Good point, T! If women aren't given a platform and respect, children's issues, in turn, don't get enough attention. Because while men may love kids, by and large women are more the nurturers (with exceptions, I understand.) I'm on another forum (political) where most of the members are men. I have an androgynous screen name. One night, really late at night, another androgynous poster started chatting up the site owner, and revealed that she is a woman. He, being a good hearted Taurus (you know what I mean, right? ) started asking her a bunch of questions about why she never revealed she is a woman there before, and what her experience is like, as a woman amongst so many men. Her answers were so on point, I could have written it myself. She said: 1) You know the site is full of men when you post something about convicted gang rapers only getting sentenced to a year in prison, and nobody bumps the thread or replies. (I wasn't there or would have.) She actually posted the same article twice and it never got a reply. 2) You know the site is full of men because if you say something good they call you "dude" or "brother" and if you say something they don't like they call you "a mom" or some other effeminite term. (ROTFL because on a few occasions someone called me a mom, meaning it as an insult, and I couldn't say, "YES. YOU GOT A PROBLEM WITH THAT?" But if they call me "brother," well, that's the highest compliment. ) 3) She observed that, in general, the few women there with women's screen names don't seem to get as much respect as the men. She chose an androgynous screen name to dodge around the superfluous gender commentary the other women have to contend with. Anyway...just goes to show that there is a real gender divide. And everyone should realize that and make room for others to be able to have their say, right? IP: Logged |

That reminds me of an experiment where I chose a masculine name and pretended to be a man on a board with a lot of political debate that had given me a hard time. It made a very noticeable difference, I got A LOT more respect. I was tempted to keep pretending to be a man everywhere on the net (as I figured it would also prevent some harassment and insulting questions I got hit with at times as well as the increased respect), but you know how much I love sharing my personal view, life experience, etc, which would make it nearly impossible so I dismissed it as I didn't want to have to watch everything I said for fear of outing myself. ^ I really think everyone should try that experiment, they'll see there is an unmistakeable difference with how they get treated.I also wonder if the guys who have called me "a mom" are just more intuitive than they realize. My answer the first time it happened was, "Oh, are mothers not allowed here?" which prompted the dude to look at his gender bias, and he backpedaled really fast, not knowing if I'm a mother or not. I also got called a mom when I cared "too much" about a vaccine issue. When I first signed up on that forum I had a woman's screen name but quickly learned to hate it. The men don't mean any harm being flirtatious, but it's a distraction. If I say something thoughtful, I would like a serious reply, not, "Hey a GIRL can think this way? Are you single?" Nor do I want them treating me with kid gloves and saying "Good point" if it's not really a good point! LOL..no pity gestures please. And they don't do that now that I have a cryptic name. Like you, PJ, I get more out of conversations where I can be myself. Since this site is predominantly female I feel more comfortable here. And can imagine how men like aquaguy might struggle IP: Logged |

I truly don't wish to belabor anything here, but I feel a few things should perhaps be addressed. quote: You're the one who defended aquaguy's 30+ posts or so at once, before doing any kind of "background check" on him. You didn't even know what you were talking about.
This is the kind of thing I'm talking about from you. First, you projected a Mercury-Neptune echo chamber, and now you're claiming that I don't know what I'm talking about while referencing the only counterpoint available that could make any sense of the responses Aquaguy got. In bringing up his past, a concession was made that my basic point was accurate: his posts here didn't deserve the kind of responses that were given. Hard to say that I didn't know what I was talking about, when everyone else has already conceded the point. Or do you think that bringing up past Aquaguy threads does justify materially ignoring what he said here? My posts were only pointing out what any other outsider would have seen. Should threads make some logical sense, and follow some logical flow, or is it superior for a thread to showcase responses that don't match the posts they are addressing? Do you understand how difficult it would be for anyone to try to make the case that I have been unfair here? And yet, you've persisted. Wouldn't it be easier just to have some humility every now and again? quote: No, to prove you can. So you don't just get to allege I constructed something poorly without back up.
How has that worked out for me in the past? quote: Point is d is less profane than c, since you can say the D word in a harmless context in public, but never the c word.
There is no inherent profanity in either. The profanity is assigned by the audience. People don't call non-Richards 'd's with any sort of notion that it's ok because there have been Richards called by that name. All of the genitalia words are allusions to the genitalia. A 'd' is a 'd' because he's selfishly screwing you in some way. A 'pu' is a 'pu' because the person is taking abuse. A 'c' is a 'c' typically because he or she is disallowing some generally inappropriate thing from occurring. It's all quite vulgar, and not softened by the Richards of the world. IP: Logged |

well he lost me at "i know ALL ABOUT FEMINISTS" after proving that he knows only a smidgeon about feminists...of which there are umpteen varieties.as long as people continue to refer to "WOMEN" and "MEN" as if they are monochrome groups they will never be able to relate to the individual members of those groups. the fact is that aquaguy totally ignored each and every post that pointed out that feminism is ideally about EQUALITY FOR BOTH SEXES and continued slashing feminists as if they were all, basically, penis enviers. sorry, i'm sure he is a nice guy, but i have little problem understanding why he has trouble meeting and striking up a rapport with the ladies. yes, a lot of the reactions here were over the top, but since he SAYS he would like to meet women and have a relationship my advice is to stop with the stereotyping, already! and he might take notes on the reaction his stance evokes ... not conducive to dating. like men, we come in infinite flavours.

I agree with you. And I hope Aquaguy can keep his mind open enough to let good people in regardless of gender. I've read a little more from him now. I'm still struck by the state that he lives in. The most depressing time of my life was spent in that state, so I hope he gets out! It's not totally culturally bankrupt or anything (I enjoy Dave Ramsey, and some of my family still live there), but I do think a different environment would produce different experiences for him, which might alleviate all this concern over gender issues. He's got loads of life left to learn a lot about people. Concession was made by whom? You think "everyone else conceded the point"? Really? Did a lot of posts vanish while I wasn't looking?

I don't know which states you've been to, but I do assure you that you need not be so cynical about women everywhere. You can drive three hours in any direction, and notice some cultural shift. I'm sure that if you've traveled, you probably have seen that the culture changes. Some of those cultural changes would shift your perspective on women. If you look on Health.com's Most Depressing States, you'll find Tennessee and Kentucky both made the list. Surely, it's not the best place you could be. Faith, how many are continuing with rants against Aquaguy that don't really address his point(s)? IP: Logged |

That's tricky. How many are continuing...? Looks like almost everyone has vacated. Ghost town thread here. How many are continuing with rants..? None. How many are continuing with rants that don't address his points...? Of the zero members besides me who are currently posting, zero of them are ranting, and of those non-existent rants, zero address his points, and zero don't address them. So... According to what's not happening (rants) we deduct what is happening (victory to the AG tag team)? First one to shut up loses? IP: Logged |

To generalize, aquag, since you seem to feel comfortable with that, if you want to meet compatible women stop looking for them...you're young, but being yourself, following your own inyerests, will lead you to female PEOPLE with whom you may have something in common. But age is no guarantee. I understand the urge to "connect" but if that is your goal it tends to ruin the tone of your approach. You seem to be as wary of women as youfeel they are of you...natural reaction going down! The tangent on Tennessean women got me to thinking about a neighbor I once had from Tennessee. Normally Texans & Tennesseans don't get along (for multiple stupid reasons, ranging from contesting Davy Crockett as "belonging" to their state to the Nashville vs. Texas country), but in California when the locals see us both as Southerners then it kinda brought us together (though even then we did have our conflicts, but we also had our share of laughs as well as commiserating about how Californians reacted to our accents, too). And that reminds me of the very first ep (after barely paying attention to it for a long time while babysitting) that got me interested in Hannah Montana (with alter ego Miley Stewart, based heavily on the real life Miley Cyrus, both real & fictional Miley from Tennessee transplanted to California) and how I related to her getting made fun of by snooty Californians because of her accent (I so felt that) and cheering her on as she finally got them back: http://youtu.be/JKoobk32IlQ?t=10m18s And interesting enough she also gets crazy with her fashions at time, but unlike other celebrities who get as absurd (even more) she gets called "trailer trash with money" for it.
