Stephen, this topic is multi-faceted and I believe we're speaking from two different levels. We can approach this from a cultural, pyschological, spiritual perspective, etc. My stance changes as the levels change. Maybe that's why I feel like you've not understood me. I do think you understood the tongue in cheek nature of my thigh comment though, didn't you?

Yes, good thighs exist. I've seen them. No, not every celebrity has one. Yes, seeing some famous woman mocked for weight gain or crow's feet or imperfect thighs isn't the ultimate answer. The old game of building these men and woman up, then tearing them down is an odd balancing act to observe - like watching someone in the throws of manic-depression. It's also sort of similiar to your pot use. It's capable of tackling the symptoms in an immediate sense, but doesn't do much to address the deeper issue and certainly doesn't solve the problem in the long term. Our culture overindulges in that all powerful conduit, the mass media. All forms of it. So, again, whatever pops that balloon - even for a moment - isn't something I'm going to get particularly hung up on.

Does the bread and circus banality Hollywood parades through our streets everyday sadden you? The lies of Madison Ave? The pyschological manipulation? The orchestrated distraction from anything truly meaningful or urgent or 'real'? None of this irks you in the least? I'd be surprised if it didn't.

Having said all that ... I'm probably the vainest person I know and I admit to an inexplicable fondness for Gwyneth Paltrow and Monica Bellucci. Go figure. I'm human too.

The roots of hijab are very much misundertood by most westerners. But again, we have the cultural implications, the spiritual, the religious blah blah. So, if you asked me my feeling on wearing a veil they would be positive or negative depending on the playing field. Interesting that the dress purports to hid the beauty and vanity of the woman in the picture and yet notice the amount of eye make-up.

quote:
Where is the just division between the desert and the sown?
Please, help me to understand your paradoxical wisdom.
These questions remain obscure to me.

This is sarcasm, yes?

Tink, nice post. Good thoughts on hijab.

Trust me, HSC, it's not 'men doing it to women' only. I've lived there, I've seen it with my own eyes. I also have distant relatives who adopted the head scarf (the full-on hijab is not common in Egypt). I could go on for days on this subject. I hate the scarf. I think it's lame. I disagree for all it 'represents', not because it's repressive so much as posturing for religious purpose.
Most of the time it's the women who choose on their own (with pressure from other covered females) to adopt the veil.

And yes, like Tink says, there definitely is a mystique. These women can work it and level a man with their eyes alone.

TINK,

quote:
My stance changes as the levels change.

Hmmm.

quote:
I do think you understood the tongue in cheek nature of my thigh comment though, didn't you?

No, I didn't. Did anyone?

What exactly is your position, lol?

quote:
seeing some famous woman mocked for weight gain or crow's feet or imperfect thighs isn't the ultimate answer... sort of similiar to your pot use... whatever pops that balloon - even for a moment - isn't something I'm going to get particularly hung up on.

So, you are defending my pot use, now?

And will you rush to defend it, next time I'm attacked?

Which level are we on, by the way, lol?

quote:
Does the bread and circus banality Hollywood parades through our streets everyday sadden you? The lies of Madison Ave? The pyschological manipulation? The orchestrated distraction from anything truly meaningful or urgent or 'real'? None of this irks you in the least? I'd be surprised if it didn't.

Of course it does.

That is part of the point I'm trying to make here.

This thread, to me, is a choice example of that distraction.

quote:
the hijab, the veil, the scarf and the ways in which westerners see and judge these things is one of my favorite topics its not a simple matter

No, it isn't.

But perhaps we can agree that,
when it is compulsory, its wrong.

Individuals, not societies, should make those choices.

quote:
This is sarcasm, yes?

Indeed, it is.

Very clear and unambiguous sarcasm.

I still don't think you've confronted my objections.

You appear to be no less confused than myself,
though perhaps a bit more skilled at concealing the fact;
at least, from yourself, and a number of people here.

ps. Monica Bellucci is HOT!

No, I'm not confused. Maybe I'm not explaining myself well.

I've defended you many times, HSC. If I think you're right, I'll say so. Did we ever discuss your pot use? I took issue with your assertion that pyschedelics were a valid means of spiritual awakening. I still do.

ah, so it was sarcasm! HSC, if the shoe were on the other foot in this thread (and other recent ones), what would your reaction be? Would you plead a sensitive, compassionate soul? Would you beg for a gentle touch? Would you call me a cold insensitive biitch? Would you wonder why I was provoking and prodding and attacking you? Would you accuse me of tearing apart your posts?

I notice a discrepency between the way you treat others and the way you wish to be treated. Its funny how this works, isn't it?

If this is just you being you, then by all means continue. I don't suppose you'll be able to stop yourself. We empty before we fill. But if this is strategy, if this is a conscious effort to rile me up or hurt me in some way, please reconsider wasting your time.

Yes, she is. She's not perfect. But she is hot.

Um.. YES. You continue to bring it up,
and to make jokes at my expense about it.

You can take objection to whatever you want,
but can you ignore the evidence of Ram Dass' development?

I'm not entirely sure.

My tone with you is particularly blunt and sharp, at times,
but, then, you keep calling me a manic-depressive
(because I recognize, alternately, great and deplorable traits in myself?
Or because I have highs and lows like any deeply emotional person?
Or because I have a profound longing to be with a true partner?
Or because I feel drawn to explore other dimensions than this one?),
and your claims are just as self-assured and insistent as mine are,
despite your having no clearly expressed arguments to support them.

Yes, it is.
And it goes both ways.
Funny how this works, isn't it?

When half a dozen people gang up,
with snide remarks and pats on the back,
all just for the sake of getting my goat,
yes, I tend to respond defensively.

I'm not about hurting you.

I want to make my points clearly,
and thats hard to do without biting irony.

Most of all, I want you to bring your "A" game.

Sometimes people need to get riled up to put any effort into a discussion.

I'm sure we can both think of a few people like that.

Also,
you have yet to show reasons

Clearly, Zala was not reassured

You have polluted this light hearted post with your dribble. You have nothing to contribute you pretentious jerk. You know you are wrong, so you continued to ramble on here to cover up the fact you are. You know it, and I know it. You think by posting a billion posts, it will cover up the fact youre an a--hole. First of all, the word is "drivel". (Ghani, take note.)

And can anyone see what is being said to me here?

I craft logical arguments, and this is what I'm met with.

Every one of you is exhibiting self-assurance,
and trading all sorts of unflattering insinuations.

Is my tone more or less offensive than this? Be objective.

Have I called anyone a pretentious a$$hole, a LIAR, or a jerk,
despite the fact that I may feel I have at least as much reason to?

What is so different, but that I accompany my claims with logic,
and have not sunk to the level of baldfaced insults like this?

It seems, the more rational I am, the more I'm met with these tantrums.

Be objective. Try. Thank you.

And, if anyone is still confused...

From my point of view, I'm not "polluting a light-hearted thread",
but bringing insight, empathy, and compassion to an inconsiderate, mean-spirited thread.

Yes, hostilities can errupt when these things are dug up and confronted.

But, in the end, I think we may all come out of this alright.

Stephen, it’s the same everywhere you go, isn’t it??
quote:
It seems, the more rational I am, the more I'm met with these tantrums.
Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose…..
The following is from a notorious thread from almost two years ago, where “half a dozen people ganged up” on you with snide remarks (and tantrums) in response to your pure and elevated rationality:
quote:
(HSC speaking to) ILWL,
__________________________________
quote:
The point is HSC,
YOU can choose to have kids any day,
without having to go through childbirth.
__________________________________

So can you. It's called adoption,
and its the only intelligent and compassionate choice to make.
I'm just stating my point of view.
There's no need to tell me how unpopular it is,
I'm fully aware of that.
I said it is the only intelligent and compassionate choice, and this is absolutely true for the vast majority of us. There may be circumstances in which it is better to have a child of one's own rather than adopt, but they are exceedingly rare.
There are definite answers to questions.
Some things are just true.
This is one of them.
So what if I call myself a prophet? What is that to you, anyway? And what is a prophet if not someone who has a message to share which is true, deeply important, and highly unpopular?
What have I done wrong?
I stated my beliefs with conviction.
I believe I am right and you are wrong.
Where is the arrogance there?

I disagree about THE Truth of that matter, and posit that this is merely **your** OPINION, derived from **your** logic.
Those choice bits above are from….. http://www.linda-goodman.com/ubb/Forum7/HTML/008307.html
….. and are just one instance of *many* on this message board refuting your claim on page 6 of this epic:
quote:
Good points, you two.
I don't believe we've been properly introduced.
You should both read some of my posts sometime.
I'm constantly talking about how truth is relative,
and how every situation is utterly unique,
and cannot be reduced to an absolute.

This is a HUGE part of what I do.
I'm so glad we're all back on the same page.
I don’t see that we are…..
And did write and Ghani and I deserve the crack about “reading some of your posts sometime”??
We three have been here at LL a long time and I daresay have read many thousands of your posts.
There was a time when I was one of your biggest fans. There are still times when you put words together in a marvelous and stimulating and thought-provoking way, and I still tell you when your writing moves me. But we’ve been here before, you and I – this discussion about “Truth” – and I feel it’s a poor use of my time to revisit a place where I’ve agreed to disagree with someone.

PS: If you are going to superciliously do spelling/grammar corrections for other posters (“drivel”) then please allow me to point out that one should use the word “cite” when you mean quote or refer to, and not “site”…..

or whichever you prefer

Note: Snohawk was out of line. Insults and name-calling are not tolerated for long here. He got a freebie, here's hoping it don't happen again.....

And the judge and jury has spoken... out of both sides of his mouth

Come on HSC, this is not a thread that should induce drama.

Do you really think these celebs care what LL thinks?? Or that you are defending them ?They get paid either way and that`s most likely their main interest.
T made her point clear from the opening thread.

Hmmm, seems she saw this goofy thread unfolding!

I have some older threads out there; go looking and have at picking them apart!

Of course I know where writesomething is coming from, I just don't want to rush putting you down without absolute justification, because then you'd use that opportunity to do this.

What you're saying is not backed by logic at all, either, HSC. You're writing some stupid stuff which does not add up in your favour. What's really pathetic is that you corrected his (I'm pretty sure I've read you're a guy, right? that could have been Got Gemini?, though. And if you aren't that would explain once calling me cute) spelling.

Perhaps you fantasize that you experience pain in a more amplified manner than others, and that justifies what you do, but suck it up, just p*ss off.

I can't say p*ss? that's honestly what I put.

The irony and hypocrisy in here is out of this world. Wow.

I love that you had to go back two years to find that, Zala.
Priceless. Do you keep files on me, lol?

I also love that nobody can stay on topic and discuss this.

It's all about sidetracking the discussion now into personal attacks. Love it.

Zala, you should read that entire thread over again. Talk about a riot.

I'm not the only one who sees things this way, you know.

Ask 26Taurus if it is more intelligent
(or more informed), and more compassionate
to have a child, or adopt.

Maybe she'll tell you what she really thinks.

If there was any justice, snowhawk and writesomething would be banned
(so many people have been banned for less, its a joke),
and ghani would be stripped of her moderatorship.
Personal attacks is what you are making here. Baldfaced namecalling.

And why? Because you disagree with my point of view,
and because it frustrates you that you can't keep up with me.

Truth hurts, lol.

Well, if it gets through.

snowhawk,
You do realize that just saying,
"what you're saying is not backed by logic"
is not an argument, but a claim.
Can you see the difference?

juni, these celebs do care.
You have no idea how much it hurts
to be trash-talked all over the world.
I can't believe you have no empathy.
Amazing that you think its all dollar signs.
Is that what it would be for you?

Zala,
Yes, as a matter of fact,
this happens to me wherever
I go and speak my truth.

Just so you know...

You're all racists.

(There, now I'm a namecaller, too.)

Well, not exactly "racists", per say.

What do you call it when people are prejudiced against celebrities?

And what have they ever done to you, but try to entertain and inspire you?

I'm going to go throw up now. You guys need more help than I do, lol.

Your humor is sick! Your souls are sick.
