You're a classic AG! quote: "He was nice and more humble than required."Madness had such a cult following didn't they!? I was never into them but could see the attraction. The females that followed that type of genre were too detached for me - I couldn't understand their body language and they were way too fashionable - I couldn't keep up. The males seemed to understand something that I couldn't, as well - still don't know - do you have any ideas, AG? Or am I looking too deeply? Maybe they just liked to dress well on modest means and liked the idea of cool and understated individuality with a hint of sardonic humour, teehee. IP: Logged |

they were as the saying goes, "HUGE"! and despite the quirky, humourous superficiality AG mentions, they were fantastic musicians to a man. woody, their drummer is one of my all time favourites.ska in england was picked up bigtime by the skinheads, a not very pretty group with a very "sharp" fashion sense probably to balance a very messy, underclass life. bovver boots (yeuch!) and braces(suspenders), sta-prest chinos - a pretty proscribed look, with the shaved heads (boys and girls) and a definite group leaning toward the National Front, though not all of them... madness adopted that style in reaction to the punk goth stuff, and took it a step further into burlesque/slapstick. i think they regretted the "nutty" label to a degree, because people saw them as superficial. most of them were never "skins" and certainly not national front followers, the chirpy thing does get a bit old, but in small doses they did some brilliant music that stands up really well...and they're apparently doing well again currently. sorry got a bit carried away ther! I'm on cell phone now, so I have a diminished capacity for writing long responses. I don't mind a segue into Madness. I agree that they are great musicians, and what they brought to the table was always more exciting than other ska music of the time. Part of the reason I got into Blur was due to their Madness send-ups. Though I lost a couple of the discs I still have my Madness box set. I think I still have a t-shirt and button, too. When I get internet at the new place I'll have to take some pictures.IP: Logged |

Chryseis, the not relating to detachment comment sounds a bit like earth speaking about air. I don't think I could ever fully hang out with a ska crowd either. I was more of a New Wave-r. My first ever favorite band was Depeche Mode.IP: Logged |

Do you like The Presets, AG? They are a bit Depeche Mode-like but a bit heavier, I think. The singer is old enough to have been in that era.IP: Logged |

I just had a look on youtube - 'Elbow', very positive, well crafted, class vocals. Though I like the music it wouldn't be something I would choose. I'm not very knowledgeable on what I like though and am inconsistent with who I do think I like.Something that has totally confused me in the last several years is that time and again I like a selection of groups/artists that I never ever thought I would go for. Can you believe it, John Mayer, Maroon 5, Jamiroquai - *shakes head* I don't know what it is. My time honoured favourites are R&B - not just anything but stuff with soul and deep emotion. Though quite crazily, and in step with the previous list I like OutKast, French music and some woman singing "I wanna sing a song for you tonight - Ya beautiful" and I always forget who she is and what it is called. Of course I also have a huge range of likes such as Pearl Jam, Creedence, Dire Straits, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, ....all the classic super bands. And I also like Soulja boy and that type of music. I must confess though, I can't listen to a lot of music - I find it too emotionally confronting and don't operate very well unless its certain types. So my forays into the music world a sporadic - it's too disruptive and I get off track, lost and am likely to run away and join the circus or something - repression I think it's called, lol Sorry about the journal writing and self-reflection on your thread! Hope you don't mind. IP: Logged |

Yes, I agree that Elbow is good all around. Talk about emotion...their Pisces singer expresses things quite beautifully at times. I can see why you say "positive," but it's not quite all positive. I'm not sure I'd like it as much if it were all positive. It has depth, though, which is nice.It is kind of strange that you like deep emotion, but then find it confrontational and have to withdraw from it. I have a single water planet, and I kind of live vicariously through the emotional music. That's part of the draw. I enjoy your writing, so please feel free. IP: Logged |

When I tried listening to the Specials, it didn't really do anything for me. I can't remember specifics, but I have the impression that they're boring by comparison.IP: Logged |

I thought I'd have to put another call in to Linksys this morning in order to get my connection sorted, but to my surprise my computer connected all by itself. It's good. It works! Now I can finally share the song I've been working on: Protect The Ones You Love There's plenty I could critique about it, but I'm extremely pleased with myself for throwing this together in four days.
