus conjunct/parallel his Mars
6. My Moon conjunct his Venus
7. Juno conjunct Juno
8. His Venus parallel my Vertex
9. His Vertex parallel my ASC
10. My Venus parallel his IC

Heliocentric:
1. My Venus opposite his Pluto
2. My Mars conjunct his Juno, trine his Chiron.
3. His Venus conjunct/parallel my Chiron.
4. My Juno opposite his Mars.

This tells me that if astrology works, there must be something else pushing the physical buttons. Any thoughts?

This is intriguing. I'll run them. I suspect it's a lack of the 'right' house overlays.

A lot of us have been there; a synastry that's supposed to push all of the buttons but doesn't.

Would you believe that their Sun/Mercury sextile my Mercury from Aries is one of the most consistent synastry patterns in men I've been very attracted to (/mutual/ attraction, no less).

But it's true and it makes sense when you see that certain aspects of my natal give preference for that kind of energy. = Attraction.

Whereas someone's Mars on my Venus/Moon conj?
Boring as hell. Are the people with their Sun there particularly attractive to me? Nope.
The Mercury in my chart acts more like a Venus than my Venus, which because of how it's situated acts more like a Moon.

Neither of you falls in each other's love houses. You need some planets in your 1st (mostly Sag) and in Aries to feel attracted, while for him it's someone with planets in Aries and Leo.

However, I find it strange you say you feel no attraction at all with his Venus right on your Mars/Moon/Eros T/square and on your DSC.

I don't feel these aspects would necessarily generate attraction..I am reading a lot of parallel stuff but what about actual aspects between venus and mars, specifically Double whammys involving venus and mars? I feel venus and mars aspects are strangely overlooked and usually the lack of that can explain IMO why something doesn't take off and why one person is more interested than the other or unrequited attraction.

Well you said he's a friend of yours. If I may ask what is your friendship like?

Synastry won't make you find someone physically appealing if they're just not your type. It won't make you find someone physically attractive. If you do though then aspects will manifest differently.
Many family members share so called "sexual attraction aspect" in synastry and yet those aspects don't manifest this way.

A MARS-MOON-EROS T-Square? Interesting. In my partner's chart that acts as a very repressed pattern. Involves the 8H and 5H, too.

^ agree agree.

I was curious to see this from a progressed perspective. Well, I usually only look at it from the love/romance/sex department..

And I find it completely interesting that time-after-time when someone asks a question/starts a thread here ~about someone~ we find a very exact progressed aspect between the biggies (I don't even recall an exception now).

And yessirrr..

His progressed Sun opposite her natal Venus, applying within 1 degree!

which again underlines *THE* connection... (on its peak)

Hello All!

Thank you to everyone who has contributed so far. I appreciate all of the feedback. It's obviously more common to focus on the synastry of those we find attractive, and I thought it appropriate to find those cases that don't seem to fit. Having read every comment, I would now like to add Man #2 (May 3 1983 2:47 a.m. Gloucester, ENG), to whom I am VERY attracted.

Let me answer all questions- or comments- in order here. :)

Aubyanne, hello! Regarding house-related synastry, I am not convinced, after 15+ years of studying astrology, that the 1st/5th (or 7th/8th for some) houses are necessarily equally important for all individuals. I suspect this would be another case of identifying the most important houses in the natal charts first. For example, what of the house of the chart ruler or the DSC? What of the house ruling the sign of Mars? I only suggest the above to invite debate. :) How is your partner affected by the T-square BTW?

Lonake, hello! Thank you for including your own experience. :) You make a great case, again, for studying the natal chart FIRST before looking at synastry, and looking at patterns are especially important. Why does your Mercury function more as your Venus and your Venus more as your Moon. I'm trying to visualize this. :)

LeeLoo2014, hello! Regarding houses, please see my comments to Aubyanne.
Regarding my T-square, this is actually a Grand Cross involving my ASC and thus a closed system. It's my experience that angles can complete configurations on their own. :) No doubt this configuration (and the planets involved) is difficult to stimulate, however; you are right about that. LOL He is not unappealing as a man, per se, he simply doesn't "do it" for me. :)

hypatia238, hello! We do have a Venus conjunct Mars in terms of a traditional (non-declination) aspect as above. This is usually hit or miss with me, I've found, whether I am Venus or Mars. With Man #2 (see data above), I feel a very intense physical attraction, though we have no major Venus-Mars aspects other than a geocentric contra-parallel and a heliocentric sextile. :)

ueharaa, hello! He and I share a godmother, so we have known each other for years. We see each other rarely, living in different States, and communicate when we can. It's all very sporadic which suits us; we are both strongly Aquarian. :) I like that you differentiated between synastry and "having a type." It would be interesting to see if our "types" can be identified in our natal charts. Most would look at the 7th house (or planets therin) but, again, there is no doubt much more to it. Persona charts, for example. It would be interesting, too, to see the charts of incestuous couples. One would imagine the sexual bonds to be very strong indeed to overlook social mores.

libran_dream, hello! I'm afraid I don't know how to post charts; I'm sorry. If anyone else can do this for me, that would be wonderful. As to the Composite Chart, this chart, like the Davison (and the so-called Marks chart) have nothing to do with interaction between the two individuals. The first two (Comp, Dav) show us the relationship as a whole- how it might appear to others, for example. The Marks charts theoretically show us how each person interacts with the Davison. Consequently, one's desire for another wouldn't be shown in any of the above. :)

mir, hello! What an interesting thing to note! :) You say it "underlines THE connection?" How so?

Hi Sabrina79,

I did a massive thread all about how the physical attraction aspects all need to be 'activated' in synastry in order for them to function on a romantic level.

All of the so-called physical attraction aspects can function to two different levels. The platonic level, and the romantic level. Venus/Mars for instance is can be just about balancing assertiveness with diplomacy (think of what happens if we have an aspect like this with one of our grandparents!). Attraction would not come into it unless the aspect is activated to function on a romantic level... The houses, and sometimes the Vertex Axis come into play here.

The houses in our natal chart show the CONTEXT that someone will have in our life. If we are not able view someone in a romantic context is doesn't matter what synastry we have with them, the aspects are all likely to manifest on the platonic level. A person is able to take on a romantic context for us if they put planets in our 5th, 7th, or 8th houses, or strongly aspect the rulers of these houses. In some cases people with planets conjunct either end of the Vertex Axis also have this effect on us.

This is actually a huge topic. Here's some links to the threads that go into this topic in detail.

Lotis, what's your experience of a 5H/8H overlay? Especially when there are several personal points or romantic / sexual points there? To me, that seems as if it becomes very much activated in a non-platonic direction.

Hi again Subrina79,

I just read the last post by you. Yes, I always advocate studying house rulers for the 5th, 7th, and 8th houses. Also, you're right about the houses ruled by the signs of Venus and Mars. I've found this to be surprisingly accurate in attraction synastry. Here's a link to a thread on this from a while back.

Masculine/Feminine Ideals…. Secondary and primary…more detail http://www.linda-goodman.com/ubb/Forum24/HTML/211116.html

Secondary houses are also very illuminating. Especially the secondary 7th house when it comes to choosing a partner. This can show hidden parts of your taste that don't otherwise show with your original 7th house. The Vertex Axis and Juno are also pretty interesting. I've seen Juno's themes chart show up often in the partner's natal chart. None of prince Williams 'love houses' show a Capricorn influence. However, he has Juno in Capricorn, and his wife Kate is a Cap.

Our type is shown by a combination of the symbolism of our 5th, 7th, and 8th houses (plus their rulers), the Vertex Axis opposition (and any planets conjunct), Juno, and the influence of the gender planets by house, sign, and aspect (this also includes the house ruled by the sign of Venus or Mars).

Basically, there are several different ways that a person could be our 'type'. If a certain theme keeps repeating itself over and over though out all of these factors a distinct favoritism for a certain sign/theme in a partner may develop. In my case I love Sagittarius... Jupiter is in my 7th house, my Dsc ruler is in Sagittarus, Juno is in Sagittarius, and my Mars is in the 9th house. The Sag theme repeats throughout all these factors and therefore it becomes very important for me. I also quite like Aries. Aries is on my 5th house cusp, and my Mars is in Leo. The sign of my Mars rules the 5th house which leads me back to Aries again. My Sun (a gender planet), Juno, and Venus (partner significators) are all in the 1st house (the 'Aries' house). Again there is a theme in my attraction pattern indicating this.

Yeah, 5th/8th house stuff is very passionate, and can create a lot of attraction.

However, if the 7th house is missing in the connection, it's like we couldn't imagine marrying that person even if we really are attracted. The 7th house is the hook that gets us to choose a person as our designated significant other. The 7th house brings actual liking, affection, and warmth toward a person and not just 'passion'.

A person doesn't need to put planets in our 7th for this to happen, strong aspects to the 7th ruler, or a strong symbolism match in the natal chart of the partner to our 7th house themes, can work too. Sometimes the link is stronger to the secondary 7th house then to the primary one.

Interesting, Lotis. Thank you for clarifying. What do you consider to be '7th house themes'? How do you personally determine them?

I still have difficulty identifying secondary houses.

Hi Aubyanne,

About the secondary 7th house...

Do you have Virgo rising? Your secondary 7th house is the house traditionally associated with the sign on the Dsc. If you have a Pisces Dsc, the seconary 7th house is the 12th house. If it were Aries instead of Pisces on the Dsc, the 1st house would be your secondary 7th house. This house shows more detail about your taste in partners.

About the the symbolism/theme match thing...

A partner has a symbolism/theme match to our 7th house if their chart resembles our 7th house astrologically. Look at the sign on the Dsc, the sign of the Dsc ruler, the house of the Dsc ruler, and planets in the 7th house. Does the partner match the themes of these? For example, a person might have Uranus in the 7th house and marry an Aquarius. This is a very basic example. We look at all of the 7th house for symbolic matches to our partners chart. If your 7th house ruler were in Leo it would increase the chance that you'd marry someone with the sign Leo strong in their chart. This is what I mean by a symbolism/theme match.

Oh, gotcha. That jives. Yes, I call that 'affinity'. I see how '7H Theme' certainly works, too.

So the 7H2 of a SAG rising would be ... 4H? I'm trying to determine how you're getting this. Sorry, I'm just not getting the calculation here. I'm trying!

For Sag rsiging it would be the 3rd house,s ince Gemini is on 7th cusp, and Gemini and 3rd house are associated with each other in the astrological alphabet

Wait. Got it. So, no calculation; it's just affinity-based. My 7H2 is 12H because of the Pisces DSC. So, my husband's is 11H, since his DSC is Aquarius; my partner's is 3H (Gemini DSC) and my Twin's -- 5H -- due to having a Leo DSC.

Yeah?

So my PSYCHE is in his 7H -- which is about it. Interestingly enough, he has a large asteroid stellium there, including VALENTINE, ANTEROS, and MELETE all conjunct 0°30. Very telling. That's what my PSYCHE is conjunct 1°.

MERC is his 7R, which is in his 8H. There are several aspects to his MERCURY:

• square my SUN (2°)
• square my PLUTO (0°)
• square my BML (0°)
• conjunct my CERES (0°)
• conjunct my NYMPHE (1°)
• trine my MOON (3°)
• trine my ANGEL (3°)
• trine my URANUS (2°)
• quincunx my NEPTUNE (1°)
• sextile my JUPITER (5°)

Honestly not sure what I'd count there. Maybe the MOON trine, or even CERES conjunction as it's exact. The PLUTO-BML square is, too, though.

His 7H2 is his 3H in Aquarius. Interestingly, I only have my SNODE there. (Well, and TARDIS, but, hey.)

My MARS is opposite his 7C, 3°, which is intriguing; it's my 8R. I'm not sure how I'd read that on his end, though.

A few other things of note:

• my NESSUS is 0° antiscia his 7C;
• my AMOR is 1° contrascia his 7C;
• my MOON is 1° antiscia his 3C;
• his MERC (7R) is 1° my MC;

Hello, Sabina and welcome to Lindaland!
As you can see, you came to the right place, many astrologers here share your views. Lotis White has an amazing theory regarding attraction houses and much more to which I subscribe, being validated by facts I discover every day in my analysis of charts. You'll find similarities with your own ideas.

Yes, I know it's a Cross with the angles, but he is mostly on the T/square side (in my view the most receptive part of a Cross is the one with angles/asteroids, while the part of the cross made of planets is the first to be taken into account when establishing what completes the configuration, the first option of completion). However, I don't get what you meant by this:

No doubt this configuration (and the planets involved) is difficult to stimulate, however;

because Mars and Moon are instinctive "planets", not at all difficult to stimulate, they are our "gut" reaction.

In order to post your charts, follow these steps:

do you use astro.com? if not, go there and to the "extended chart selection" where you can choose the chart you want to post and download it into your computer. you can modify the downloaded picture by removing names, birth data etc.

then go to Tinypic and upload the chart there. Copy here the link they give you in the section "link for forums" and there you are!

Here's part of an analysis I did on another thread. I used celebrity synastry examples on the bottom to illustrate how our 5th, 7th, and 8th house themes in the natal chart show in the partner's chart. Along with a 5th, 7th, 8th house oriented analysis, I included an analysis of people's secondary 7th house as well.

***

Here’s a list of the house cusps to look to as an extension of your DSC for each rising sign. These house cusps are symbolically linked to the sign on your DSC… showing what other traits you are attracted to in others, apart from just what the DSC alone shows.

Aries rising, Libra DSC… The 7th House has double importance.

Taurus rising, Scorpio DSC… Look to the 8th House.

Gemini rising, Sagittarius DSC… Look to the 9th House

Cancer rising, Capricorn DSC… Look to the 10th House

Leo rising, Aquarius DSC… Look to the 11th House

Virgo rising, Pisces DSC… Look to the 12th House

Libra rising, Aries DSC… Look to the 1st House

Scorpio rising, Taurus DSC… Look to the 2nd House

Sagittarius rising, Gemini DSC… Look to the 3rd House

Capricorn rising, Cancer DSC… Look to the 4th House

Aquarius rising, Leo DSC… Look to the 5th House

Pisces rising, Virgo DSC… Look to the 6th House

Can you see the pattern now?

Celebrity examples…

Ryan Reynolds has late Virgo rising, with a Pisces Dsc. His secondary 7th house is the 12th house. So he’s attracted to Pisces and 12th house energy in his love life. He married Blake Lively who has a stellium in early Virgo (Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, and possibly the Moon) all falling into Ryan’s 12th house… Blake’s Asc is unknown, so we can only guess as to why she was attracted to Ryan.

Angelina Jolie has her planets falling in Brad Pitt’s primary 5th 7th and 8th houses. Brad has Sagittarius rising with Gemini on the 7th house cusp, Aries on the 5th house cusp, and Cancer on the 8th house cusp. Angelina has Sun/Mercury in Gemini, Moon/Mars in Aries, and Venus in Cancer. From Angelina’s side, she has Capricorn on her Dsc. This matches Pitt’s Capricorn Moon/Venus energy, but not his Sagittarius Sun… Well, Angelina’s secondary Dsc is her 10th house cusp. She likes 10th house energy in her love life because of her Capricorn Dsc. Angelina has Jupiter in Aries conjunct her Mc… And Brad is a Sag Asc/Sun ruled by his Jupiter also in Aries…

Katie Holmes has Leo rising with Aqua on the DSC. She likes Aquarius and 11th house energy in her love life. Tom Cruise’s Sun falls in Cancer in her 11th house… Tom Cruise has Scorpio rising with a Taurus DSC. He likes Taurus and 2nd house energy in his love life. Katie’s Sun falls in Sagittarius in his 2nd house. (I know they’re divorced now, but since they were married in the 1st place I’m keeping the example)

Since Tom and Katie are now divorced, lets have a look at their exes, and how they fit into this pattern as well.

Before Tom, Katie was engaged to Chris Klein who had his Sun in Pisces in her 8th house, his Mars in Pisces in her 7th house, and his Venus in Aquarius in her 6th house but in the sign of her Dsc. Plus his Mercury in Aries trines her 5th house ruler Jupiter. He doesn’t hit her secondary Dsc (the 11th house) but since he has his planets in her primary 7th and 8th houses this isn’t necessary for attraction to occur.

Tom has previously been married to Nicole Kidman, and had a several year long relationship with Penelope Cruz.

With Nicole, her Sun in Gemini was in Tom’s primary 8th house, and her Moon in Sagittarius was in was in Tom’s 2nd house. His secondary 7th house due to his Taurus Dsc. So Nicole's Moon is in Tom's secondary 7th house.

Interestingly, from Nicole’s side she has the same Asc as Tom (Scorpio), giving her a Taurus Dsc. Her 2nd house is her secondary 7th house as well. In Nicole’s case, she has the Moon in her second house (the previously mentioned Sagittarius Moon) which adds an attraction to Cancer/Moon types to her profile. Naturally, this is part of why she fell for Tom (a Cancer Sun), and her current love Keith Urban (He has a Cancer Asc, and a Cancer Moon). Also Keith is a Scorpio Sun (Tom’s Asc) and Nicole’s Pisces 5th house cusp ruler Neptune is in Scorpio.

With Penelope, she very much influenced Tom’s primary 7th, and 5th houses. Her Sun in Taurus was smack in his 7th house, and her Pisces Venus and Jupiter were in his 5th house.

From Penelope’s side, she her chart shows an attraction to Tom both in a very obvious primary way, and in a secondary Dsc way. She has a Cancer rising, with a Capricorn Dsc, and her Dsc ruler Saturn is in Cancer (Tom’s Sun sign). Her 5th house cusp is Scorpio (Tom’s Asc). Penelope’s Capricorn Dsc means she likes Capricorn and 10th house energy in her love life. Her 10th house cusp is Aries, ruled by Mars in Cancer (Tom’s Sun sign again). And, Penelope’s Sun in early Taurus falls at the end of her 10th house, adding an attraction for Leo/Sun people to her profile. Both Tom and Javier Bardem (Penelope’s current husband) have Moon in Leo. Speaking of Javier, his Venus/Saturn conjunction in Aries falls into her 10th house (and thus her secondary 7th house). The combination of Venus and Saturn also symbolically matches her Capricorn Dsc. Javier is a Pisces Sun, and this resonates with Penelope’s Neptune in the 5th house, as well as her Pisces Venus.

...

I hope the above examples go on to show how people often choose partners based on the symbolism of their 5th, 7th, and 8th houses, along with the secondary 7th house.

EDIT (added more example material)

Actually, going back to the Ryan Reynolds example. Before Blake Lively, he was married to Scarlett Johansson. She matches his attraction pattern too, though in totally different ways. He has the Pisces Dsc ruled by Neptune in Sagittarius, and Scarlett has Sun, Asc, Mercury, and Uranus all in Sagittarius.

He has Capricorn on the 5th house cusp and she had Venus and Jupiter in Capricorn. Venus and Jupiter are actually in Ryan's 4th house but they still have a sign match to his 5th house cusp. Scarlett's Aquarius Mars does fall into his 5th house directly.

He has Aries on the 8th house cusp ruled by Mars in Scorpio. She has Moon in Scorpio.

It didn't work out long term, but his chart shows why he picked her in the first place. You can see how she matched his attraction pattern theme.

Interestingly in Blake's case, she doesn't put anything in his 5th house at all. But she does aspect his 5th house ruler with her Saturn. They have a Saturn/Saturn trine 1 degree apart. That might not sound very romantic to most, but considering Ryan has Capricorn on the 5th house to begin with it makes sense. He might actually really dig their Saturn/Saturn trine. Saturn would be oddly romantic for him because it rules his 5th house.

Blake doesn't overlay Ryan's 7th house either. However, her Saturn in Sagittarius is conjunct his 7th house ruler Neptune by 2 degrees, and as mentioned before she puts her Virgo stellium in his secondary 7th house... The 12th house because of his Pisces Dsc.

Blake does put her Jupiter directly into Ryan's 8th house. This is the only obvious 5th, 7th, 8th house overlay that they have. The rest is shown by house ruler aspects, and then the secondary 7th house overlay. Again, we can see why he picked her. However she did activate different parts of his attraction pattern then Scarlett Johansson.

Of course, I was looking mostly at symbolism/theme/affinity matches in these examples without hardly even touching on the interplanetary synastry part, which adds a whole other dimension to the whole story.

Oh, and about the house ruled by the sign of Venus for Men and Mars for women (They work like a secondary Venus or Mars in attraction)... In Ryan's case he has Venus in Sagittarius. Taurus is on the 9th house cusp, again ruled by Venus in Sag, and Jupiter in Taurus is also in the 9th house. Scarlett obviously matches this with her Sagittarius planets.

Blake's chart matches this in a more subtle way. She has both Sun and Venus exactly conjunct in the earth sign Virgo. Sun and Venus conjunct in an earth sign could definitely give off a Taurus-like vibe matching Ryan's Taurus on the 9th house cusp as his secondary Venus. Also, going back to their Saturn/Saturn trine. Her Saturn is in Sagittarius trine his Leo Saturn, so he can really feel this side of her. Her Sagittarius Saturn is also conjunct his 7th house ruler.
