I did some Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) training this morning. During the test I was presented with this scenario:You are introduced to a new member of your group, and when you extend your hand in greeting you're met with a prosthetic arm. What do you do? My initial thought from the choices was to go ahead and shake the prosthetic, but then I wondered if that was rude that I wasn't making actual physical contact, so I switched my answer to switching hands, so they could shake my hand with their good hand. I was wrong. There was another question where I had to choose the scenario where a person used the most proper ettiquette in dealing with a person with a disability. I thought the woman who tested a mobility scooter she saw in her doctor's office was the most respectful as it didn't even involve her disabled grandmother. I was wrong, because she didn't get permission to check out the scooter from the owner. I didn't even know there was an owner from what the scenario said. I thought that because it was in the doctor's office it was for his patient's use. Whoops. IP: Logged |

Our equivalent is DDA (disability discrimination act) training. We have to do it once a year. I can see the point in terms of raising awareness and making people think, but I do think it is way too prescriptive in what you should and shouldn't do. It makes people worried about even interacting with a disabled person, for fear of doing the wrong thing.....that has surely got to be worse than making an innocent faux pas?I always think 'if that were me....' and then I get the question wrong, and then I get a bit cross because it should be about the individual and what is important to them? Setting 'rules' around behaviour surely segregates and dehumanizes the very people that the DDA act seeks to protect? Anyway, how you doing AG?

Exactly! That's what I think, too.I'm pretty good. Our lovely weather is getting cooler again. I'm in my Shape-Ups today. Still indecisive about what car or scooter to get (will probably be a car; I can do a scooter next year or something). I'm kind of drawn to wagons, and even minivans and SUVs sometimes. Not the most practical of thoughts, but I like the idea of being able to move stuff (partly because I hope to get rid of some of my bedroom furniture). EDIT: It's also another good hair day. I wasn't quite sure about this haircut when I got it, but it really looks good from the front. I've had a string of good hair days. I'm offsetting it today with a nice amount of stubble. I've given up on the car thoughts, after paying out £500 on a service for my existing car this week. The following day I forked out £200 for the dentist......it's been an expensive month so far!I am sure that whatever you decide on it will be just right. What kind of temperatures can we expect late May/early June?

I'll have to look into that Juni. That is an expensive month, Esk! I hate cars and teeth. I mean, they're alright when they work, and especially when they work and are attractive, but otherwise they suck. Temperature prediction for San Francisco? Your guess is as good as mine. That place has strange weather. What was that quote supposedly by Mark Twain? "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco..." It's freakish. It doesn't strike me as surprising like when I lived in Tennessee where I'd see different weather patterns during the same day, but it's tough to predict how it might be. Edit: Oh wow! "Suck" doesn't catch a censor anymore. IP: Logged |

That's a nice little truck, Juni. I like it! It's kind of a perfect size. Not excessively bulky for one person to be driving in, but large enough to carry people or supplies places.IP: Logged |

A picture from Memphis two Christmases ago: I know it's kind of random, but someone tagged my brother in it on Facebook today, so I was looking at it, and it looks good. That's my dad on the bottom left. Then the older of my younger sisters, Bethany (Aries). Then Jessea, who is my brother's fiancee. Then my brother, Danny (Leo) the extremely tall baby of the family. Then, on the right, my youngest sister, Jenni (Aquarius), and me. IP: Logged |

He just came out disfigured in his enormity. He was a huge baby. He's 6'4". I'm 6'. My dad is 5'10". He does have our small teeth, though, and the right hair color.IP: Logged |

Well, no new car or scooter purchase was made over the weekend. Instead I saw two Oscar-nominated movies. I saw The King's Speech and The Fighter. I preferred The King's Speech, but between the two (and even if you throw in The Social Network) Christian Bale had the biggest transformation for a role. Totally believable, and very good. The King's Speech is just great because you really want to cheer on the lead characters. It's written so well, you really empathize with them. IP: Logged |
